Thinking he was facing only the Federal rearguard of General Shields' army, Jackson launched an attack on March 23 which resulted in the Battle of Kernstown. The Stonewall Brigade spearheaded the attack supported by Jackson's other regiments, The Virginians seemed about to turn the Union right flank. Suddenly the situation changed.

The Confederate infantrymen found themselves running out of ammunition and exposed to a explosive flank fire that continued to grow in intensity. When the remainder of Shields' troops became engaged and Garnett's men were in danger of being overwhelmed, Garnett gave orders to retire from the field.

The Federals did not pursue the Valley army very far, Shields was content that he had gained an honor that he would enjoy the remainder of his life - he defeated "Stonewall" Jackson in battle.

Within a couple of days Jackson accused General Garnett of a long list of failures at Kernstown, removed him from command and put him under arrest. The army was stunned, and most officers openly rebelled. Jackson was uncompromising and refused to reinstate General Garnett. Garnett would return to duty and died later in the war, leading a brigade in Pickett's charge at Gettysburg, just weeks after he had been a pallbearer at Jackson's funeral.

Upon assuming his post as head of the Stonewall Brigade, Winder told his officers that he expected the discipline within the command to improve. The fact that the Brigade was one of the most disciplined in the army did not matter. Jackson did not approve of Winder's harsh punishments of the men and the two did not get along.

However, Jackson admired the man's fighting abaility and behavior during combat. Unlike Garnett, he showed a taste for aggressive fighting.
