Philip Pirrip couldn't pronounce his name as a child, so he called himself "Pip" and the name stuck. Pip, as we will call him, was an orphan who lived with his older sister and her husband. Hallward painted the picture that started the whole mess of Dorian selling his soul to the devil in order to stay young forever. Basically, Dorian was so enthralled by the portrait that Hallward drew, that he dreaded becoming old. So he made a pact with the devil to stay young forever while the painting aged. Around two decades later, Dorian regretted the pact and murdered Hallward, even though he really had nothing to do with it.
