Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What two things are explicitly stated to have given Katniss hope?

Answer: The bread Peeta Mellark had tossed to her and the first dandelion of the year

A few years ago, before Peeta and Katniss knew each other, Peeta risked a beating from his mother to toss Katniss a leftover loaf of bread. Although they hardly spoke, Katniss often caught Peeta looking at her. Once, when Katniss was picking Prim up from school, she saw Peeta. Katniss looked down, embarrassed, to see the first dandelion of the year. Suddenly, something clicked in her brain.

She could keep her family alive by hunting in the woods.
2. Why did Katniss kill Cato?

Answer: She felt pity for him.

Katniss, Peeta, and Cato were the last tributes left in the Game when muttations attacked them. The muttations got to Cato and began to eat him alive. Katniss and Peeta could hear his tortured cries all night. Katniss wanted to put him out of his misery, so she shot him in the head with an arrow.
3. Why did Thresh let Katniss go?

Answer: Because he didn't want to owe her

Rue, Thresh's district partner, had been allies with Katniss. Katniss was too late to save Rue when the boy from District 1 stabbed her, but she sang to Rue until she died and covered her in flowers. Thresh let Katniss go, just this one time, "for the little girl."
4. What was the name of the red-headed Avox girl?

Answer: We never learn her name in this book

Katniss never finds out the name of the girl. The name is revealed in the third book in the series, but that is not relevant for the first.
5. Who buys what from Katniss and Gale?

Answer: The butcher buys rabbits, the baker buys squirrels, the head Peacekeeper buys wild turkey, and the mayor buys strawberries.

Peacekeepers turn a blind eye to Katniss and Gale's hunting, even though it is illegal. Even the Peacekeepers enjoy a tasty snack!
6. Why did Katniss threaten suicide by eating poisonous berries with Peeta?

Answer: She wanted to defy the Gamemakers, to show them she wasn't just a piece in their Games

Katniss and Peeta wanted to eat the berries together so the Gamemakers wouldn't have a winner. They wanted to show the Gamemakers that they don't own them. Katniss's excuse for this was that she was a girl driven crazy by love.
7. What is Haymitch's condition to staying sober enough to help Katniss and Peeta?

Answer: They must do whatever he tells them to.

At the beginning of the book, Haymitch is so drunk he doesn't know what the heck is going on.
8. What did Katniss call the girl from District 5?

Answer: Foxface

Glimmer is the girl from 1, and Clove is the girl from 2. Catnip is Gale's nickname for Katniss.
9. Who is Portia?

Answer: Peeta's stylist

Portia's partner, Cinna, is Katniss's stylist.
10. How many times was Gale's name entered, including?

Answer: 42

By entering your name in the drawing for the Hunger Games more times than required, your family receives food. Gale really needed the food for his family, so he entered his name very many times. Katniss's name was entered 20 times.
