Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1905 the tomb of two individuals was discovered in the Valley of the Kings. Although Tutankhamun's ancestry is still disputed, the couple may have been his great-grandparents. What were their names?

Answer: Yuya and Tuya

Yuya and Tuya were the parents-in-law of pharaoh Amenhotep III, who may have been Tutankhamun's grandfather. The revered couple was buried in tomb number 46. When James Quibell discovered the tomb in 1905, it was still crammed with magnificent burial goods despite having been robbed at least three times in antiquity.

The three other couples named were buried in the mummy cache known as DB320, located just outside the Valley.
2. Which archaeologist wrote in 1912, "I fear that the Valley of the Kings is now exhausted" and in consequence gave up his licence to dig there?

Answer: Theodore Davis

Davis had a licence to dig in the Valley, while Carnarvon and Carter worked in the nearby Deir el-Bahri. In 1907 Davis had discovered a cache with items featuring Tutankhamun's name. While Carter did inventory work for Davis, he became interested in locating the little-known king's tomb. When Carnarvon took over Davis' digging licence in 1914, Carter started searching for the tomb.
3. Carter searched for the king's tomb for many fruitless seasons. By 1922 Carnarvon was unwilling to keep funding the project. Carter pointed out to him that there was still one area they had not explored. What was the area being used as?

Answer: Access to another tomb

Tomb number 9, belonging to Ramesses V and VI, is cut into the cliff face with an entry ramp. Although the tomb had been accessible since ancient times, it was only mapped in 1738 by Richard Pococke.
4. Carter had his workmen record and then remove the foundations of ancient huts on the site. On November 4th 1922, what was discovered under them?

Answer: A stone step

The ancient huts belonged to workers who tunnelled out KV9. The top step of the stairway of sixteen steps was only a few feet away from where Carter had stopped digging in 1918. The steps led down to a plastered doorway.

Carter immediately sent a telegram to Carnarvon in England, famously reading, "At last have made wonderful discovery in Valley."
5. Carnarvon and his daughter reached the Valley three weeks after the first discovery. Carter showed them the exposed plaster doorway. The necropolis seal was set into the plaster, featuring nine bound captives and what animal?

Answer: Jackal

The jackal was the symbol of Anubis, protector god of the necropolis. Because the necropolis seal was placed over that of Tutankhamun, it was obvious that the door had been resealed some time after the burial.
6. The seals on the door were photographed and removed. Beyond lay a sloping corridor. What was in the corridor?

Answer: Rubble

After the burial, the corridor had been left empty. The first band of robbers broke through the plaster doorway, looking for oils and perfume. The necropolis guards filled up the corridor with stones, rubble and broken potsherds before resealing the door.

The second time around, the robbers tunnelled through the rubble, searching for gold and jewelry. The tomb was resealed a second time. According to the inventories in the tomb, as much as 60% of the original jewelry were stolen.
7. On November 26th 1922, making a hole in the plaster doorway at the other end of the tunnel, Carter put his candle through it to see what lay beyond. Behind him Carnarvon asked, "Can you see anything?" What did Carter reply?

Answer: "Yes, wonderful things."

Carter peered into the so-called antechamber, a room just 26 by 12 feet in size. The room was crammed with alabaster vases, chests, benches and chariots. Carter later described what he saw: "Details of the room within emerged slowly from the mist, strange animals, statues and gold - everywhere the glint of gold."
8. Ancient robbers had twice violated the tiny tomb. Of the four rooms, which one did they not breach?

Answer: Treasury

The so-called Treasury lies at the furthest end of the tomb, off the burial chamber. The robbers ransacked the antechamber and annexe. Although they broke into the burial chamber, they were probably caught before attempting to open the shrines around the sarcophagus.

The huge shrines filled the chamber to such an extent that not even Carter could squeeze into the Treasury before the shrines were dismantled.
9. Apart from the king in his golden coffins, did the tomb contain any other mummies?

Answer: Yes

The Treasury contained a wooden box with two tiny coffins. Inside the coffins were two female mummies, either unborn or stillborn children. The mummies are unnamed but the general consensus is that they are children of Tutankhamun and his queen Ankhesenamun.
10. What method of transport did Carter choose to convey the contents of the tomb to the river bank?

Answer: Railway

Carter had to choose between camel, porters and railway. He choose the last, even though the railway tracks did not reach all the way to the Nile. Artifacts were packed on railway trolleys and pushed to the end of the line. In the blazing heat of summer, fifty men went back to pick up the tracks and lay the next length.

The journey took fifteen hours. At the Nile, the boxes were picked up by a steam vessel and delivered to Cairo museum. Over three thousand items were shipped to Cairo.
