All names listed were suggested by crew members. Big Bessie was considered too 'girlie'. The god Gorlag did not have a hammer and so was dismissed. Although Tharon as god of thunder did have a hammer, the name was considered too classical. Hal decided to go with the Mangler which was the description for it used by Thorn.

During the return voyage from the raid when Mikkel was killed, Thorn lost his hand in an accident. He gave up his place on the wolfship and turned to drink to deal with his loss and life in general. Halt did not want to abandon Abelard and knew the horse would not survive the jump into the river. One pursuer, Colly, had sneaked up after dark to try and catch him unawares. Halt caught Colly and then terrorised him into making the leap into the river the following morning, wearing Halt's hooded cloak. Halt directed the pursuers to get Colly further downstream from the river and was able to ride off on Abelard without pursuit.

He suspected a Skandian rival's hand in this and asked Svengal to seek Araluen assistance instead.

However, he was instead carrying fake battle plans meant to be found by Halt and Will to throw the Araluen army off.

Hal's idea to fit a centreboard upset Stig as it involved making a hole in the hull next to the keel. Hal planned to build a coffer dam-type casing in order to support the centreboard and prevent the ship being flooded. The centreboard helped the ship resist the usual drift downwind when it was sailing close to the wind. This meant that it could sail upwind quicker and with fewer tacks.

The traditional Skandian wolfship had a square-rigged sail which allowed it to sail downwind but not upwind. Oarsmen were used when moving upwind. Hal's design used a triangular sail with one point fixed to the bow and another to the mast. The shape of the sail was controlled by hauling in a rope (or 'sheet' to use the correct sailing term) attached to the third corner. This design allowed the ship to sail much higher into the wind than the square-rigged sail.

Halt had just resurfaced after getting his sea legs. He knew that the rest of the party found his sea sickness amusing and so was not in a good mood. Put on the spot, Alyss described it as 'mal de mer' which is Gallican for sea sickness. Halt, who is supposed to speak Gallican, didn't recognise the phrase and blamed his failing on Alyss's poor pronunciation of an obscure phrase.

The Black O'Malley wanted revenge and the Sparrow's captain expected him to drive the Sparrow onto the reef or ram him with his reinforced prow. He knew that there was little he could do and that he could expect no mercy from O'Malley. Halt's plan was to disrupt the steering of the Claw by taking out the helmsman. O'Malley himself was steering the Claw and an arrow in the arm caused him to let go the tiller. The Claw swerved astern of the Sparrow and onto the reef. Halt got some empty barrels thrown overboard to help any survivors.

His parents favoured his younger brother Ferris, possibly over-compensating for the fact that Halt would succeed to the throne before him. Ferris felt cheated out of his birthright by Halt and made several attempts on Halt's life. Halt could not prove this and knew that Ferris would keep on trying, so Halt chose to go into exile to resolve the situation.

Princess Cassandra sought an audience with the Wakir which was arranged for the following morning. Various failings in protocol on the part of the Arridi were designed to see if she was who she said she was. One of these was to have the Wakir's accountant stand in his place for the negotiations. When she worked out that the accountant was not the Wakir, she got up and was leaving when the captain of the Arridi Guard revealed himself to be the Wakir. They started with the negotiations again. After these were concluded, it turned out that Erak had been sent inland when the 'Wolfwind' was first sighted.

Buttle had been recruiting in the area for some time. His preference seemed to be for less scrupulous types where a criminal record would not be a hindrance. Horace and Buttle got off to a bad start as Horace prevented Buttle and his men approaching too close while they talked. Buttle claimed to be a knight and said that Horace's lack of 'respect' for him meant that he would not get employment at the castle. In fact Buttle told him to leave Norgate Fief before nightfall or else. Buttle's threat left Horace unmoved and in the end Buttle chose to back down and leave.

That way was to become very useful later on in life.

"'The jarl at Ostkrag is Sten Hammerhead,' Borsa said, as if that were explanation enough. Erak stared blankly at him. 'He should be called Sten Gluehand,' he elaborated with heavy sarcasm. "The tax payments have stuck to his fingers before this, and even when they're paid in full, he always makes us wait long past the overdue date. It's time we taught him a lesson.'"

The murder of Rikard gave the Gatmeister sufficient cause to arrest the Herons. He then planned to have them executed, regardless of whether they were guilty or not.

Zavac had the Raven sitting just over the horizon while the Viper pretended to be disabled and in danger of sinking. Using a simple code by flashing sunlight with a mirror, Zavac was able to learn when the bait had been taken. The Viper was loaded with pirates which stormed the rescuing ship and the Raven then appeared to finish the job.
