1. What was Operation Lam Son 719/Dewey Canyon Two (II)?

Answer: Invasion of Laos by South Vietnamese forces

Lam Son 719 was the invasion of Laos by ARVN troops in 1971. As a test of 'Vietnamization", the operation was conducted without American advisors. The Dewey Canyon part was conducted by American troops to keep supply lines open to the Lao border. The 719 came from the year of the operation, 1971, and the area were it took place, Highway 9.
2. What was Operation Game Warden?

Answer: Interdiction of VC supplies in Mekong Delta area

Game Warden was a long term project, lasting 1965-1970. It goal was to disrupt VC use of the the network of streams and rivers in the Mekong Delta for military operations.
3. What was Operation Rolling Thunder?

Answer: Bombing campaign against North Vietnam ordered by President Johnson

This operation was a three and one half year bombing mission of North Vietnam. Air Force chief of staff, Gen. Curtis LeMay said the campaign would "bomb them [North Vietnam] back to the stone age" The cost of the bombing was very expensive, costing, in 1967, $9.60 to destroy $1.00 of enemy resources. In the end the operation was a failure.
4. What was Operation Niagara?

Answer: Air and artillery defense of Khe Sanh during the TET Offensive

When Khe Sanh was under siege during TET, about 20,000 NVA troops were estimated to be in the area of the base. Several sources of intelligence like remote sensors, infrared photos and intercepted communications to find the locations of the enemy troops. Fighter bombers and B-52 raids occurred around the clock.

In the end $1 billion was spent and 100,000 tons of ordnance delivered. 31,000 tons of ordnance were dropped by fighter bombers near Khe Sanh in almost 17,000 air sorties. Another 59,000 tons were dropped by B-52 ARC LIGHT raids.
5. What was Operation Cedar Falls?

Answer: An effort to push the VC out of the Iron Triangle

This operation targeted the VC headquarters for Military Region 4. The Iron Triangle was a VC base area about 16 km north of Saigon.
6. What was Operation End Sweep?

Answer: Clearing of US mines from Vietnam's waterways by the US Navy

The 1973 Paris agreement called for the US Navy to remove mines laid throughout the war. The operation started on February 6, 1973 and after a pause, ended on July 18, 1973.

Answer: The incursion of Cambodia by US and ARVN forces

An operation in the spring of 1970 that was supposed to hit Communist bases in Cambodia. This was one of several operations by the same name that began in April 1968.

Starlite was one of the first major operations of the US involvement in Vietnam. It was to eliminate the 1st VC Regiment Quang Tri Province.

This operation was supposed to compliment Operation Rolling Thunder and cut supplies moving down the Ho Chi Minh in Laos. Restrictive target selection limited the effectiveness of the operations.

Answer: A 1972 mission to locate some POWs that supposedly escaped from a prison near Hanoi

The US Navy had intelligence of a possible escape attempt by POWs from a camp near Hanoi. Thunderhead was the attempt to conduct a rescue. No prisoners were rescued and it was later found out that the escape had been called off.

Answer: The return of US prisoners of war

On January 27, 1973 the Paris Peace aggrement said that all US POWs were to be released within 60 days. The operation began on February 12 and ended on March 29. 591 prisoners were released -- 497 officers, 69 enlisted and 25 civilians.

Answer: Effort to harass NVA base areas in the A Shau

The A Shau was an area southwest of Hue that had base areas for NVA troops coming down the Ho Chi Minh Trail.

The first flight right after takeoff from Saigon. Other flights successfully brought 2600 children to the US.
