Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Kyle is making jewellery, he uses a type of clasp called a 'lobster' followed by which part of a cat?

Answer: Claw

The lobster claw clasp is named after its shape. It has a spring to keep the clasp secure until you press the lever to release it, and is one of the safest fastenings to use for bracelets and necklaces.
2. If Kyle wanted to keep cats out of his garden, which of these plants would he be recommended to have in his borders?

Answer: Coleus Canina

Coleus Canina is also known as the 'scaredy cat' plant as it has a scent which cats (& dogs) dislike. The other options are more likely to attract cats than deter them, as they are all favourites with the feline fraternity.
3. Kyle relaxes by making himself a cocktail called 'Black Cat', which is based on which of the following spirits?

Answer: Vodka

'Black Cat' is made by mixing one part vodka, one part cherry brandy and two parts each of coke and cranberry juice. Other cocktails based on vodka are Moscow Mule and White Russian.
4. Another of Kyle's many hobbies is sailing. Which of the following 'cats' has NO nautical connection?

Answer: Catafalque

A catafalque is a stand on which the coffin is rested during a funeral service. A catamaran is a twin-hulled sailing vessel and a cat o' nine tails is a rope whip with knotted lashes which was used for flogging sailors. A cathead is a horizontal beam for raising and carrying the anchor.
5. Kyle likes to read his horoscope daily. The Vietnamese zodiac features the 'Year of the Cat'. Which singer/songwriter had a hit with this title?

Answer: Al Stewart

Al Stewart was born in Scotland, and the other options are all British singer/songwriters. I had to include Cat Stevens somehow. The Chinese zodiac does not include the cat. Legend has it that the rat tricked the cat, by leaving him to sleep, and took the place in the zodiac that should have gone to the cat.

This is why cats hate rats. The Vietnamese zodiac drops the rabbit to make room for the cat.
6. When Kyle is sitting with his embroidery, being careful not to scratch himself, he could use the cat stitch. What is another name for this stitch?

Answer: Brier stitch

Brier is an alternative spelling for briar, so I hope the hint in the question helped guide you to the correct answer. All the options are types of embroidery stitches. As well as brier stitch, cat stitch is also known as coral stitch. It is used for working lines and gives a fancier effect than the usual outline or stem stitch.
7. One of Kyle's favourite games is believed by some to be a forerunner of rounders or cricket and involves hitting a piece of wood called a 'cat'. What is its full name?

Answer: Tip-cat

The 'cat' is a small piece of wood, often tapered at each end which is hit, or 'tipped' by a stick. In one version, the batter runs around bases, akin to rounders. The game is believed to date back to at least the seventeenth century and was introduced other countries, including the USA, by English colonists.
8. When Kyle is sitting down with his coffee, he indulges himself by eating 'langue du chat'. What type of food is it?

Answer: Biscuit/cookie

'Langue du chat' translates from French as 'cat's tongue'. The biscuits are made from egg white, flour and sugar and are thin, narrow and flat, resembling the shape of a cat's tongue. They are often served as an accompaniment to creme brulee.
9. Kyle has a collection of cartoons, mostly featuring cats, of course. Which of these characters is an impostor, i.e. not a cat?

Answer: Clifford

Clifford is the Big Red Dog, who was first featured in books before transferring to television in 2000. Mr Jinks is from a Hanna-Barbera cartoon where he spent his time chasing Pixie & Dixie ('I hate those meeces to pieces'). Heathcliff was created by George Gately in 1973 as a comic strip. Sylvester is from Warner Brothers cartoon where he was constantly trying, and failing, to catch Tweety Bird.
10. Before going to sleep each day, Kyle takes a look at his model aircraft, painstakingly built from plastic kits. Naturally, his favourite is the 'Tomcat'. Who manufactured this aeroplane, its model name being F14?

Answer: Grumman

The 'Tomcat' was in service with the US Navy from 1974 - 2006. McDonnell Douglas were responsible for the F15 'Eagle'. This manufacturer also designed the F/A-18E/F 'Super Hornet' which carries the Boeing name following the merger of the two companies in 1997. Lockheed built the P38 'Lightning' and F117 'Nighthawk'.

The major manufacturer in the UK of plastic kits for aircraft is 'Airfix'.
