Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Inlet of Indian Ocean
Answer: Red Sea
The Red Sea is a long, narrow body of water forming the extreme northwestern portion of the Indian Ocean, of which it is described as an inlet. Lying between Africa and Asia, it borders six countries, including Egypt in the former and Saudi Arabia in the latter.
2. Inlet of Barents Sea
Answer: White Sea
The White Sea is the southernmost inlet of the Barents Sea, which is itself a marginal sea of the Arctic Ocean. The entirety of the White Sea is bordered by Russia, and it is considered to be part of the internal waterways of that country.
3. Marginal Mediterranean sea
Answer: Black Sea
The Black Sea, and its smaller neighbour the Sea of Azov, could be considered the easternmost reaches of the Atlantic Ocean, being connected by the Bosporus, Sea of Marmara and Dardanelles to the Aegean Sea. From there the connection to the Mediterranean leads directly to the Atlantic. Countries bordering the Black Sea include Russia, Ukraine, Bulgaria and Turkey (amongst others), while rivers flowing into this body of water include the Danube and the Don.
4. Marginal sea of Pacific Ocean
Answer: Yellow Sea
The Yellow Sea is nestled between China and the Korean Peninsula, with the East China Sea to its south. Northern extensions of the Yellow Sea are the Bohai Sea and Korea Bay. Several major rivers, including the Yalu (into Korea Bay), the Yellow and the Hai empty into this body of water, carrying with them the silt that gives the sea its colour and its name.
5. Sinai Peninsula
Answer: Red Sea
Egypt's Sinai Peninsula lies at the northern end of the Red Sea, flanked by the Gulf of Aqaba and Gulf of Suez, which are arms of that body of water. Unlike the rest of Egypt, this peninsula lies in Asia. Its position on the border with Israel has led to its having been a disputed region at various times since 1948.
6. Kola Peninsula
Answer: White Sea
The Kola Peninsula, in northwestern Russia, is a large peninsula situated on the northern edge of the White Sea. Located within the Arctic Circle, this peninsula has forests, or taiga, in its southern portion, and more barren tundra in the north. Parts of the peninsula are in Finland and Norway.
7. Crimean Peninsula
Answer: Black Sea
The Crimean Peninsula extends southward into the Black Sea from its northern shore, with the Sea of Azov forming part of its shoreline. The area has a turbulent history, including the Crimean War of the mid-nineteenth century, which pitted Russia against Britain, France and others. In the 21st century it has been an area of dispute between Russia and Ukraine.
8. Jeju Island
Answer: Yellow Sea
As it seemed likely that using the Korean Peninsula (to create symmetry with the landforms used for the other seas) would be something of a giveaway, our example for the Yellow Sea is Jeju Island. This island is South Korea's largest, and sits off the southwest tip of the Korean Peninsula in the Korea Strait, which connects the Yellow Sea to the East China Sea and the Sea of Japan. Jeju is a volcanic island, and tourists are attracted to features such as the numerous small extinct volcanoes known as oreum.
9. Jeddah
Answer: Red Sea
Jeddah, Saudi Arabia is a city and port on the eastern shore of the Red Sea. Its port is described as the "second busiest" in the Arab world (after Dubai). As well as being known as the Gateway to Mecca, proximity to the Red Sea has allowed Jeddah to aspire to becoming a tourist destination in the region.
10. Arkhangelsk
Answer: White Sea
Arkhangelsk (Archangel) is located near the mouth of the Northern Dvina River, at the point where it enters the White Sea. A seaport for hundreds of years, the city is perhaps best known outside Russia as one of the two major destinations (the other being Murmansk) of the Arctic convoys during the Second World War.
11. Varna
Answer: Black Sea
Varna is a seaside resort on the western shore of the Black Sea and one of the largest cities in Bulgaria. Besides being a tourist destination, Varna is the headquarters of the Bulgarian navy, and a transportation hub in the region. During the Crimean War it was used as naval base by British and French forces, and suffered an outbreak of cholera amongst the foreign military personnel stationed there.
12. Qingdao
Answer: Yellow Sea
Qingdao, formerly known as Tsingtao or Tsingtau, in China's Shandong province, is a major city on the shores of the Yellow Sea. It has at various times in its history been occupied by German forces and Japanese forces. Its location on the sea coast has meant that it is a port and naval base, but it is also known for Tsingtao beer, produced in the city's Tsingtao Brewery. Attractive to tourists, it is also home to several universities and other educational facilities.
