Nynaeve complains to Egwene that all they've done since they came to the White Tower is clean; Egwene claims it's 'character-building', but Nynaeve retorts that she has enough character. Alanna tells the novices to separate the water from the dirt by using the powers of earth and water to create a weave that acts as a strainer and purifies the water.

She notices that Nynaeve isn't channelling and reminds her that she's been in the White Tower for five months, but hasn't channelled. She tries to get Nynaeve to imagine a flower opening to accept the One Power, but Nynaeve cannot do it.

In defiance, she drinks her glass of dirty water, pointing out that Alanna never said it had to be clean, and walks out.

Answer: Liandrin Guirale

Liandrin, a Red Sister, catches Nynaeve practising channelling with dirty water and calls her a 'disappointment' because she's been wasting time with swords. Nynaeve says she's learned more from the Warders than she has from the Aes Sedai, and Liandrin creates a sword with the One Power, only to get rid of it because she doesn't need a sword to fight.

She pins Nynaeve against a wall and mocks Warders, calling them 'glorified dogs', but when she mentions Lan, Nynaeve loses her temper, channels and copies Liandrin's own weave, flinging her into the opposite wall. Impressed, Liandrin shields Nynaeve and tells her she wants her to use her anger to become powerful.

Sheriam Bayanar, the Mistress of Novices, and Alanna argue over whether Nynaeve should be allowed to undergo the Accepted Test. Sheriam thinks she is strong enough, but Alanna and her Warders are worried that it is dangerous, especially as Nynaeve can only channel when she is angry or scared.

Meanwhile, Nynaeve searches for Liandrin and follows her to a house, and catches her in the act of giving an old man crimson thorn, a poison that Liandrin mistakenly thinks is a painkiller. Nynaeve had assumed the man is a channeller and Liandrin was trying to kill him, and warns her that the crimson thorn will hurt the man. Liandrin hits Nynaeve and screams at her to get out. We then learn that the man is her son; because the Aes Sedai age more slowly than normal humans, Liandrin appears to be physically younger than him.

Liandrin is still angry with Nynaeve, who has the mark of Liandrin's slap on her face, but comes to take her to the basement where Sheriam and Leane are waiting. Nynaeve must go through three arches, and face her fears. The Aes Sedai warn her that not everyone comes out of the ter'angreal.

In the first arch, representing what was, Nynaeve meets her father and then her mother, who saves them from a group of bandits, one of whom stabs Nynaeve in the chest. They manage to get to their home and Nynaeve is forced to hide in the cellar while the bandits murder her parents. When she comes out of the arch, she has a chest wound and Leane heals her. In the second arch, representing what is, Nynaeve is in a hospital in Two Rivers, where Rand's father Tam is dying of a fever. Natti Cauthon, Mat's mother, is the new Wisdom and is angry with Nynaeve for abandoning the village, especially as the Aes Sedai did nothing to help. Nynaeve tries to heal Tam by channelling, but fails. When she comes out of the arch, she tries to go back in, but the sisters remind her of her test.

In the third arch, representing what will be, Nynaeve has visions of Lan and hears screaming. She comes out covered in blood, which Leane confirms is not hers, and is so shaken by her experiences that she walks out of the White Tower, refusing the Aes Sedai ring. An arch appears and disappears. Back in the White Tower, the Sisters fear that Nynaeve is lost, and Sheriam is angry with Liandrin, blaming her for Nynaeve's death. Liandrin smashes her pitcher of water in a rage. Sheriam informs Egwene that Nynaeve has died, and Egwene mourns her death.

Liandrin melts down Nynaeve's ring and gets into a confrontation with Egwene, who thinks Liandrin wanted Nynaeve dead. Egwene tries to channel into the arches to get Nynaeve back, but Elayne warns her that it won't work and that she is potentially throwing her life away. The two girls sleep in the room with the arches.

Meanwhile, Nynaeve is revealed to be married to Lan and they have a daughter, Elnore. Perrin plays with the little girl and Mat comes to visit; Egwene is not there, as she is now an Aes Sedai and is on a mission with her fellow Green Sisters. At dinnertime, a horde of Trollocs attack and Nynaeve hides Elnore in the cellar, and grabs an axe. Although she kills a Trolloc, Mat, Perrin and Lan all die and Nynaeve screams in grief when Lan bleeds out, channelling and killing all the Trollocs. The arch appears again and another horde of Trollocs arrives, and Nynaeve runs out of the arch, carrying Elnore. Back in the White Tower, she comes out covered in blood and crying. Egwene wakes up and comforts her.

While Rand (unbeknown to him) is with a Forsaken, it's Perrin Nynaeve is worried about. Liandrin says that the Seanchan have captured a party of Shienarans, which also includes an Ogier and a blacksmith from Two Rivers, and Nynaeve knows she means Perrin. (Perrin has escaped from the caravan, thanks to Elyas and the wolves, but Liandrin does not mention this.) Nynaeve bursts into Elayne's room, where Egwene is, to tell her that she is heading to Falme. She warns Egwene not to come with her, as Egwene will be expelled from the White Tower if she gets caught, but Egwene insists on coming too.

Nynaeve and Egwene sneak out and discover that Elayne is following them. Nynaeve orders her to go back, but Elayne retorts that Egwene won't hurt her and Nynaeve can't do anything as she can't channel. Liandrin appears and Nynaeve apologises, saying the other girls are with her and that she's willing to be punished for them. Liandrin says, "You are a complication," and slams the girls into a wall with the One Power, knocking them out.

Nynaeve realises with horror that Liandrin has broken the Three Oaths, as she used the One Power to attack fellow Aes Sedai, and that Liandrin was planning on recruiting her for the Dark One. Liandrin brings the girls out of the Waygate on horseback, and the Seanchan guards dump them on the ground. Liandrin cuts Nynaeve's bonds and she and the other girls wake up. Suroth, a High Lady of the Seanchan, orders the girls to be brought to her and Elayne channels, shooting fire into the sky.

A damane shoots fireballs in response and the three girls run away. Nynaeve and Elayne manage to escape.

However, Egwene is not so lucky, as a fireball blocks her path and she is cut off from the others. A damane ties her up with air, and she is captured by the Seanchan and made a damane herself.

Ryma warns Elayne and Nynaeve that the Seanchan have people searching for them, and that their descriptions have been passed around. Nynaeve is suspicious of Ryma, as Liandrin's betrayal has made her paranoid that other Aes Sedai might be Black Sisters. Ryma shows Elayne and Nynaeve a collar and bracelet - an a'dam - and tells them they need to find a way to open it. They have to be careful when channelling, as damane can sense it. Ryma explains that the Amyrlin sent a group of sisters to investigate the Seanchan. She managed to get the a'dam, but paid a heavy price; two sisters were killed and one, a Sitter of the Blue Ajah (revealed to be Maighan), was collared. Ryma still has their rings.

Nynaeve, Ryma and Elayne channel power into the a'dam and when Nynaeve channels, she realises that the a'dam needs to be 'healed' by putting it on a woman. Unfortunately, a damane detects the channelling and Ryma orders the girls to leave, giving them the rings. She and Basan go outside to make the Seanchan think she was the channeller they detected, and though she and Basan fight, Nynaeve and Elayne watch in horror as Basan is shot dead and Ryma is collared.

While in hiding, Nynaeve and Elayne run into Loial, who has been captured by the Seanchan, and he tells them how to get to the damane kennels, but warns them only sul'dam can get in. Nynaeve ambushes Seta and puts the collar on her, and Elayne knocks her out. Nynaeve steals Seta's clothes and forces her to dress up as a damane, and interrogates her about the kennels. The Whitecloaks invade Falme and attack the Seanchan, and Seta is shot dead by an arrow, removing the bracelet from Nynaeve's wrist.

Meanwhile, the tower where the damane are standing is hit by catapults and multiple damane and sul'dam are killed, but Egwene and Renna both survive the attack. Renna lays into Egwene, blaming her for the attack. Egwene takes the collar of a dead damane and puts it on Renna, revealing what she has realised: that sul'dam can channel. When Renna tries to attack Egwene, she gets a taste of her own medicine when Egwene hangs her from a pillar by her collar. Renna dies and Egwene is freed.

Nynaeve does try to use saidar to heal Elayne, but her mental block prevents her, so she has to resort to traditional methods and pushes the arrow through Elayne's leg. Nynaeve and Elayne climb to the top of the tower, where they find Egwene, Perrin, Mat and Rand facing off against Ishamael. Ishamael tricks Mat into stabbing Rand with the dagger and Elayne, who Rand has not met before, uses channelling to heal him instead. Nynaeve and the others stand on top of the tower as Rand is officially proclaimed as the Dragon Reborn.
