Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This little piggy... is called Kamapua'a. Can you guess what island locale this half-human, half-pig deity comes from?

Answer: Hawaii

Kamapua'a is one of many "Trickster" gods in world mythology. He is associated with fertility.
2. This little piggy... is named Hildisvini. Can you name the Norse goddess who owned this powerful porcine?

Answer: Freyja

Freyja would ride on Hildisvini when her chariot pulled by cats was not available. She is the goddess who receives dead warriors into the afterlife realm of Folkvangr (others go to Valhalla, where they are welcomed by Odin himself.) When she is depicted in art, the goddess is often shown riding Hildisvini through the sky.
3. This little piggy... is the fearsome Calydonian Boar of Greek mythology. It was hunted by many heroes, but can you name the woman warrior who was first to wound it with an arrow?

Answer: Atalanta

The Calydonian Boar was unleashed by the goddess Artemis because she felt she had been slighted in worship by the people of the area. Atalanta is best known from the story in which she loses a footrace for her hand in marriage because her suitor tosses three golden apples while they're running, and she can't resist stopping to collect them.
4. This little piggy... is very upset, because he used to be a sailor. Which spiteful sorceress of Homeric Greek myth is chiefly remembered for her ability to turn men into swine?

Answer: Circe

The tale comes from Homer's "Odyssey"; Circe enchants the entire ship's crew except for Odysseus himself and one man, named Eurylochus. Luckily, the god Hermes helps Odysseus restore his men to their usual forms.
5. This little piggy... is named Gullinbursti. Which tricksy Norse god challenged the smith Eitri to forge this prodigious porker that glowed in the dark?

Answer: Loki

Gullinbursti means "golden mane" or "golden bristles". The pig's bristles glowed like molten metal in the dark. It was forged by the dwarf Eitri with the help of his brother Brokkr, and was said to be able to run on air or water better than a horse.
6. This little piggy... is the Cutty Black Sow. What night of the year are you most likely to encounter this frightening apparition, which walks upright with glowing eyes?

Answer: Hallowe'en

The Cutty Black Sow is a Welsh legendary creature that is said to be able to steal your soul away. In some areas of Wales, a bonfire was traditionally lit on Hallowe'en night, and as soon as the sparks had died down, the family would run home as fast as they could, because the Cutty Black Sow might "take the hindmost".

A 1988 episode of the TV series "Tales from the Darkside" was titled after and inspired by the legendary beast.
7. This little piggy... is Varaha, the Cosmic Boar, the third avatar of the Hindu Lord Vishnu. Which of the following is NOT among the other avatars of Vishnu?

Answer: Lakshmi

Lady Lakshmi is Lord Vishnu's consort. His Varaha avatar is usually shown with four arms holding a conch shell, a wheel, a sword or lotus and a mace. There are temples to him all over India. An equivalent manifestation is known in Sikhism.
8. This little piggy... is called Zhu Bajie. This greedy character, neither completely human nor hog, is one of the four companions of Xuanzang, hero of the mythic Chinese novel "Journey to the West". Which of the following is NOT one of Xuanzang's other travelling companions?

Answer: A phoenix

Zhu Bajie was banished to pig form for flirting with the moon goddess. Although he's generally lazy, as his pig shape would suggest, at need he can defend himself with a magic rake made by the gods; he can ride on the clouds, and he has the power to transform himself into other creatures and objects.
9. This little piggy... belongs to a herd that is stolen away from Pryderi son of Pwyll in the mythic story collection known as the Mabinogian. From which country do these tales come?

Answer: Wales

The tales of the Mabinogian were collected in two 14th-century documents: the "White Book of Rhydderch" and the "Red Book of Hergest". In this tale, Gwydion trades a collection of marvellous gifts for the pigs, but they turn out to be enchanted items made from humble mushrooms, and they soon revert to their real shape.
10. This little piggy... is an oracular sow. Who is the young pig keeper destined for great things who cares for Hen Wen in a popular series of children's books based on Welsh mythology?

Answer: Taran

Hen Wen is a white pig with prophetic powers who is cared for by Taran in Lloyd Alexander's "Chronicles of Prydain". Gwydion, Eilonwy and Gurgi are also important characters in the five-book series.
