Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Each of the Witches Five in the 'Infinity' arc acts as a counterpart to one of the Inner Senshi. Which of the Witches Five is Sailor Mars' counterpart?

Answer: Eudial

Eudial has red hair, manipulates fire, and teaches Philosophy and Etiquette at Mugen Academy under the name of Yuuko Arimura. She is shown accompanying the Mugen Gakuen students to a mountain retreat near Rei's training camp, where the Inner Senshi are also visiting. At night, Eudial brainwashes the students into performing a ritual, with the intention of sacrificing their souls to Pharaoh 90; however, Sailor Mars and Sailor Jupiter interrupt the ritual and Sailor Mars attacks her with fire. Eudial transforms into her true monstrous form and is killed by Sailor Moon.

Kaolinite later resurrects the Witches Five. Sailor Mars meets Eudial in the Etiquette classroom and tries to attack her, but Eudial kicks her down and scolds her for her rudeness. She accuses Sailor Mars of being weak and not being able to protect Sailor Moon. Sailor Mars is freed when the Outer Senshi storm the building and kill the Witches Five.
2. When Rei first appears in the manga, what is she doing?

Answer: Meditating in front of a sacred fire

Rei is first shown meditating in front of a sacred fire at the Hikawa Shrine, where she lives with her grandfather, and thinking that something bad is coming. Rei is a miko, or a shrine maiden, and wears the traditional red and white outfit; 'Sailor Moon' creator Naoko Takeuchi wanted to make Rei a miko as she herself worked as one while at university. Rei has psychic powers and precognitive abilities, and can sometimes detect evil presences.

She also uses ofuda scrolls (good luck charms that can be found at Shinto shrines) as weapons; the kanji on the scrolls says 'Akuryo Taisan', which means 'evil spirits, disperse'.
3. What are Rei's favourite flowers? (She might have said to Usagi, "This is the start of a beautiful friendship.")

Answer: Casablanca lilies

'Casablanca Memories' is a side story focusing on Rei and her relationship with her estranged father, Takashi Hino, a politician; her mother is dead and she lives with her paternal grandfather. Rei resents Takashi because he never came to see her mother Risa while she was dying in hospital. Takashi and his assistant, Kaidou, always give her white Casablanca lilies and a white dress for her birthday and take her out for dinner. Usagi and Ami give her a music box, which comes from the restaurant Rei goes to with Takashi and Kaidou, and it turns out to be cursed; Zoisite of the Shitennou has been using them to harvest energy while disguised as a woman.

'Casablanca Memories' also reveals that Rei was in love with Kaidou, and that he was the one choosing her presents. Rei is hurt when she finds out that Kaidou is engaged to a politician's daughter, and dislikes men because of this, as she does not trust them.
4. Each Sailor Senshi has a favourite and least favourite food. What is Rei's favourite food? (Hint: it's poisonous!)

Answer: Fugu

Fugu is a type of pufferfish that has a poison sac, so it's dangerous to eat it and chefs who cook it have to train for at least three years before they are allowed to prepare the fish. It is considered a delicacy in East Asia and its liver is particularly poisonous; consumption of fugu liver was banned in Japan in 1984. Fans of 'The Simpsons' may recall that Homer eats one at a Japanese restaurant in 'One Fish, Two Fish, Blowfish, Blue Fish', and mistakenly believes he has been poisoned.

The Sailor Senshi also have a favourite sport each, such as swimming for Michiru and Ami and running for Haruka, and Rei's is archery, a traditional hobby for miko. She joins the Archery Club at school and uses a bow and arrow made of fire in her Mars Flame Sniper attack.
5. Which of Sailor Mars' attacks only appears in the manga and NOT in the original anime?

Answer: Mars Snake Fire

Mars Snake Fire only appears in the manga and 'Sailor Moon Crystal', which is a much more faithful adaptation of the manga. As the name suggests, Sailor Mars summons a giant snake made of fire. She uses this attack to kill Eudial of the Witches Five in the 'Infinity' arc.
6. Yuichirou Kamada (Chad in the dub) is an apprentice at Hikawa Shrine in the anime. Does he appear in the manga?

Answer: No

Yuichiro is an anime-only character, who gets a job at the shrine as Rei's grandfather's apprentice after meeting Rei and falling in love with her. However, Rei does not reciprocate his feelings. In the manga, Rei's grandfather looks very different to his anime counterpart; the anime version is a tiny bald man, while in the manga, he is a tall skinny man with white hair and a beard.

He also appears a lot less in the manga.
7. Each Princess has her own castle, which orbits the planet she guards. What is the name of Princess Mars' castle?

Answer: Phobos and Deimos Castle

All of the castles are named after the moons of the princess's respective planet, and in the 'Dream' arc, the Sailor Senshi turn into their princess forms and call upon the power of their castles to transform Super Sailor Moon into Eternal Sailor Moon. Phobos and Deimos Castle was given to Princess Mars by Queen Serenity. Princess Jupiter has Io Castle, Princess Saturn has Titan Castle, Princess Uranus has Miranda Castle, Princess Neptune has Triton Castle, and Princess Pluto has Charon Castle.

The only exceptions to the naming scheme are Princess Mercury and Princess Venus; as neither planet has moons, their castles are named after space probes (Mariner Castle and Magellan Castle respectively).
8. When is Rei's birthday? (Hint: think planets and the Western Zodiac.)

Answer: 17 April

Each sign of the Western Zodiac is ruled by a different planet, with the exception of Cancer (ruled by the Moon - Sailor Moon and Sailor Chibi Moon are Cancerians) and Leo (Mamoru/Tuxedo Mask's sign, ruled by the Sun). Mars is the ruler of Aries, a fire sign, hence Rei's star sign. As for the other Sailor Senshi, Ami is a Virgo, Makoto is a Sagittarius, Minako is a Libra, Hotaru is a Capricorn, Haruka is an Aquarius, Michiru is a Pisces and Setsuna is a Scorpio. (At the time the manga was written, Pluto was considered to be a planet and the ruler of Scorpio, although Scorpio is also associated with Mars.)

Mercury also rules Gemini and Venus also rules Taurus.
9. Who does Sailor Mars kill during her first appearance?

Answer: Jadeite

The manga version of 'Sailor Moon' has quite the body count, with the Sailor Senshi racking up a fair few kills between them. Jadeite is the first of the Shitennou to die. He disguises himself as a bus driver and brainwashes Rei into getting on his bus, which he teleports into another dimension. Sailor Moon and Sailor Mercury follow the bus and fight him. Luna gives Rei a transformation pen and she turns into Sailor Mars, then kills Jadeite with her scrolls.
10. Rei's two crows, Phobos and Deimos, are actually her guardians. What planet do they originally come from?

Answer: Coronis

Rei's crows are named after the two moons of Mars, and were Princess Mars' guardians during the Silver Millennium. In the 'Dream' arc, when Rei has been knocked out by Tiger's Eye in the Mirror House, they give her her Sailor Crystal and enable her to turn into Super Sailor Mars.

Their true form is humanoid women with wings. In the 'Stars' arc, it is revealed that they come from the planet Coronis and Sailor Lead Crow, one of the Sailor Animamates, murdered Sailor Coronis, the guardian of the planet. Sailor Lead Crow steals their Star Seeds and kills them.
