Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following is the main ingredient of Nihari, Pakistan's national dish? (Mary knows).

Answer: Lamb

Nihari is a spiced lamb stew that is slow cooked. The name comes from the Arab word "nihar", which means morning. However, don't let that fool you as this dish can be eaten at any time of the day and it is both an everyday dish and a celebratory one. The flavours of the dish are determined by the area in which it is cooked.

In Karachi, for example, you are likely to find a spicier version of the dish whereas, in the Punjab district, you may find it created with the addition of milk.

4. Scrumptious starlight mints, clove balls, and candy canes are all red and white striped candy sweets, and are typically which flavor?

Answer: Peppermint

Candy sticks were first manufactured with color indicating flavor. Solid white was associated with peppermint, so red stripes were added to distinguish it from green and white, a sharp mint flavor. Thus many red and white sweets today are peppermint. Cinnamon is often 100% fire red, but "wasabi" and many other wild combinations exist now.

The original "stick" of sugar may have appeared in Middle Age Britain when sugar was rare and used as a medicinal remedy, or to help "the medicine go down" if it had a bad taste. Meanwhile over in the cold areas of North America aboriginal peoples had long enjoyed maple tree sugars as part of daily living. First to carry maple sugar across the sea were the Dutch, in 1631, and then the French.
