Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. While Ripple was on the mountain after killing an elk, an old woman appeared to him. Who was the woman that appeared to him as if in a dream?

Answer: Cold Bringing Woman

Cold Bringing Woman, also known as Old Woman North by the First People, was one of the gods. She appeared to Ripple to tell him that he had been chosen. If he passed the test, he would have a chance to defeat the First People. Cold Bringing Woman was a white apparition with no nose, red eyes, and sharp teeth.

She brought frost, snow, and cold with her and Ripple began to shiver. Once he awoke from what he thought was a dream, he saw a ring of frost and found that his elk was frozen solid.
2. What was the name of the woman that was known as the 'Mountain Witch'?

Answer: Nightshade

Nightshade was a Healer and a Dreamer. She was born as a member of the First People and was the Matron of the Hollow Hoof Clan and the Keeper of the Tortoise Bundle. She was taken from her home when she was young and spent many years in the mountains. She had become allied with Ironwood and she would speak to and Dance with the Spirits.
3. What did Webworm begin to use as his symbol, which he carved into stones to give to his most trusted retainers?

Answer: A basilisk

Webworm would carve the basilisk into pendants. He gave one of them to Leather Hand. Webworm had become bewitched by the basilisk and it lived in his heart. It changed him and made him turn evil. A basilisk is a snake born of a cock's egg, so the symbol was a serpent in a broken egg shell. According to Nightshade, the basilisk was the worst of all evils in the world.

She freed Webworm of the basilisk when she cut out his heart and had Spots through it into the fire.
4. Many of the people got their names from something that happened to them or that they did as a child to earn the name. How did Spots get his name?

Answer: He was badly burned in a fire which left his skin scarred with brown and pink spots.

Spots was originally named Bead. A lodge fire killed his parents and left him and his sister scarred for life. His wounds were worse than his sister's, and much of his left side was covered in scar tissue. The scarring made his skin look like a mixture of pink and brown that resembled a spot pattern.
5. After arriving in Flowing Waters Town with Nightshade, what did Spots begin to do so that he could stay around and keep an eye on her?

Answer: He traded firewood.

Spots had decided that he wasn't going to leave Flowing Waters Town because he wanted to help Nightshade. She had been trapped in a bear cage in the center of the plaza. Traders were nearly invisible and had access to the plaza without arousing suspicion from the guards.

He carried wood in from a nearby forest everyday and would sneak food and water to Nightshade at night. He also became involved with another trader which let him share her house with him at night.
6. When Ripple was in the Dream cloud, who tried to trick him into giving up his souls?

Answer: Soyok

Nightshade sent Ripple into the Dream cloud so that his souls could take a break from his body to decide what he was to do. He had to choose between continuing with his deal with Cold Bringing Woman or saving himself. As his souls wondered in the Dream cloud, the Hero Twins both showed him a different view of the future.

He was then approached by an entity that would not show itself. Cold Bringing Woman appeared and saved him from the being. The being was actually Soyok, or the Blue God. Cold Bringing Woman had to make a new deal with Soyok to save Ripple and get him back.
7. Why did Wrapped Wrist have to rescue Crow Woman?

Answer: She had been captured by warriors in the woods.

Before Wrapped Wrist and Crow Woman left Ironwood's camp the second time to take a message to Old White Eye, Ripple had told him that he would need to save Crow Woman if he wanted to be happy. He didn't know what Ripple meant at the time. On the way back to Ironwood's camp, Crow Woman left before dawn one morning and traveled on without Wrapped Wrist.

She was captured by four of Leather Hand's warriors and they tied her to a pole and tried to make her give up information about Ironwood and the camp's location. Wrapped Wrist had followed them to where they had her and he was waiting for his chance to use his darts.

He killed the four warriors and freed Crow Woman before they had a chance to seriously harm her.
8. Ripple was given a vision of what could be if he refused to follow in the path that he had agreed to with Cold Bringing Woman. In it, he saw his wife, children, and grandchildren. What was the name of the woman that would be his wife if he chose to take that path?

Answer: Orenda

Ripple could choose to die while following Cold Bringing Woman and putting an end to the First People's rule or he could choose to save himself and go on to have a family. While he was in the Dream, he was shown both possible futures and he could clearly see his wife's face and that of their children.

When he awoke from the Dream, he saw Orenda and knew that she was to be his wife were he to choose that path. She was one of the Healers that had helped to take care of his body while his souls were away.

Many people were scared of her because they believed she was a witch, but she didn't have any powers beyond an excellent knowledge of herbs. She also longed to have Ripple choose the path that would let them live out their lives together, but she understood that he had to take the other one.
9. What was the name of the woman that Spots met in Flowing Waters Town who offered for him to share her house?

Answer: Cactus Flower

Cactus Flower was one of the traders in Flowing Waters Town. She traded various items and even offered for men to stay at her house if they had items worthy enough to trade for it. She saw Spots carrying firewood and was trying to bargain with him to trade his load of firewood in exchange for a place to sleep and for her to cook his food.

They became friends and he began to stay at her house every night that he was in Flowing Waters Town. They would go to the plaza every day to trade their goods.

After the Made People took over Flowing Waters Town, Cactus Flower left with Spots to go live in the Great River Valley.
10. After Leather Hand and his men captured Night Sun, where did they take her?

Answer: Talon Town

Leather Hand and his men found Ironwood's camp and took several women and children prisoner, including Night Sun, Ironwood's wife. She had been the Matron of the First People until she decided to have an affair with her war chief, Ironwood. The two had become outcasts along with some of their followers. Leather Hand took Night Sun to Talon Town which had been abandoned when the Blessed Sun moved his main city to Flowing Waters Town. Leather Hand had set a trap for Ironwood, knowing that Ironwood would come after Night Sun. Ironwood never showed up at Talon Town because he died in Flowing Waters Town where his souls were reunited with Night Sun's souls since she had already died.
