Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Big Ears and his friend Noddy live here with their toy friends.

Answer: Toyland

Noddy, a little wooden man with a nodding head, and Big Ears, a Brownie, meet in the first book when Noddy accidentally knocks Big Ears off his bike. A father-figure to Noddy, Big Ears learns that Noddy has run away from his maker, Old Man Carver. Big Ears persuades Noddy to jump on a train and go to Toyland where he will fit right in.

He looks after Noddy and helps him find a place to live and make friends, giving him lots of sage advice on the way.
2. Jimmy Brown has all sorts of fun when his father gets a job as a carpenter here, working for Mr. Galliano, and gets to travel all over the place.

Answer: Circus

First published in 1938, "The Galliano's Circus" series is three books - "Mr Galliano's Circus", "Hurrah for the Circus!" and "Circus Days Again". Mr Galliano is always dressed up in his big top finery, and wearing his top hat. Jimmy loves Lucky the dog and makes friends with Lotta, who rides horses.
3. Darrell Rivers arrives at this school in the same term as the girl who will become her best friend, Sally Hope.

Answer: Malory Towers

'First Term at Malory Towers' was published in 1946 and was the first in a six-book series. Darrel and her friends reside in the North Tower and Miss Potts is the housemistress. Girls come and go, but Sally and Darrell remain steadfast friends, despite some of the things that happen at this wonderful boarding school.
4. The Famous Five have their first big adventure here, a place owned by George's family.

Answer: Kirrin Island

The Famous Five consist of four children and a dog: siblings Julian, Dick, Anne, their cousin 'George' (really Georgina) and their dog Timmy. The 21 adventures they have together lead them to some exciting and dangerous places, and they manage variously to find gold ingots, put bad guys in gaol and consume ginger beer, ham sandwiches and hard boiled eggs in quantity. Kirrin Island was based on Corfe Castle on the Isle of Purbeck, Dorset, which Enid Blyton visited regularly.
5. The guests are tricked out of all the yummy food by a naughty goblin who crashes a tea party here.

Answer: Dumpy Wizard's house

The story of 'The Dumpy Wizard's Party' was first published in the 'Jolly Story Book'. The Dumpy Wizard was having a tea party and he invited the whole village - all except for the mischievous and sneaky goblin. Everyone knew how wonderful the Wizard's parties were - pink sugar rabbits, jelly, and all manner of culinary delights!

During the party, the policeman turned up and told them there had been a complaint about all the noise. He ordered them outside to listen to the terrible noise they were making - and everyone went out to listen. They didn't hear any noise (well, they were all outside!) so they went back inside - only to find that the goblin had dressed up as the policeman and while they were outside listening to themselves, he had filled his hat with all the goodies and made off. They all saw the funny side and invited the goblin back to the party. The goblin brought the food back with him, so they all had fun in the end!
6. Moon Face and Dame Wash-a-lot live here, an arboreal paradise.

Answer: Magic Faraway Tree

The 'Faraway' series ('The Enchanted Wood' (1939), 'The Magic Faraway Tree' (1943), 'The Folk of the Faraway Tree' (1946) and 'Up the Faraway Tree' (1951)) tells the story of Jo, Bessie and Fanny whose family have recently moved to the country. While exploring the nearby woods they come across an enchanted tree that has strange new worlds at the top each week. Moonface introduces them to his Slippery-Slip that allows them to go down the tree without having to climb each time. They have all sorts of adventures - some not very nice! - and make good friends with the fairy folk who inhabit the tree.
7. In 'Secret Seven on the Trail' the club members are sent on a wild goose chase to this location, but on the way find a real adventure!

Answer: Tigger's Barn

Of course, it's Susie who sends them on the wild goose chase, making up a mystery to annoy the Secret Seven. They head for Tigger's Barn, but stumble on Cheeky Charlie, Larry and Zeb, members of a gang of baddies. The Seven work out the gang are going to rob a train and call in the police just in the nick of time!
8. 'The Boy with Loaves and Fishes' retells a Bible story from John 6, which took place at this location.

Answer: Sea of Galilee

Enid Blyton retold dozens of Bible stories and this one is from a compilation of four in a short series that were: 'The Boy with the Loaves and Fishes'; 'The Little Girl at Capernaum'; 'The Boy Who Came Back' and 'The Man Who Stopped to Help'. She also made a collection of children's prayers and collections of stories from both the Old and New Testaments.

Her book, 'The Land of Far-Beyond', was a parable along the lines of John Bunyan's 'A Pilgrim's Progress'.
9. The main characters, twins Pat and Isobel O'Sullivan and head girl Hilary Wentworth, have school fun here.

Answer: St Clare's

There are six St Clare's books by Enid Blyton but the plan was for 18, they just somehow didn't get written. While the twins have a stormy start to their time at St Clare's, they soon settle down and enjoy being at boarding school. They learn lessons about the evils of snobbery and the importance of conjugating French verbs correctly, have the obligatory midnight feasts and get into mischief.

In 2000, 2 more books were written by Pamela Cox to fill in some gaps left by the fact that Blyton chose to skip writing about a couple of forms at St Clare's.

It is thought that these books were written by Blyton to hone her skill on the books that eventually became the 'Malory Towers' series.
10. When Mollie and Peter find a wishing chair at this place, it's the start of some wonderful adventures!

Answer: Curious antique shop

'The Wishing-Chair' was first published in 1937. Mollie and Peter were on the hunt for a birthday present for their mother, and went into a strange-looking antique shop. They were startled when they sat in an old chair that grew wings and lifted off the floor! It escaped the clutches of the mean pixie who owned the shop, flew out the door and took the children home. Unlike 'The Faraway Tree' adventures, Molly and Peter didn't have to wait until a land they liked appeared at the top of the tree, they just wished themselves to wherever they wanted.

The second book, 'The Wishing Chair Again' was published in 1950. A later book in the series, not by Blyton, was published in 2000.
