Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Katniss referred to one of her more timid competitors as Foxface since she did not know the tribute's actual name. What district was Foxface from?

Answer: District 5

Foxface was from District 5, a district that specialized in electrical power. Katniss decided to nickname her Foxface, appropriately, because her face was like a fox; her real name was never revealed. Katniss admired her and believed they could have been allies had the circumstances been different.
Foxface died when she ate poisonous berries called Nightlock. Peeta had set them out to eat not knowing they were poisonous. Foxface got to them first, ate them, and died. She came in fourth place in the games.
2. Who owned a pet goat named Lady?

Answer: Prim

Lady was the goat Katniss bought for Prim. In the arena, Katniss told Peeta that she got the money by selling her mother's silver locket. However, since cameras were broadcasting the arena, and Katniss didn't want the truth out, she told Peeta a lie. The truth was that she and Gale were illegally hunting and near the end of their hunt, they both spotted and shot a deer.

They waited until night to do the trading, since the deer would have drawn attention had they carried it through the streets of District 12.

At night, they sold it to a butcher. The money they received was more than they ever had before. Katniss decided to use her allotment of the money to buy Prim a goat for her tenth birthday.
3. After being reaped, Katniss spent some time in the Justice Building before she left to get on a train to the Capitol. Who was among the people that visited Katniss while she was at the Justice Building?

Answer: Gale

After being reaped, tributes had a final chance to say good-bye to friends and family.
Katniss's first visitors were her sister, Primrose Everdeen, and her mother (whose name is not known). Katniss gave Prim information about trading that she could do. Katniss told her mother to say with Prim, since Prim would have no family with her otherwise. Mrs. Everdeen left the family for a while after her husband died, and Katniss didn't want a repeat of her mother leaving.
Katniss's next visitor was Peeta's father, a baker. Katniss found this strange since Peeta was also a tribute. However, Peeta's father gave her a box of cookies, saying virtually nothing during their meeting.
Madge Undersee, the mayor's daughter, was the next visitor. She informed Katniss that tributes could bring a token from their district into the arena. Madge gave Katniss a mockingjay pin for her to wear.
Katniss's final visitor was her boyfriend, Gale Hawthorne. Gale helped Katniss prepare for the games and gave her tips, such as finding a bow and arrow, Katniss's weapon of choice (and if there was none, then to make one). Katniss also made Gale promise that he would look in on her family from time to time.
4. The first tribute to die after the bloodbath in the cornucopia was a female from another district. What alerted her killers to her presence in the forest?

Answer: She started a fire to stay warm

At the end of the first day, Katniss hid in a tree. Below her, she encountered a female tribute who started a fire to stay warm during the night. Katniss knew it was foolish to do so, since it would alert others of her presence. However, Katniss said nothing, so she (Katniss) wouldn't be detected.

As to be expected, the surviving careers found the girl who started the fire and killed her. It was also during this encounter when Katniss saw Peeta working with the careers, something no one else from her district had even considered.

The careers temporarily accepted Peeta into their group in hopes of catching and killing Katniss, even though Peeta wouldn't betray Katniss.
5. Which tribute was killed by a creature rather than a weapon?

Answer: Glimmer

Glimmer, the female tribute from District 1, was killed by tracker jackers, genetically engineered wasps. Katniss sawed the branch that held a nest of them. This caused them to get angry and sting anyone who was in proximity to them.
Cato was attacked by a group of mutts, but it was Katniss who shot an arrow at him, thereby killing him. Rue was killed when Marvel threw a spear at her. In retaliation, Katniss shot an arrow at Marvel, killing him.
6. Normally, there was only one winner in the games. However, for the 74th Hunger Games, two winners were allowed if they came from the same district. Who announced this rule change?

Answer: Claudius Templesmith

As would later be revealed to Katniss, after Rue's death, there was an uprising in her district (District 11). Something else that contributed to this was Katniss and Rue's alliance, which went beyond staying alive and into friendship. It was decided that, to appease those people and anyone else affected by Rue's death, that there would be two winners so long as they came from the same district. Claudius Templesmith, the commentator of the games, was the one to announce this rule change.

He was also the one that provided announcement to the tributes. There were only two districts to benefit from this rule: Katniss and Peeta (District 12) and Clove and Cato (District 2).
7. Who did Katniss not encounter during the feast at the cornucopia?

Answer: Peeta

Near the end of the games, it was announced there would be a feast at the cornucopia. There would also be supplies that each tribute would need. Against Peeta's wishes, Katniss went to get supplies for Peeta's wounded knee. Peeta didn't join her, so therefore Katniss and Peeta never encountered each other during the feast. While trying to grab supplies, Katniss met with Clove who was nearly successful in killing Katniss until Thresh pulled Clove off. Thresh then picked up a rock and hit it against Clove's skull. Thresh spared Katniss's life since Katniss and Rue (his fellow district member) were allies.

After Thresh left, Cato rushed over to Clove's side to be with her until she died. Katniss was able to run away before Cato left Clove.
8. During an interview with Caesar Flickerman, which tribute was asked if they had a boyfriend/girlfriend waiting back at home?

Answer: Peeta

During Peeta's interview with Caesar Flickerman, the last of the interviews, Caesar asked Peeta if he had a girlfriend waiting for him. He was hesitant but got around to saying that he was in love with Katniss. This disappointed Caesar, since he earlier said that should Peeta win, the lucky lady would have no choice but to go out with him.
Katniss was angry at Peeta for his comments, but Haymitch convinced her that it would make her look desirable and help the two of them get supporters.
9. Why did Katniss believe that District 11 sent her bread even though she wasn't a member of that district?

Answer: The bread was meant for Rue but after her death, the District 11 mentor decided to give it to Katniss.

Katniss received bread from District 11. She believed that it was originally meant for Rue but was given to her after Rue's death. Katniss was unsure of the reason why-- perhaps to thanks her regarding her treatment of Rue after Rue's death. Katniss had picked some flowers and laid them near Rue as some sort of memorial. Katniss also mentioned that it was the first time in the history of the games that a district gave a gift to someone who was not from their own district.
10. How many times was Prim's name placed into the reaping for the 74th Hunger Games?

Answer: one

Each year, all twelve-year olds had their name placed into the reaping at least once. Everyone who was thirteen had their name placed at least twice, and so on up until the age of eighteen.
For every tesserae a person bought, that person's name was placed into the reaping once. Additionally, the entries were cumulative.
Prim was twelve years old, so her name would have gone into the reaping at least once. She never bought tesserae, since Katniss wouldn't let her, therefore her name was not placed into the reaping any more times.
Prim's name therefore was only placed into the reaping once.
Surprisingly for Katniss, it was Prim's name that was called to be a tribute. However, Katniss ended up trading places with her.
