Answer: Shiloh

(1803-1862) He graduated from West Point in 1826. He left the regular army to join Texas and their struggle with Mexico. He returned to the regular army during the Mexican war (1846-1848). In 1857 he was sent by President Buchanan with federal troops to remove Brigham Young from power.

In May of 1861 he was commissioned as a general into the Confederate Army and given command of all troops west of the Alleghenies. In April of 1862 attacked General Grant at Shiloh where he was killed. General Johnston was wounded in the leg while leading his troops.

Not thinking the wound was serious he continued on and eventually bled to death.

General Jackson (1824-1863) was mistakenly shot by his own troops on May 2, 1863. He was hit by three .57 caliber bullets while returning to Confederate lines after scouting enemy positions. He was taken to a field hospital where his arm was amputated but died eight days later after being taken to the rear.

His final words were "Let us cross over the river and rest under the shade of the trees."

(1806-1864) Before the war General Polk was an Episcopal Bishop of Louisiana. General Polk was born in Raleigh, North Carolina. He graduated from West Point in 1827 with future Confederate President Jefferson Davis and Albert Sidney Johnston. He was beloved by many Sotherners and Northerners alike. Shortly before he was killed he had baptized Generals Joseph E. Johnson and John Bell Hood.

He was killed while under artillery fire from one of General Sherman's units. An artillery round passed through one arm, his chest and out the other side.

(1825-1865) General Hill graduated from West Point in 1847. He was known for his red battle shirt and aggressive attacks at the head of the famed "Light Division". He resigned his US commision on March 1, 1861 and joined the Southern army. Prior to his death he fought in many major fights including Bull Run, Gettysburg, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, and many others. Hill was shot and killed during the fall of Petersburg after encountering a wandering group of Federal soldiers.

(1834-1863) General Pender was born in Edgecomb county, North Carolina and graduated from West Point in 1854 ranked 19th out of a graduating class of 46. He resigned from the U. S. Army on March 21st, 1861 and joined the Confederate army as an artillery captain. Working up through the ranks, General Pender led the "Light Division" at Gettysburg after General Hill had been promoted to Corps. command. General Pender was wounded in the thigh during the second day of fighting.

While being taken to the rear he developed an hemorrhage and though he managed to stop the bleeding, he died several hours later after having his leg amputated.

General Stuart (1833-1864) was born in Ararat, Virginia and attended Emory and Henry College from 1848 till 1850. He attended West Point from 1850 till 1854 when he graduated. He was Robert E. Lee's most trusted cavalry officer and was known as "the eyes and ears of Robert E. Lee".

He was the commanding officer of cavalry of Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. In 1863, at Brandy Station, he commanded nearly 10,000 troops in the largest cavalry battle of the Civil War. General Stuart died after being wounded while trying to block an attack by General Sheridan at the Battle of Yellow Tavern.

General Bee (1824-1861) graduated from West Point in 1845, resigned from the U. S. Army in 1861, and joined a South Carolina unit. His death early in the war was considered a tragic blow to the Southern cause. He was considered by his fellow officers to have great potential.

He is most famous for giving General Jackson the nickname "Stonewall" while trying to rally his on troops. General Bee was killed by long range fire during First Bull Run.

(1829-1864) General Rodes was born in Lynchburg, Virginia on March 30th. He graduated from Virginia Military Institute in 1848 ranking 10th out of 24 graduates. In May of 1861 he was Commissoned a Col. in the 5th Alabama Infantry Regiment. He became a Major General in May of 1863 fighting at Gettysburg, The Wilderness, and others. General Rodes was killed when a Union shell fragment struck him in the face.

(1837-1864) General Ramseur was born in Lincolnton, North Carolina. He graduated from West Point in 1861 14th out of 41 cadets. This was the last graduating class from West Point before the Civil War. When South Carolina seceded he joined the Confederate Army.

He was seriously wounded at Malvern Hill but recovered. In 1862 he became the youngest general in the Confederate Army at 25. He was wounded a second time at Chancellorsville but once again recovered. He also fought gallantly at Gettysburg but his luck finally ran out in October of 1864 at Cedar Creek.

After having two horses shot out from under him and being wounded once he was killed when a bullet pierced each of his lungs.

(1828-1864) General Cleburne was born in Ireland and immigrated to the United States. Prior to coming to America he had served in the British Army. In 1860 he formed a group of sharpshooters into a unit called the "Yell Rifles" in Arkansas. He became a Captain of infantry when Arkansas seceded.

He served at Shiloh, Richmond, Kentucky, and Atlanta among other places. Among his fellow officers he was known as the "Stonewall Jackson of the West". He died during a frontal assault on entrenched Union forces across an open field.

The Confederacy lost six Generals during the battle of Franklin.
