Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which country do Egwene, Elayne and Nynaeve head to in 'The Dragon Reborn' to hunt for the group of Black sisters?

Answer: Tear

Siuan Sanche is not pleased with Egwene and Nynaeve for wandering off and charges them with hunting the Black Ajah - despite them only being Accepted - as she does not trust any of the full sisters. Elayne Trakand also joins in the search, despite not being asked. Lanfear disguises herself as Else Grinwell (a novice who was kicked out for being too boy-crazy and lazy) and plants various objects belonging to the thirteen Black sisters in the White Tower, along with objects associated with Tear, such as a map and a timetable of ships to Tear, leading Egwene and friends to conclude that Liandrin and her group are there, even though Nynaeve thinks it is an obvious trap.

When they go to Tear, they meet Juilin Sandar, a local thief-taker, and hire him to help track the sisters down.

Unfortunately, Liandrin compels Juilin into betraying the girls, and all three of them are beaten up and taken to the Stone of Tear, where - as Liandrin gleefully tells them - they will be Turned to the Shadow by a group of Myrdraal. Mat Cauthon manages to break the girls out during the Aiel attack on the Stone of Tear, much to their annoyance.
2. Joiya Byir and Amico Nagoyin are two Black sisters who are captured and interrogated by Egwene, Nynaeve and Elayne, only to later be murdered by Slayer. How does he kill them?

Answer: Nailing their tongues to a wall and slashing their throats

Joiya is from Andor, formerly of the Grey Ajah, and is notable for having a kind, motherly face juxtaposed with terrifying black eyes, while Amico is a former Yellow sister from Arafel. Both women are involved in the capture of Egwene, Nynaeve and Elayne in 'The Dragon Reborn', and Amico - the weakest of the Black sisters - is tasked with guarding them in the Stone of Tear and keeping them shielded. Nynaeve punches her, knocking her out and breaking the shield, and Egwene ties both Joiya and Amico up after meeting them in Tel'aran'rhiod. Both Black sisters are captured for questioning, and Amico is stilled; Joiya claims she has repented, but Nynaeve does not believe her. Amico tells the girls to go to Tanchico, as there is something there that can harm Rand and she believes Liandrin is interested in it, but insists that she cannot say much more than that. Trollocs attack the Stone in 'The Shadow Rising', and during the confusion, Slayer kills Amico and Joiya by nailing their tongues to a wall, then slashing their throats.
3. The Black sisters move to Tanchico in 'The Shadow Rising' and take up residence in the home of a Darkfriend merchant. Liandrin abuses a maid (who is actually Moghedien in disguise), threatening to have her punished for not cleaning properly. What is this maid called?

Answer: Gyldin

Liandrin comes from a working-class family and is ashamed of her background, and tries to imitate the ways of nobles, but talks in her native Tanaboner dialect when stressed or angry. She is annoyed that Gyldin does not curtsey to her and orders her to clean, slipping into Taraboner dialect - which makes her even more tetchy - and then abuses her again and orders her to report to the cook for punishment when Gyldin is cleaning during the sisters' meeting.

In 'The Fires of Heaven', when the Black sisters are in Amadicia, Liandrin discovers that 'Gyldin' is actually Moghedien, one of the Forsaken, who has gone to Tanchico to keep an eye on the Black sisters; she finds this out when she tries to discipline the servant, only for 'Gyldin' to shield her and reveal her true identity.

When Liandrin tries to Compel her, Moghedien blocks her, before showing Liandrin how much more powerful she is. (Isendre is a Darkfriend pedlar, Rendra is an innkeeper in Tanchico who looks uncannily similar to Liandrin, and Aludra is an Illuminator from Tarabon.)
4. Which Black sister has a penchant for torture, and ties the Panarch up and forces her to sing rude songs?

Answer: Temaile Kinderode

Temaile Kinderode is a delicate little Cairhienin with big blue eyes and a foxy face, and is one of the cruellest of Liandrin's group. She is in a Heart (a group of three Black sisters working together) with Talene Minly and Galina Casban. She is an equal opportunity sadist, using her time in the Grey Ajah to torture all parties equally, and was a notorious bully as a Novice and an Accepted.

When Liandrin's group take up residence in the Panarch's Palace, Temaile delights in torturing and humiliating Amathera, the Panarch, by tying her to her bed - sometimes stripping her naked as well - and teaching her bawdy songs and dances, expecting her to perform them for an audience.

She also forcefeeds her on ice peppers and tortures her in Tel'aran'rhiod, pushing her off towers. Elayne shields Temaile and knocks her out in order to rescue Amathera Temaile later takes part in an attempted kidnap of Elayne, but is arrested and imprisoned in Caemlyn. During a fight in the prison, she is stabbed to death by Doilin Mellar, a Darkfriend who has infiltrated Elayne's bodyguards; Chesmal Emry, who is also present, is burned alive by Elayne.
5. When Moghedien is injured in Tel'aran'rhiod in 'The Fires of Heaven', Liandrin stupidly tries to attack her. What does Moghedien do in revenge?

Answer: Cuts her off from the Source and Compels her to live

Birgitte Silverbow shoots Moghedien in the stomach with an arrow while Moghedien is battling her and Nynaeve in Tel'aran'rhiod. As any injuries sustained there are also sustained in the waking world, Moghedien is injured and asks the Black sisters to heal her. Liandrin tries to Compel her, only for Moghedien to slam her into a wall and place a block between her and the Source. To add insult to injury, she Compels Liandrin to live, meaning that no matter how miserable and suicidal Liandrin is, she will be unable to take her own life.

She then hands Liandrin over to Temaile to be tortured. Liandrin is later forced to work as a scullery maid; when the Seanchan invade Tarabon, she is captured and made a da'covale (an extremely low-ranked servant) to Suroth Sabelle Medarath, a Darkfriend Seanchan noble to whom she had sold Egwene in 'The Great Hunt'.
6. Which Black sister, formerly of the Brown Ajah, loves cats and collects strays during the group's stay in Tanchico?

Answer: Marillin Gemalphin

Like many other Brown sisters, Marillin and fellow former Brown sister Eldrith continue to be a bit dreamy and absent-minded even after joining the Shadow. Marillin, a skinny Andoran, loves cats and regularly adopts strays, making the kitchen staff at the Panarch's Palace give them cream and healing injured ones. (Unfortunately, it is implied that Eldrith - who is from Amadicia and one of the strongest members of the group - kidnaps the strays and tortures and/or kills them.) One of Bayle Domon's contacts spots Marillin, as it is unusual for a woman to be feeding so many cats in a city where people are starving and resorting to eating any animal they can find, and traces her to the Panarch's Palace. Moghedien later sends Marillin to Caemlyn, where she is part of the group who attempt to kidnap Elayne.

Although Eldrith has her throat slashed by Doilin Mellar when Jaq Lounalt, a Darkfriend, organises a prison escape for the Black sisters, it is never stated what happens to Marillin. It is likely that Jaq helped her escape, but her fate is otherwise unknown, and it can be presumed that she either died in the Last Battle, was captured, or is still at large.
7. Rianna Andomeran is a former member of the White Ajah, from Kandor, and her description is one of the first given to Juilin Sandar by Nynaeve and Elayne when they ask him to help with their search in Tanchico. What is her distinguishing feature?

Answer: Black hair with a white streak above her left ear

Rianna's skunk stripe makes her easily identifiable, and in 'The Shadow Rising', Juilin is able to discern that she is in Tanchico after having talked to a couple of men who saw her. She has the ability to stop hearts - as does fellow Black sister Chesmal Emry - and to make people's blood boil.

She is one of the few Black sisters still alive at the end of the series, as she, Alviarin Friedhen and several other Dreadlords are lured to an Ogier stedding, where it is impossible to channel, and detained there. (Asne Zeramene, a Saldaean, has a prominent nose and tilted eyes, Jeaine Caide has coppery skin, and Ispan Shefar, a Taraboner, has the typical Taraboner braids, as does Liandrin.)
8. Jeaine Caide is a former Green Ajah sister from Arad Doman. Who kills her during the Last Battle when she tries to disguise herself as Cadsuane Melaidhrin?

Answer: Thom Merrilin

Jeaine Caide joined the Green Ajah because, although she hated men like most Red sisters, she wanted to be able to control them, and it is not uncommon for Green sisters to have more than one Warder. Liandrin's group have a stash of stolen angreal with them, one of which is a black rod that shoots balefire; Jeaine is tasked with testing it and nearly destroys the ship they are on.

In the Panarch's Palace, when they are trying to steal the male a'dam and Nynaeve is fighting Moghedien, Jeaine tries to attack her with the balefire rod, destroying property all over the place, although - fortunately for Nynaeve - she has difficulty controlling it. During the Last Battle, Jeaine uses a weave known as the Mask of Mirrors to disguise herself as Cadsuane Melaidhrin, a Green sister and the oldest living female channeller, while trying to sneak into the Pit of Doom.

However, Thom - who has already killed five other people trying the same trick - spots her and notices that she is not walking the way Cadsuane does, and kills her with a knife to the back.
9. Which Black sister, who is not affiliated with Liandrin's group, drugs Ispan Shefar with crimsonthorn tea and then stabs her through the heart?

Answer: Careane Fransi

Careane is a stocky Domani sister who is in the Green Ajah, and is sent to Ebou Dar as part of a group of Aes Sedai from Salidar. She journeys to the Kin's farm with the Kin, Elayne, Nynaeve and the other Salidar sisters after the discovery of the Bowl of the Winds.

At the farm, she kills both Ispan and Adeleas Namelle, a Brown sister who was charged with questioning her after Ispan was captured by Nynaeve and Elayne. Although the group do not know it was her at first, they surmise that the killer must have been someone Adeleas must have known. During the attempted kidnap of Elayne, Careane is outed as Black Ajah and Adeleas' killer, and stabbed to death by Adeleas' sister Vandene in revenge.

It is likely that she and Marillin were in the same Heart, as she knows Marillin is Black Ajah.
10. To which city is Falion Bhoda deployed by Moghedien to search for a stash of angreal?

Answer: Ebou Dar

Falion is a long-faced Kandori woman, formerly of the White Ajah, and one of the stronger members of Liandrin's group. Like Temaile, she has a penchant for torture, although she is more detached about it. She is familiar with Ebou Dar as she briefly ran away there while she was a novice, and she and Ispan are sent there by Moghedien to search for the stash of angreal - which Falion believes is not real - hoping to curry favour with her by capturing Nynaeve.

As punishment for failing her mission, she is forced to watch as Jaichim Carridin, a Darkfriend, is forcefed brandy until he chokes to death. Mili Skane, a Darkfriend working for Moridin, hands Falion over to Doilin Mellar as a sex slave, and she ends up providing him with information. Mellar gets her out of prison when she is arrested for the failed kidnap of Elayne, and she later fights alongside fellow Dreadlord Duhara Basaheen at the Last Battle, but both she and Duhara are killed by Aviendha.
