Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which JK Rowling character, the Potions teacher for five books, was revealed to be hopelessly in love with Lily Evans in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows"?

Answer: Severus Snape

Snape met Lily when they were both schoolchildren on the Hogwarts Express, the train that takes students to the magical school and instantly fell in love with her. Even though she viewed him as only a friend, they were close for several years before he insulted her in front of the whole school. Even though he was still in love with her, their paths diverged as she got married and had Harry, the books' protagonist, while he decided to join Lord Voldemort.

After his master killed her, he devoted his life to avenging her death by acting as a double agent.

As revealed in the final book, his "patronus" is still a doe, even sixteen years after her death, showing that he was still in love with her years later.
2. Which two Victor Hugo characters in "Notre Dame de Paris" were in love with the Roma dancer Esmeralda, though she had eyes for another?

Answer: Claude Frollo and Quasimodo

Quasimodo, a deformed hunchback and bell-ringer, was taken in by Claude Frollo, a clergyman. Quasimodo is instantly smitten with Esmeralda's beauty; Frollo, on the other hand, is lustfully obsessed with her. He believes that she is the incarnation of the Devil testing him, but gives in to the temptation, unable to stop himself. Disgusted, she rebuffs his advances, which further humiliates him. Quasimodo, also in love with her, scares her with his ugliness.

After her death, Quasimodo is so heartbroken that he crawls into her grave and lies with her so they are both united forever.
3. In "Notre Dame de Paris" Esmeralda is sought after by many, but which man, who merely regards her as a fling, is she in love with?

Answer: Phoebus

Phoebus is infatuated by her beauty, but is set to marry his cousin Fleur-de-Lis, a socialite. He does not consider Esmeralda to be of his social standing. When Esmeralda confesses her love for him, he convinces her that he feels the same way, in order to try and sleep with her.

Their interaction is witnessed by Claude Frollo, who stabs Phoebus in the back, unable to contain his jealousy. Esmeralda is framed for the attempted murder and is sentenced to death. Phoebus does not protest her guilt.
4. In George RR Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire", which knight is in love with Daenerys Targaryen, despite the fact that she has no romantic interest in him?

Answer: Ser Jorah Mormont

Daenerys is the last remaining Targaryen after the death of her brother, living in exile after he father was overthrown as king. She quickly amasses an army and three dragons while in Essos. Ser Mormont, an exiled and disgraced knight, is part of her closest entourage.

He confesses his love for her, even though knights are not supposed to take a wife. She does not reciprocate his feelings, even though she appreciates his loyalty and regards him as a true friend.
5. In Gaston Leroux's "Phantom of the Opera", the title phantom is deeply in love with which young, beautiful Soprano that rebuffs his advances?

Answer: Christine Daae

The "phantom" is later revealed to be a disfigured man named Erik who lives in the opera house and interferes with the production in order to ensure that Christina gets the lead singing part. He later abducts her and she pretends to humor him out of fear.

She is in love with the Vicomte Raoul, a childhood friend of hers. After she reveals her fear and disgust to Raoul and Erik overhears their conversation, he kidnaps her again and forces her to marry him, threatening to kill everyone in the opera house with explosives if she refuses.

She shows him affection, and he allows Raoul to escape the opera house before letting her go, asking her to return and visit him on his death day. After his death, Christina and Raoul leave and never return.
6. In Vladimir Nabokov's "Lolita", who is Humbert Humbert obsessed with, despite the fact that he is in a relationship with her mother?

Answer: Dolores Haze

The perverted Humbert Humbert moves in with Charlotte Haze, a lonely widow, because he is infatuated by her 12-year old daughter Dolores, who he secretly nicknames "Lolita". Charlotte later gives him an ultimatum - marry her or move out of her house. He marries her in order to remain close to Dolores.

The young girl eventually figures out his intentions and manipulates him before she leaves his life forever.
7. In JD Salinger's "The Catcher in the Rye", who is protagonist Holden Caulfield infatuated with, even though she has a date with his roommate?

Answer: Jane Gallagher

Holden's early argument with his roommate that results in him being beaten up is regarding his infatuation with Jane, and his roommate Stradlater talking about having sex with her infuriates him. He had a pseudo-romantic encounter with her before the book starts, but he makes it clear that while he was kissing her entire face, she was working hard to ensure that he was unable to kiss her mouth.
8. In William Faulkner's short story "A Rose for Emily", who is the title character in love with, despite the rumor that "he liked men"?

The finale of the story indicates that she has killed him so that he would never leave her.
9. In Victor Hugo's "Les Miserables", who is Eponine Thenardier in love with, despite the fact that he does not share her affections?

Answer: Marius

Eponine is the daughter of the Thenardiers, a couple who brutally abuse the orphaned Cosette. After the family's bankruptcy, she falls into increasing disarray following her family's wealth in her earlier years. To make matters worse, her obsession with Marius is completely unrequited, as he is in love with Cosette. She tries in vain to make him love her until she dies in his arms.
10. In F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby", who is the title character in love with, despite the fact that she is married?

He buys a mansion in West Egg, across from hers, and continues to throw lavish parties he barely engages in, with the hope that she would attend. He confesses to his close friend Nick Carraway that he cannot imagine a life without her.

He is even willing to sacrifice his life and reputation for her after an accident occurs. Daisy, however, makes it clear through her actions that she has chosen her husband.
