Ellie volunteers to look after Katie after her parents refuse to accept responsibility for her. Her father is ashamed by her actions and the spotlight that she is putting on the Amish community. She also feels some responsibility towards Katie because they are distant relatives.

Ellie has a hard time living on the Amish farm in the beginning because she is from the city.

Katie takes a plea bargain from the prosecutor for two years to five but the judge feels that the Amish community has already suffered enough from this incident and gives Katie a year on house arrest. Even though Katie didn't kill her baby, she feels that it's better to accept a punishment so she can move on with her life. That is the way it is done in the Amish community.

Although Ellie says that the cause of death was due to his being infected with listeriosis, he was really murdered by Katie's mother. At the end of the book, she gives Ellie the scissors used to cut the baby's cord and tells her that she couldn't bear the loss of another child being shunned by her husband so she killed the baby.
