Dogs and Their Hobbies Trivia Quiz

Dogs don't really have hobbies, unless you count 'chasing cats', but many of the hobby sub-categories do have a canine connection. This quiz covers some of them.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If dogs took part in Eastern disciplines, Adho Mukha Svanasana would undoubtedly be their favourite position, as it translates as 'downward facing dog'. In which of these would they find it?

Answer: Yoga

The position is similar to that adopted by a dog when stretching itself after a sleep, with its rump in the air and front paws outstretched. For a human, the pose involves the hands and feet being on the ground with the rear in the air, making an inverted 'V'. The position strengthens the shoulders and stretches the spine and hamstrings.
2. If dogs took up knitting, which of these is a real pattern they could try out?

Answer: King Charles Brocade

King Charles Brocade produces a diamond shaped pattern from a combination of knit and purl stitches. It is often used to produce a square, used as a dishcloth, for beginners but can also be adapted as a decoration on a sweater. It was apparently named after a pattern worn by the English king Charles I on the day of his execution in 1649.

The King Charles spaniel was named after King Charles II, restored to the English throne in 1649. He was fond of the breed, then known as the English Toy Spaniel which is still used as an alternative name.

The other options were inventions, although Husky Cable sounds convincing, even to me.
3. If dogs played board games, the canine version of Monopoly, called Dogopoly, would be their choice. It starts with which square?

Answer: Go Fetch

Instead of properties, the game involves buying different breeds of dog for the squares the player lands on. Chance and Community Chest are replaced by 'Good Dog' and 'Bad Dog' cards, and the the playing pieces include a postman, cat, flea and steak. Jail is a kennel, with just sniffing instead of just visiting, and 'free parking' becomes 'free barking'.
4. If dogs drank cocktails, they would choose this one, made from vodka (or gin) and grapefruit juice. It has the same name as which dog breed?

Answer: Greyhound

The Greyhound was traditionally made with gin, but more recently vodka has been more popular as the alcoholic content. The proportions are usually in the region of twice the amount of grapefruit juice to vodka, and the drink is one of the easiest cocktails to mix. A variation is to rim the glass with salt, when the drink is renamed 'Salty Dog'.
5. If dogs took up sewing, they could use material with a houndstooth design, which is what type of pattern?

Answer: Check

A combination of dark and light tones is used to produce a pattern of jagged or broken checks, which are described as resembling the back teeth of a dog. It was first used in the lowlands of Scotland for woollen cloths, but can now be found in other materials.

The pattern was used in the 1960s for the upholstery in some Chevrolet Camaro models, and also made an appearance in 2005/6 when fashion designers Armani and Louis Vuitton included it in their catwalk designs.
6. If dogs decided on jewellery making, one of the designs they could make is a choker. What type of adornment is this?

Answer: Necklace

A choker is a tight fitting necklace, worn high around the neck. Chokers can be made from many materials, including pearls, crystals, velvet and and ribbon. The name comes from the resemblance to a dog's collar which fits tightly around the neck.
7. If dogs created a garden, they would probably plant all of these. They all have a canine connection, but which has the scientific name of digitalis?

Answer: Foxglove

The name of digitalis comes from the foxglove flowers, which can fit over a human finger (or digit). In 1785, William Withering discovered an extract from foxgloves could be used in the treatment of heart conditions, although the plant itself is toxic and can cause death. Wolfsbane is another toxic plant, with the scientific name of aconitum.

The dog violet is the unscented version of the viola, known as Viola canina. The coyote bush is a shrub native to America, and has the scientific name of Baccharis pilularis.
8. If dogs collected cartoons, their favourites would include three of these. Which is the odd one out?

Answer: Hobbes

Marmaduke was a Great Dane, created by Brad Anderson in 1954, who appeared in a newspaper comic strip of the same name. Snowy was owned by Tintin, and appeared in the comic strips 'The Adventures of Tintin' created by the Belgian Hergé. Snowy was a fox terrier, and was named Milou in the original French language version. Spike was the brother of Snoopy and made regular appearances in the Peanuts comic strip created by Charles Schulz. Hobbes was a tiger, owned by a young boy named Calvin, and appeared in the comic strip Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson.
9. If dogs made models of ships, they could include USS Dogfish. Which type of vessel would they have?

Answer: Submarine

USS Dogfish was launched in October 1945 and was the only ship in the US Navy to bear the dogfish name. She was a Balao-class submarine and continued in service until 1972. She was then sold to Brazil and continued in service, having been renamed 'Guanabara', until 1983.
10. If dogs went salmon fishing, they could use which of these fishing flies, named for the dog from which the hair was taken?

Answer: Collie Dog

The collie dog fly is believed to have originated in the eighteenth century, and was created from hair taken from the Border Collie dogs owned by the landowners. Despite having been around for so long, the fly remains in popular use and is effective in catching salmon in varying water types and temperature.

The other names are real dogs, but are all short haired breeds whose hair would be more difficult to use.
