Easier Origami Trivia Quiz

I noticed that the other origami quizzes are hard for most people, so I wrote an origami quiz that should be easier.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. First of all, what is basic origami?

Answer: Folding paper to make shapes

Origami models can be flat or three-dimensional. Basic origami always starts with a square piece of paper that may not be further cut or ripped.
2. Where was origami developed?

Answer: Japan

The Chinese were actually the first to do origami, but they did very little before passing it on to the Japanese. The Japanese developed origami and made it into an art.
3. Origami comes from two Japanese words, ori and kami. What do they mean?

Answer: Folding Paper

Ori means folding, and kami means paper. When translated into English, the 'k' in kami became a 'g'.
4. According to a legend, if a sick person folds 1000 of a certain origami model, they will get well. What model is it?

Answer: Crane

The crane is one of the most famous origami models. It is not too hard, but it has a few complex steps.
5. What shape paper is used for traditional origami?

Answer: Square

Squares are traditionally used, but 2x1 rectangles are also sometimes used. There are also models using letter-sized paper (8.5x11 inches) and American dollar bills.
6. In what type of folds do you fold the edge or corner of a model in front of the rest of the model and fold the edge or corner of a model behind the rest of the model?

Answer: Valley and Mountain

When the paper is folded as a valley and opened slightly, it looks like a valley. In origami instructions, a valley fold is shown as a dashed line. When the paper is folded as a mountain and opened slightly, it looks like a mountain. In origami instructions, a mountain fold is shown as a line with alternating dots and dashes.
7. In origami, what is a sink?

Answer: A fold where you turn a section of the model inside out

I hope you got this one! A half-closed sink is not too hard, but a closed sink is hard for even the most experienced origami artists. When I did it the first time, it took me about 30 minutes!
8. You've got a square piece of paper and directions. Which of these is the most helpful?

Answer: A hard surface to work on

Origami turns out best if you work on a hard surface, pressing each fold with a fingernail or a small metal object. I usually use the flat edge of a pair of dull scissors. However, many Japanese artists fold their models in the air. Origami requires no other tools. Even if the instructions are in Japanese, you can figure out what to do from the pictures.
9. You are in the middle of an origami model, and you can't figure out how to make the next fold. Which of these should you NOT do?

Answer: Skip the fold and move on

Never skip folds! This can ruin a good model, confuse you, and stop you from being able to finish the model!
10. All origami models take between 10 minutes and 30 minutes to fold, if you know what you are doing.

Answer: False

No way! There is at least one model that requires only one fold, and some models take hours! I have seen a set of three models that took the artist 3 hours each to fold, and modular origami models, which consist of many pieces of paper in one model, can take even longer!
