1. Three Stories and Ten Poems

In 1923, when "Three Stories and Ten Poems" was published, Hemingway was living in Paris with his first wife and his young son. The three stories in the book are "Up in Michigan", which was set in the American Midwest, and "Out of Season" and "My Old Man", both set in Europe.
2. in our time

This volume was first published as "in our time" in 1924. Hemingway honed his distinct, declarative narrative form in its chapters, and included themes that occurred in future works, like war and bullfighting. It was published a year later as "In Our Time" with a new publisher, but, unhappy with what he considered weak marketing efforts, Hemingway switched to Scribner.

He worked closely with editor Max Perkins.
3. The Sun Also Rises

"The Sun Also Rises" was published in 1926. Its popularity and acclaim launched Hemingway into new literary and social circles and into a new marriage, as he had left his first wife and was getting ready to marry the next. The novel has many themes, such as toxic masculinity, war, jealousy, the lost generation, alcoholism, and honor.
4. Men Without Women

Published in 1927, "Men Without Women" included some of Hemingway's most famous stories, including "In Another Country" and "Hills Like White Elephants". In that year, Hemingway's second wife was pregnant and they were about to leave Paris for Key West.
5. A Farewell to Arms

"A Farewell to Arms" was published in 1929 and established Hemingway's reputation as a writer to be reckoned with. The story is about an American serving in Italy in World War I and his love affair with a British nurse. It was a best seller and a film based on it was released in 1932.
6. Death in the Afternoon

"Death in the Afternoon", a nonfiction account and description of bullfighting, was published in 1932. This was one of Hemingway's passions. In that year, he had fathered the last of his three children, and was splitting his time between Key West and Wyoming.
7. Green Hills of Africa

Hemingway followed up "Death in the Afternoon" with another nonfiction book, "Green Hills of Africa", which was published in 1935. It was based on his experiences in East Africa, where he was especially enamored with Lake Manyara in Tanzania.
8. To Have and Have Not

Set in Key West, "To Have and Have Not" was the story of a young family man forced into crime by the poverty brought on by the Great Depression. The year it was published, 1937, Hemingway was in Spain, having taken an assignment as a foreign correspondent to the Spanish Civil War.
9. For Whom the Bell Tolls

In 1940, when "For Whom the Bell Tolls" was published, Hemingway had married his third wife and split his time between Cuba and Ketchum, Idaho, which is near Sun Valley. 10. The Old Man and the Sea

In 1952, "The Old Man and the Sea" was published; this novella was Hemingway's last major work. This volume, about a determined fisherman, was received with wide acclaim. In 1952, Hemingway was married to his fourth and final wife and they were preparing for a trip to Africa. The book was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1953.
