Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Evanlyn goes out to check the snares for game but is taken prisoner. Who takes her prisoner?

Answer: Temujai raider

Still very weak, Will is told to conserve energy while Evanlyn checks the traps which are some distance away. She is resetting the first snare when she is grabbed by her throat from behind. When she next wakes up she is draped over a horse which is taking her into a small Temujai camp.
2. Will attempts to save Evanlyn from execution. Why does he end up wounding the would-be executor in the wrist?

Answer: His bow and arrow are not powerful enough

Despite his weak state, Will has managed to track Evanlyn to the Temujai camp, however he is only armed with a small game hunting bow and a dagger. The bow and arrows are not enough to penetrate leather armour, let alone stop a man. As the Temujai raises his sword to kill Evanlyn, he decides the most effective thing to do is hit the exposed flesh on the wrist and get him to drop the sword.
3. After saving Evanlyn, the captured warrior was allowed to escape. Where do Erak and Halt track him to?

Answer: To the Temujai army

Halt is after information but the Temujai have a reputation for not giving anything away. So Halt decides to let him escape during the night. The tracks lead Halt to the Temujai encamped army. Erak has insisted on accompanying Halt, however Erak's inability to move quietly leads them to being discovered. A chase ensues but they manage to get away.
4. Why does Halt think the Temujai plan to attack the Skandians?

Answer: For their ships

During a private meeting with Oberjarl Ragnak, he asks Halt why the Temujai would attack the Skandians when the neighbouring states are a much easier prospect for conquest. Halt's conclusion is that ultimately they want to conquer Araluen. Ships are needed as Araluen is separated from Skandia and the neighbouring states by the Narrow Sea.
5. When Evanlyn's real identity is disclosed, how does Halt avoid Oberjarl Ragnak fulfilling his Vallasvow (blood oath)?

Answer: He suggests postponing it

Evanlyn's true identity is confirmed during a special council in the Great Hall. This sets the Oberjarl against his senior Jarl Erak who has sworn to keep her safe in return for Halt's assistance in fighting the Temujai. Since no particular time for carrying out the Vallasvow was specified when it was made, Halt suggests postponing it until after the Temujai threat is dealt with. This would avoid weakening the Skandian leadership at this critical time.
6. Slagor, a Skandian captain, proved to be treacherous. What was his plan?

Answer: To transport Temujai warriors behind Skandian lines

As Slagor is acting suspiciously one day and she is bored, Evanlyn follows him and ends up hiding on board his ship. Slagor sails to meet with the Temujai Shan, leader of the invading army, and strikes a deal which is to involve him landing 150 Temujai behind the Skandian lines. It is not clear what he is getting in return. Evanlyn overhears the conversation and reports it to Erak and Halt.
7. How are the Temujai marksmen archers identified?

Answer: Red insignia on left shoulder

The Temujai horsemen are organised in units of 60 warriors called 'Ulans'. Attached to each Ulan is a marksman archer called a 'Kaijin'. Their role is to take out the leaders of the enemy while their Ulan is fighting. They wear the red insignia to identify them.
8. Which of the following proved decisive during the battle?

Answer: Skandian archers

The use of disciplined archers with longbows proved to be very effective during the battle. Shield-bearers protected them when they were reloading and it took some time before the Temujai leadership could work out why their attacks were proving ineffective. Various other changes to the normal Skadian fighting strategy also helped reduce Skandian casualties.
9. What was unusual about the Skandian archers?

Answer: They were slaves

Skandians did not use bows and arrows during their battles. Will had to turn to the slaves to find people with some archery experience. The weapons themselves came from booty stolen during earlier Skandian raids. The slaves were promised freedom for themselves and their families if they agreed to fight.
10. How did the Araluan party return to their homeland?

Answer: Oberjarl Erak sailed them up the River Semath to Castle Araluen

On becoming Oberjarl, Erak had to give up his raiding lifestyle. He however decided on one more trip before handing over his ship to his first-mate. This is to return the Araluans to their home. Since he had taken Will and Evanlyn from Araluen, he thought it only fair to return them along with Horace and Halt.
