John Flanagan Trivia Questions

1. What was the name Hal chose for the ship-mounted crossbow he built with Ingvar?

From Quiz
Brotherband - The Invaders

Answer: The Mangler

All names listed were suggested by crew members. Big Bessie was considered too 'girlie'. The god Gorlag did not have a hammer and so was dismissed. Although Tharon as god of thunder did have a hammer, the name was considered too classical. Hal decided to go with the Mangler which was the description for it used by Thorn.

2. As Mikkel was dying, Thorn swore to look after Mikkel's son and wife. We catch up with Thorn six years later when he has become a drunk and it is Mikkel's wife who is helping him. What triggered his descent into drunkeness?

From Quiz Brotherband - The Outcasts

Answer: He lost his right hand in an accident

During the return voyage from the raid when Mikkel was killed, Thorn lost his hand in an accident. He gave up his place on the wolfship and turned to drink to deal with his loss and life in general. It was Karina Mikkelswife who started Thorn's recovery process by employing him in her eating house.

3. What was the main reason that two main Senshi clans revolted against the Emperor?

From Quiz Ranger's Apprentice - The Emperor of Nihon-Ja

Answer: They believed that the Emperor was removing their power

Shigeru, the Emperor, had been trying to improve the lot of the common Nihon-Ja people. Arisaka had portrayed this as a threat to the Senshi clans. Arisaka had been focusing on the loss of power for the Senshi warrior class that would follow. In reality, he believed that he should have been chosen as the Emperor instead of Shigeru, and manufactured a coup to achieve this.

4. How was Black O'Malley persuaded to disclose where he had dropped Tennyson and his supporters off?

From Quiz Ranger's Apprentice - Halt's Peril

Answer: Realisation that his death would not prevent Halt getting the information

Will learnt that the smuggler O'Malley had carried Tennyson and his cronies on his ship but was unable to find out from O'Malley where he had taken them. Halt and Horace then joined him and, working together, the three of them were successful. This was only when O'Malley realised that nobody else in the tavern owed him any loyalty or friendship and would be happy enough to supply the information if he was dead.

5. Halt had got himself trapped by pursuers with dogs. He was under some cliffs with a twelve metre drop into a river on one side. How did he managed to escape?

From Quiz Ranger's Apprentice - The Kings of Clonmel

Answer: He used one of his pursuers as a decoy

Halt did not want to abandon Abelard and knew the horse would not survive the jump into the river. One pursuer, Colly, had sneaked up after dark to try and catch him unawares. Halt caught Colly and then terrorised him into making the leap into the river the following morning, wearing Halt's hooded cloak. Halt directed the pursuers to get Colly further downstream from the river and was able to ride off on Abelard without pursuit.

6. After many years of friendship, Halt finally proposed to Lady Pauline. The wedding at Castle Redmont is all going to plan until ....?

From Quiz Ranger's Apprentice - Erak's Ransom

Answer: The Skandian known as Svengal arrives

Erak as Oberjarl was meant to have given up raiding. He was bored and decided on one last trip. He learnt through an informant that Al Sabah in Arrida provided an opportunity too good to miss. Unfortunately it was a trap. He was taken prisoner for ransom and his crew told to return to Skandia to get it. He suspected a Skandian rival's hand in this and asked Svengal to seek Araluen assistance instead.

7. Evanlyn goes out to check the snares for game but is taken prisoner. Who takes her prisoner?

From Quiz Ranger's Apprentice - Oakleaf Bearers

Answer: Temujai raider

Still very weak, Will is told to conserve energy while Evanlyn checks the traps which are some distance away. She is resetting the first snare when she is grabbed by her throat from behind. When she next wakes up she is draped over a horse which is taking her into a small Temujai camp.

8. What is the name of Morgarath's former fief, when he was still a baron?

From Quiz Ranger's Apprentice - The Ruins of Gorlan Part 1

Answer: Gorlan

Morgarath is the Lord of the Mountains of Rain and Night. Whilst he lives in the area that was once the beautiful fief of Gorlan, he has turned it into a bleak, rainswept and cursed domain.

9. How long after book three ("The Icebound Land") does this book begin?

From Quiz Ranger's Apprentice: The Battle for Skandia

Answer: 3 weeks

When "The Icebound Land" ends, Will and Evanlyn are stuck up in the mountains until the thaw. Will is recovering from his warmweed addiction, and he is almost completely better at the start of "The Battle for Skandia". This book begins with the thaw, so you don't have to sit through the whole winter. "It had barely been three weeks since he [Will] had thrown off the mind-numbing effects of the warmweed given to him as a yard slave in Ragnak's Lodge."

10. With what kind of knot did Will tie himself to the mast of the "Wolfwind" during the storm that occurred on Will and Evanlyn's trip to Skandia?

From Quiz Ranger's Apprentice: The Icebound Land

Answer: A bowline knot

"Svengal noticed that Will was tying himself to the mast with a neatly executed bowline knot. The girl was having some trouble, so Svengal took the rope, passed around her waist and then secured her well." Note: This sea voyage takes them to a place called Skorghijl, where the crew, Will and Evanlyn are forced to stay because of storms.

11. Under which kind of tree was Dirk Reacher's camp (the one under which the Wargals attacked him)?

From Quiz Ranger's Apprentice: The Burning Bridge

Answer: Fig

"A large fig tree grew in the middle of the cleared ground. At the base of it there was a small camp. A wisp of smoke still curled from the fireplace and a pack and blanket roll lay beside it. The four Wargals they [Will and Halt] had been tracking surrounded a single man [Dirk Reacher], who had his back to the tree. For the moment his long sword held them at bay, but the Wargals were making small feinting movements toward him, trying to find an advantage. They were armed with short swords and axes and one carried a heavy iron spear." Note: Dirk Reacher thought he was on a mission from Lord Morgarath. However, he was instead carrying fake battle plans meant to be found by Halt and Will to throw the Araluen army off.

12. In the prologue, Morgarath is remembering how he came to be in the mountains. By which river was the Battle of Hackham Heath fought?

From Quiz Ranger's Apprentice: The Ruins of Gorlan

Answer: Slipsunder

"Then Lord Northolt, the old king's supreme army commander, had rallied some of the younger barons into a loyal confederation, giving strength to [King] Duncan's resolve and stiffening the wavering courage of others. The armies had met at Hackham Heath, close by the Slipsunder River, and the battle swayed in the balance for five hours, with attack and counterattack and massive loss of life. The Slipsunder was a shallow river, but its treacherous reaches of quicksand and soft mud had formed an impassable barrier, protecting Morgarath's right flank." Note: I really do think that name sounds like "slip under", don't you?

13. What is the name of Erak's Wolfship?

From Quiz Rangers Apprentice: The Icebound Land

Answer: Wolfwind

All Skandian Wolfships have a unique name given to them by their captains. Skandians love their Wolfships like their own children.

14. What is the name of the main character?

From Quiz Ranger's Aprentice: the Ruins of Gorlan

Answer: Will

Will is a young man living in a ward at Castle Redmont with some other people. Bob or 'Old Bob' is the breeder of the Ranger Horses. Dillon is a made up name and Araluen is the name of the country.

15. What was Hal's radical alteration to the Heron's design?

From Quiz Brotherband - The Invaders

Answer: A centreboard

Hal's idea to fit a centreboard upset Stig as it involved making a hole in the hull next to the keel. Hal planned to build a coffer dam-type casing in order to support the centreboard and prevent the ship being flooded. The centreboard helped the ship resist the usual drift downwind when it was sailing close to the wind. This meant that it could sail upwind quicker and with fewer tacks.

16. What was revolutionary about Hal's ship the Heron?

From Quiz Brotherband - The Outcasts

Answer: It used two jib-type sails

The traditional Skandian wolfship had a square-rigged sail which allowed it to sail downwind but not upwind. Oarsmen were used when moving upwind. Hal's design used a triangular sail with one point fixed to the bow and another to the mast. The shape of the sail was controlled by hauling in a rope (or 'sheet' to use the correct sailing term) attached to the third corner. This design allowed the ship to sail much higher into the wind than the square-rigged sail.

17. Halt had always taken a couple of days to get his sea legs at the start of a sea voyage. What Gallican term did Alyss use to describe Halt's condition, one which Halt pronounced as 'Malldy-mur'?

From Quiz Ranger's Apprentice - The Emperor of Nihon-Ja

Answer: Mal de mer

Halt had just resurfaced after getting his sea legs. He knew that the rest of the party found his sea sickness amusing and so was not in a good mood. Put on the spot, Alyss described it as 'mal de mer' which is Gallican for sea sickness. Halt, who is supposed to speak Gallican, didn't recognise the phrase and blamed his failing on Alyss's poor pronunciation of an obscure phrase.

18. The Black O'Malley's ship the Claw was rapidly catching the Sparrow and threatening to ram her. How did Halt's party escape the Claw's clutches?

From Quiz Ranger's Apprentice - Halt's Peril

Answer: By hitting the helmsman with an arrow

The Black O'Malley wanted revenge and the Sparrow's captain expected him to drive the Sparrow onto the reef or ram him with his reinforced prow. He knew that there was little he could do and that he could expect no mercy from O'Malley. Halt's plan was to disrupt the steering of the Claw by taking out the helmsman. O'Malley himself was steering the Claw and an arrow in the arm caused him to let go the tiller. The Claw swerved astern of the Sparrow and onto the reef. Halt got some empty barrels thrown overboard to help any survivors.

19. Why did Halt, as the elder of two brothers, not become the King on his father's death?

From Quiz Ranger's Apprentice - The Kings of Clonmel

Answer: Halt chose to go into exile

His parents favoured his younger brother Ferris, possibly over-compensating for the fact that Halt would succeed to the throne before him. Ferris felt cheated out of his birthright by Halt and made several attempts on Halt's life. Halt could not prove this and knew that Ferris would keep on trying, so Halt chose to go into exile to resolve the situation.

20. When Princess Cassandra met with the Wakir (the local ruler) for negotiations on Erak's ransom, she ended up walking out. Why?

From Quiz Ranger's Apprentice - Erak's Ransom

Answer: She realised she was dealing with an imposter

The Araluen negotiating party on board 'Wolfwind' arrived at Al Sabah and were met by an armed party. Princess Cassandra sought an audience with the Wakir which was arranged for the following morning. Various failings in protocol on the part of the Arridi were designed to see if she was who she said she was. One of these was to have the Wakir's accountant stand in his place for the negotiations. When she worked out that the accountant was not the Wakir, she got up and was leaving when the captain of the Arridi Guard revealed himself to be the Wakir. They started with the negotiations again. After these were concluded, it turned out that Erak had been sent inland when the 'Wolfwind' was first sighted.

21. Horace, riding as a free lance (knight for hire), encountered Buttle and four of his men on the road. What happened?

From Quiz Ranger's Apprentice - The Siege of Macindaw

Answer: Buttle and his men retreated

Buttle had been recruiting in the area for some time. His preference seemed to be for less scrupulous types where a criminal record would not be a hindrance. Horace and Buttle got off to a bad start as Horace prevented Buttle and his men approaching too close while they talked. Buttle claimed to be a knight and said that Horace's lack of 'respect' for him meant that he would not get employment at the castle. In fact Buttle told him to leave Norgate Fief before nightfall or else. Buttle's threat left Horace unmoved and in the end Buttle chose to back down and leave.

22. Will's first real challenge is a Skandian raiding party. How does he deal with it?

From Quiz Ranger's Apprentice - The Sorcerer in the North

Answer: He invites them to dinner

The Skandians have not had a successful raiding season but the island is ill-prepared to fight them off. Will negotiates with them by himself and, learning that they are short of supplies for over-wintering on Skorghijl, they agree to leave peacefully in exchange for some supplies. Will also invites them to a banquet at the castle.

23. What was so amazing about Horace's drilling with his sword? Sir Rodney picked this up.

From Quiz Ranger's Apprentice - The Ruins of Gorlan Part 2

Answer: Horace would add an extra stroke to the drill, and yet recover fast.

After five of ten minutes of watching the boys practice, Sir Rodney came down to talk to the drilling instructor, Sir Morton, who thought that Rodney was just making it up. When getting Horace to repeat the drill, he did it without adding. This was when people started to see that Horace had a very good natural way with swords. That way was to become very useful later on in life.

24. Why was Will so nervous in the start of the book?

From Quiz Ranger's Apprentice - The Ruins of Gorlan Part 1

Answer: The next day would be Choosing Day.

It was Choosing Day. Choosing Day was the day that the 15 year old orphans of Redmont Castle were given the choice to choose the career they wanted to follow. Will wanted to go to Battle School, but was nervous they would say no because he was small for his age.

25. When we first go to Erak, he is being ordered by Ragnak to collect some overdue taxes. What name does Borsa, Ragnak's hilfman, say the with-holding jarl should be called?

From Quiz Ranger's Apprentice: The Battle for Skandia

Answer: Sten Gluehand

Erak hates tax-collecting, as he'd much rather be on the sea. However, he's so good at it, Ragnak summons him every time there is collecting to be done. Erak has to go to the village of Ostkrag (dashing his hopes for a coastal town so he could use his ship) and get the withheld taxes from the jarl there. "'The jarl at Ostkrag is Sten Hammerhead,' Borsa said, as if that were explanation enough. Erak stared blankly at him. 'He should be called Sten Gluehand,' he elaborated with heavy sarcasm. "The tax payments have stuck to his fingers before this, and even when they're paid in full, he always makes us wait long past the overdue date. It's time we taught him a lesson.'"

26. Finish the old Celtic saying: "One may be deceit. Two can be ________. Three is the number I trust."

From Quiz Ranger's Apprentice: The Burning Bridge

Answer: Conspiracy

"'The point is,' Halt interrupted, 'of course Gilan can take the message to them [the Celticans]. But if he's the sole messenger, they'll keep him waiting and fob him off for days, or even weeks, while they dither over form and protocol. And we don't have that sort of time to waste. There's an old Celtic saying that covers it: One man may be deceit. Two can be conspiracy. Three is the number I trust.'" Note: Gilan takes Will with him, and Halt recommends Horace as the third member.

27. What is the name of the sea that Will and Evanlyn cross with the Skandians?

From Quiz Rangers Apprentice: The Icebound Land

Answer: the Stormwhite Sea

The Skandians have raiding seasons that go from when it is safe to cross the Stormwhite to when it is dangerous to cross the Stormwhite.

28. When the Herons got to the settlement of Bayrath with its log boom across the river, why were they arrested?

From Quiz Brotherband - The Hunters

Answer: Zavac had bribed the Gatmeister to detain them

Vargas had caught up with Zavac at Bayrath and informed him that the Herons were on his trail. Zavac decided to pay a hefty bribe to the Gatmeister to have him detain the Herons "permanently". The murder of Rikard gave the Gatmeister sufficient cause to arrest the Herons. He then planned to have them executed, regardless of whether they were guilty or not.

29. What method did Zavac use to capture the Gallican trading ship?

From Quiz Brotherband - The Invaders

Answer: Pretending the Viper was in distress

Zavac had the Raven sitting just over the horizon while the Viper pretended to be disabled and in danger of sinking. Using a simple code by flashing sunlight with a mirror, Zavac was able to learn when the bait had been taken. The Viper was loaded with pirates which stormed the rescuing ship and the Raven then appeared to finish the job.
