Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Chantico was the Aztec goddess of fires in the family home and what other terrestrial source of extreme heat?

Answer: Volcanoes

Like a lot of mythical beings, Chantico had to pull double duty. She was the Aztec goddess of fires in the family home and of volcanoes. Aztec men would often pray to her before going into battle, so that upon their return they would still find their home fires burning. Chantico once angered the fertility god, Tonacatecuhtli, as she ate fish with paprika. The use of the spice was not allowed to break fasting rituals, and she was turned into a dog.

2. Zao Jun is known by which of the following names in Chinese folklore?

Answer: The Kitchen God

Zao Jun, also known as Zao Shen or Zhang Lang, is one of many domestic gods in Chinese mythology whose designation is to protect the family. Zao Jun is one of the most venerated of the household gods and, by tradition, most families would place an effigy of him and his wife above the kitchen fireplace, where he watches all the goings on and reports them to the Jade Emperor.

3. One of the Australian Aboriginal sun deities goes by the name of Bila. She was a cannibal goddess who would cook her victims over what?

Answer: Open Fire/Giant Flame

According to the mythology of the Adnyamathanha people of the Flinders Rangers in South Australia, Bila would roast her victims over an open fire, which provided a light source for the world that never ended. Horrified by these acts, Kudna and Muda, known as Lizard man and Gecko man, attacked her with their boomerangs. In trying to flee these attacks Bila transformed herself into a fast moving giant fireball and fled, turning the world to darkness. However one of the boomerangs injured her in the east and she was forced to move from the east to the west on a slow movement. Kudna and Muda were honoured for creating day and night and stopping the killing that Bila had been doing.

4. What is the name of the ancient Egyptian city known to be the center of the cult of Ra?

Answer: Heliopolis

Ra was the sun god of ancient Egypt and sometimes called the king or father of the gods. Ra's popularity and importance grew over the years as he merged with other gods until Christianity hit the Roman Empire. Ra is sometimes depicted as a hawk-headed man with a solar disc on his head.

Heliopolis was the center of the Ra cult. There is an obelisk still standing from the Temple of Re-Atum dating back to the 1900s BC, but only remnants of the city lie under the streets of north-east Cairo.

5. In Norse mythology, Sol, the sun goddess, rode in a chariot across the sky. What are the names of the two horses that pulled the chariot?

Answer: Arvakr and Alsvior

Arvakr and Alsvior are the names of the two horses that pulled Sol's sun chariot across the sky. Due to the heat from pulling their fiery load, the gods fitted bellows near the horses to keep them cool. In 1902, the Trundholm sun chariot was discovered in a peat bog in Denmark. One side of the bronze disk carried in the chariot was gilded (coated with gold) and the reverse side of the disk was not gilded. This has led some theorists to believe that the gilded side represented the sun's journey east to west, and the non-gilded side was the sun's journey during the night from west to east.

Balius and Xanthus are two horses that belonged to Achilles in Greek mythology and the rest of the other horses are the names of famous race horses.

6. In Hawaiian mythology, on which island does the goddess Pele have dominion over the volcanoes?

Answer: Hawai'i

Although Pele calls Halemaʻumaʻu crater of Kilauea home, she is said to have dominion over all of the volcanoes on the Big Island of Hawai'i. In ancient Hawaii, she is recognized as the goddess of fire, lightning, wind and volcanoes. Volcanic eruptions coincide with Pele's love life and emotions.

While Pele is an ancient Hawaiian myth, modern day songwriters, composers and television pay homage to the goddess. Tori Amos wrote "But you've never seen fire, Until you've seen Pele blow" in her song "Muhammad My Friend". Karsten Knight wrote the "Wildefire" book series. It's about gods/goddesses like Pele being reincarnated as teenagers. Of course, the teens with Pele's characteristics pay homage to the spirit of fire.

7. Birmingham, Alabama is graced with the world's largest cast iron statue. The Roman god it represents is associated with fire and the forge to celebrate the area's long history of mining for coal, iron and limestone. Which deity is depicted?

Answer: Vulcan

Vulcan is the Roman counterpart to the Greek god Hephaestus, often depicted working at a blacksmith's forge. In one recounting, he was the discarded son of Jupiter and Juno, and grew up under the sea. He got his mom back, though, crafting a beautiful chair that was actually a trap. In exchange for setting her free, he was given Venus as his bride.

The statue of Vulcan (aptly located in Vulcan Park) in Birmingham is the source of some merriment, as his backside is unclothed. It was originally created as an entry representing Alabama at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair.

8. Ababinili is the creator deity closely related to fire and the sun of which Southeastern Native American tribe? (Hint: Past tense of what the birdie sees.)

Answer: Chickasaw

The hint: birdie = chick, past tense of sees = saw.

According to some sources Ababinili is the spirit of fire which manifests itself in fire and the sun, but this is inaccurate. Ababinili is actually the creator god and his name means "one who sits above" or "dwells above". As is the case with many indigenous peoples, he is closely associated with the sun, although to say he is the sun would be a misrepresentation. Throughout history the sun has been seen as the giver of life and, as such, closely related to creation. Since fire is an earthly manifestation of the fire of the sun, the relationship is clear. Still, Ababinili is far more than just the spirit of fire and far more than just the sun. Ababinili is in fact the creator god. This is clearly demonstrated in the Chickasaw legend where The Moon, Sun, Wind, Rainbow, Thunder, Fire and Water all visited Ababinili and he assigned their roles in relation to humans.

10. This Greek God of the Sun was a Titan, and so beloved by the citizens of Rhodes that they dedicated the Colossus of Rhodes to him. By day his chariot, driven by four horses, traveled across the sky and went back to the east through the world-ocean by night. Which God is this?

Answer: Helios

Helios was the God of the Sun and Apollo, who was an Olympian, the God of Light. Over time they came to be thought of as the same God, but they were distinct individuals. Helios was brother of the Goddesses Selene, the moon, and Eos, the dawn. He was the father of Phaeton, who became famous for driving the chariot and losing control, crashing into the earth and setting it on fire. Sol Invictus was the Roman name for Helios. Aethon was one of the horses that drove Helios' chariot along with Pyrois, Aeos, and Phlegon.
