Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Helicopters played a huge role in the Vietnam War. They lent a hand in many different ways. Which of the following ways did helicopters help?

Answer: All of these

Helicopters have played a huge role in many other wars as well, including some of the more recent ones. Helicopters helped get troops from point A to point B; helicopters helped rescue stranded and captured soldiers, and some were armed with missiles, rockets, and guns.
2. Both sides of the war used helicopters, but who predominantly used the famous "Huey"?

Answer: USA

Japan did not play a part in the war. After World War Two Japan had to disband its armed forces completely in view of the acts of aggression that the country had committed from 1931-45. When it was allowed to rebuild its armed forces again from 1954 onwards their purpose was defined in the Japanese Constitution as purely for self-defense, and there were restrictions on their use.
3. Many new planes appeared in the war. Which of these was NOT a new plane the Vietnam War?

Answer: Messerschmitt Bf-109 (Plane)

The Messerschmitt Bf-109 was a German plane used in World War 2.

The Germans had nothing to do with the Vietnam War. As in the case of Japan, the German armed forces were disbanded after World War Two. In 1955 West Germany was allowed to form armed forces again. Although West Germany became a member of NATO, there were strict limitations on their use. At the time of the Vietnam War it was generally taken for granted that the (West) German armed forces could not be deployed abroad except on a very limited basis and under NATO command. NATO was not a party to the Vietnam War. Moreover, there was no popular sentiment in West Germany for participation in the Vietnam War. (East Germany rearmed from 1960 onwards).
4. You may have heard of the Bell UH-1N Twin Huey, but for what exactly does "UH" stand?

Answer: Utility Helicopter

Utility Helicopters often carried ammunition, rations, extra troops, and many other vitals. Without these essentials, troops would have starved, ran out of firepower, or would have hot had enough people to fight against counter attacks.
5. The McDonnell F-4E Phantom II was a great plane in the Vietnam War, but who used it?

Answer: USA

Italy was not involved in the Vietnam War. After World War Two its armed forces were largely disbanded. However, it became a member of NATO in 1949. (Italy was treated more leniently after World War Two because it changed sides - from the Axis to the Allies - in 1943). NATO as an alliance was not a party to the Vietnam War.
6. You may have heard of the prefix AH when referring to aircraft, but what does this abbreviation actually mean?

Answer: Attack Helicopter

Attack Helicopters are used everywhere around the world, Attack Helicopters can have missiles, rockets and guns. Some attack helicopters like the Russian Mil-24D Hind Helicopters, can travel nearly 200mph, and can transport 8 fully equipped soldiers.
7. What does a helicopter with a red "+" mean?

Answer: A medic helicopter

Medic Helicopters provided much needed medical support to troops. Medic Helicopters carried morphine, blood, cloth wrapping, and other medical items.
8. These machine guns were often mounted on America's helicopters. What were they called?

Answer: M60

The M60 fired a 7.62 NATO round, but today, America uses many other guns. Some are gatling guns, but others are anti-aircraft or anti-vehicle guns. These give transport helicopters an advantage when trying to protect themselves.
9. This incendiary gel was anti-personnel, it stuck to you, burned, and resulted in many civilian casualties.

Answer: Napalm

Napalm resulted in hundreds if not THOUSANDS of civilian casualties. It was a gel that caught fire and stuck to your clothes and skin. It was very difficult to get off yourself.
10. Planes were used in various ways in the war, but which of these did planes NOT do?

Answer: Pinpointed enemy strong holds with lasers

Planes did not use lasers in the war at all, and technology was not advanced enough to do anything of the sort.
