'Watchmen' takes place in an alternate reality in the year 1985 with flashbacks to previous decades to show how history turned out differently with superheroes.

Jon had his accident at Gila Flat Test Base, that turned him into the blue god-like being later dubbed Dr. Manhattan. However, it is the Rockefeller Military Research Center where we first see Jon working when Rorschach comes to warn him of a possible mask killer.
