Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

The Aegean Sea (known in antiquity as Greek Sea) lies on the eastern coast of Greece, separating Southeastern Europe from Western Asia. It is a part of the Mediterranean. Dotted with many islands, it is also the home of the earliest European civilizations, including the Cyclades civilization of the Neolithic and the Minoan civilization of the Bronze Age. It has also been a major tourist destination, especially in the summer months.

The Ionian Sea lies on the western coast of Greece, south of the Adriatic. A part of the Mediterranean, as well, it separates Greece from the southern parts of Italy (known in antiquity as Magna Graecia). The deepest point of the Mediterranean can be found there, its name being Calypso Deep, in honour of the legendary sea nymph Calypso, whose home, Ogygia, was said to be there.

The Ligurian Sea is to be found between the Italian area of Liguria and the island of Corsica, belonging to France, and is a part of the Mediterranean. Its name derives from the pre-Roman Ligures. The city of Genoa, in the Middle Ages a leading maritime republic and birthplace of Christopher Columbus, is to be found on its shores.

The Tyrrheanian Sea is located on Italy's western coast, separating mainland Italy from Sicily and Sardinia. It is named after the Tyrrhenians, which was how the ancient Greeks referred to the Etruscans, the pre-Roman inhabitants of Tuscany. The Tyrrhenian Sea is also the place where four winds intersect, namely the mistral from the area of the Rhone river, the libeccio from the southwest, the sirocco and ostro directly from the south, giving rise to the ancient myth of the island of Aeolus (god of the winds) being located there.

The Adriatic Sea, a part of the Mediterranean, separates the Italian peninsula from the Balkan peninsula. The Romans occasionally called it Mare Superum, meaning "the upper sea", thus indicating a distinction from the Ionian Sea, immediately south of the Adriatic. The boundary between them is often said to be the Strait of Otranto.

The Balearic Sea is a part of the Mediterranean located on the eastern coast of Spain. It separates mainland Spain from the Balearic Islands. One of the smallest European seas, it is also where the river Ebro meets the sea. The river Ebro is famous for being designated as the frontier between Roman and Carthaginian spheres of influence in the Iberian peninsula in classical antiquity.

The Baltic Sea is located in Northern Europe. Some of the countries bordering it are the three Baltic countries (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania) and the Scandinavian countries. The name "Baltic" derives from the Lithuanian word "baltas", meaning "white", while the Roman historian Tacitus called it Mare Suebicum (from the name of the Suebi, a Germanic tribe).

The North Sea is located between the British Isles on the one hand, and continental Europe on the other (including the Scandinavian peninsula). It has been historically known by many names, like "Frisian Sea" or "German Sea". One of those names, given by the Cimbri tribe in modern-day Denmark, is Morimarusa, meaning "sea of the dead", apparently believing it contained a link to the underworld, a belief also ascribed by the Byzantine historian Procopius to the Frisians, ancestors of the Dutch.

The Black Sea is a frontier sea between Europe and Asia. First known as "Euxeinos Pontos" ("Hospitable Sea" in Greek), it acquired its modern name in the late Middle Ages. Many European rivers flow into it, like the Danube, the Dnipro and the Dniester. One of its islands, Zmiinyy ("snake island" in Ukrainian) is said to be the ancient Leuke or Ophioussa ("white" or "snake island" in Greek), which is where the legendary demigod Achilles is said to have been buried.

The Sea of Azov is separated from the Black Sea via the Strait of Kerch. Its most ancient name is Maeotis, attested in Greek sources. Strabo believed the Maeotis and the Tanais (Don or Siverskyi Donets) river to be the border between Europe and Asia. One of the most populous and well-known cities on its coast is the Ukrainian city of Mariupol.

The Red Sea is located between Africa and Asia. The Caribbean Sea is to be found in North America. The Timor Sea and the Celebes Sea lie in the Pacific Ocean between the islands of Indonesia, whereas the Bismarck Sea is adjacent to Papua New Guinea.
