Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Pitiful creature of darkness... What kind of life have you known? God give me courage to show you you are not alone...

Answer: Down Once More

The "Phantom of the Opera" is an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical based on the 1910 novel of the same name by Gaston Leroux. The story revolves around Christine Daae, a young soprano at the Paris Opera House, who has been having secret music lessons from the Phantom who lives in the labyrinths below. He becomes obsessed with her and complications ensue when her old childhood friend Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny, becomes the new patron and the pair fall in love.

This is sung by Christine in the final song. The Phantom has taken her back down into the labyrinth and has captured Raoul. He has given Christine the choice of saving Raoul's life by choosing to be with him.

Christine shows compassion in this verse and then kisses him, which saves both their lives as the Phantom frees Raoul and leaves them.
2. Bad news on soprano scene, First Carlotta, now Christine. Still at least the seats get sold, Gossip's worth its weight in gold.

Answer: Notes

The lyricist was changed a number of times. Lloyd Weber wanted Jim Steinman, but he was unavailable. Alan Jay Lerner began writing them, but became ill and had to withdraw. Then Richard Stilgoe wrote most of the show before being replaced by Charles Hart, who rewrote most of them. The final credits read "Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, lyrics by Charles Hart, additional lyrics by Richard Stilgoe and a libretto by Lloyd Webber and Stilgoe."

'Notes' is sung halfway through Act One. Unlike most of the songs it has multiple singers - managers Andre and Firmin, Raoul, Carlotta the prima donna, Piangi the leading man, Madame Giry and her daughter Meg. All of them come in with different notes they have received from the Phantom.

Firmin sings this line referring to scenery falling on Carlotta and then the Phantom stealing Christine.
3. Insolent boy! This slave of fashion basking in your glory! Ignorant fool! This brave young suitor, sharing in my triumph!

Answer: The Mirror

Lloyd Webber's score is that of two distinct styles. The musical has a few operas performed within the story line, which gave him the opportunity for some grand operatic movements in addition to the usual numbers found in most musical theatre productions. The original orchestra size was a 27 piece, it was performed with 14 pieces while on tour and 45 at its 25th anniversary concert.

The Phantom sings this in the dressing room just after Christine has sung for the first time. Raoul comes in to congratulate her and invites her to supper, and the Phantom is not happy.
4. Twisted every way, what answer can I give? Am I to risk my life to win the chance to live? Can I betray the man who once inspired my voice? Do I become his prey? Do I have any choice?

Answer: We Have All Been Blind

The musical opened on the West End in 1986 and Broadway two years later. Both had Sarah Brightman as Christine, Michael Crawford as the Phantom, and Steve Barton as Raoul.

The musical began at His Majesty's Theatre in London where it had a continuous run until 2020 when it had to close due to COVID. It reopened at the same theatre in July 2021.

This verse, sung by Christine, is midway through the Second Act. Andre, Firmin and Raoul are talking of setting a trap for the Phantom and using her as bait.
5. Let me be your shelter let me be your light You're safe, No one will find you, your fears are far behind you...

Answer: All I Ask of You

The original Broadway production closed in April 2023 as the longest running show in its history. It was also the most financially successful entertainment event until "The Lion King" surpassed it in 2014.

These lyrics are from the famous Act One love duet between Raoul and Christine. This particular line is from Raoul as he is trying to reassure her. The refrain from it is used in several songs throughout the show.
6. Remember me once in a while - please promise me you'll try. When you find that, once again, you long to take your heart back and be free.

Answer: Think of Me

In 2011 the Royal Albert Hall created a live recorded stage performance for its 25th anniversary. Produced by Cameron Mackintosh with staging and choreography by Gillian Lynne it was a spectacular affair. Lloyd Webber and numerous performers who played Phantom around the world were in attendance.

The song is Christine's first solo near the beginning of the show. This is sung as part of the aria within the musical. Carlotta has walked out and Christine takes over.
7. Close your eyes and Surrender to your darkest dreams, Purge your thoughts of the life You knew before.

Answer: The Music of the Night

A film adaptation was first planned for 1989 but for various reasons was not made until 15 years later. It was shot entirely inside a studio with miniatures and computer graphics used for many scenes.

Although not a favourite with the critics, it was a huge hit with the audiences, grossing over $154 million dollars.

This is Phantoms famous solo from Act One. He has just taken Christine down to the labyrinths for the first time and she has fainted. He lays her on the bed and covers her up and sings to her.
8. Try to forgive, teach me to live, Give me the strength to try. No more memories no more silent tears, No more gazing across the wasted years.

Answer: Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again

As off the last count in 2019 the show had been seen in 183 cities in 41 countries on 6 continents and viewed by over 140 million people. It has won over 70 major theatre awards including a Laurence Olivier and seven Tonys. Its original London Cast Recording was the first in British history for a musical to enter onto the charts at number one.

The song is from Act Two, with Christine at the cemetery singing to her father who died when she was young.
9. Christine, you must have been dreaming, Stories like this can't come true. Christine, you are talking in riddles, And it's not like you.

Answer: Angel of Music

In 2006 The Venetian Las Vegas had a purpose built theatre made to look like the Palais Garnier and staged a production named "Phantom: The Las Vegas Spectacular".
The show cut about 45 mins from the musical and the other 95 minutes ran with no intermission. It played for five years before closing due to financial reasons.

The song is sung after "Think of Me" (Question 6). Christine is in her dressing room and her friend Meg Giry, one of the ballet corps, comes in to congratulate her. Christine is trying to explain the 'Angel of Music' to her.
10. Sing once again with me, Our strange duet, My power over you grows stronger yet.

Answer: The Phantom of the Opera

A sequel to the original, "Love Never Dies", opened on the West End in 2010. This is not based on the original Leroux novel, but is a loose adaptation of "The Phantom of Manhattan" by Frederick Forsyth, who was also on the production team.

It is supposedly set 10 years after the original (the timeline does not match up), when Raoul, Christine, and son Gustave travel to perform in Brooklyn, unaware that the Phantom is pulling the strings.

The song comes after "The Mirror' (question three). Raoul has left the dressing room and the Phantom entices Christine beyond the mirror and down into the labyrinth. They sing this duet in the boat on the way down. This particular line is by the Phantom.
