Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. During the ceremony to become Master Mason, who says the following? "I tormented and vexed his inner spirit, but he would not reveal the word".

Answer: Jubela

Part of the ceremony involves three of the Masons taking on the role of the three Juwes: Jubelo, Jubelum, and Jubela. They each tell the Grand Sojourner that their tortures had no effect on Gull. The man representing Jubelo says: "I beat him and tortured him, but he would not reveal the word", and Jubelum says: "I cut out his organs of generation, and he was mute.

He did not reveal the word".
2. Which ancient Egyptian god/godess makes up one part of Jahbulon?

Answer: Osiris

The Masonic god, Jahbulon, is made up of three different gods: Jahweh, a god worshipped by the Hebrews; Osiris, from ancient Egypt; and Baal, from the Canaanites. The Masons are only allowed to learn the name of this God, known as the Great Architect of the Universe, when they reach the thirteenth degree.
3. What is the first name of Doctor Jenner, the Queen's favourite physician?

Answer: William

Doctor Jenner's name is the same as Doctor Gull's: William. When Gull is asked to assist the queen, he wonders why he was called instead of Doctor Jenner. He was chosen because he is a Mason, as is the Prince, and the Queen knew he would keep their secrets - in this case, not revealing the Prince's case of Syphilis.
4. Which title is given to William Gull as a result of his work for the Queen and the Prince?

Answer: Baronet

He is also appointed Royal Physician in Extraordinary. The work he carries out for Queen Victoria here convinces her that he is suitable to carry out the difficult task she appoints him later on.
5. Mr Campbell writes to William Gull to inform him that his daughter is to marry Charles Bravo. What is the daughter's name?

Answer: Florence

Gull receives a number of letters: one is for his daughter, Caroline, from Theodore Acland, one is from Mr Campbell, and one is from Howard Hinton, informing him of his father's death. James Hinton was one of Gull's closest friends, and the news of his death affects him greatly.
6. Which organ does Gull remove from Charles Bravo's body?

Answer: Heart

Charles' sister comes to watch the autopsy to make sure that Gull only examines the body, and doesn't take anything. He removes the heart anyway, in front of her, and takes it with him. This heart is apparently still preserved.
7. William Gull visits John Merrick at the London Hospital, but says he is leaving for a holiday soon. Where is he going on holiday?

Answer: Scotland

Gull visits John Merrick, aka the Elephant Man, and is impressed by his articulacy and manners. John Merrick is pleased that Gull treats him like a human, but doesn't pretend that there is nothing wrong with him. Gull is fascinated by Merrick and his plight.
8. William Gull asks John Merrick, "Tell Me, Mr Merrick, have you ever heard of ____?". Fill in the blank.

Answer: Ganesa

Gull goes on to tell Merrick that Ganesa is an Indian God of wisdom, who has one tusk and an elephant head. He tells Merrick that if he had been born in India, he would have been worshipped. Merrick is stunned by the thought of how different his life would have been if he'd been born into another culture.
9. Which of the following is NOT one of the people Gull sees during his hallucination when he has his stroke?

Answer: Charles Bravo

Firstly he sees his idol, Nicholas Hawksmoor, and tells him that he knew HIS purpose, why hadn't he learned his own yet? Next, he sees his father, and tells him that he has become an old man, and has still not learnt his purpose. Finally, he sees his dear friend Hinton, who points over the hill. When Gull follows him, he sees the enormous vision of Jahbulon, standing like a mountain.
10. When Gull sees the vision of Jahbulon, what is held in Jahweh's left hand?

Answer: A pair of compasses

Jahweh is stood on the left of the picture, and is holding a pair of compasses and a set square. Baal is in the centre, facing Gull. Osiris is on the right of the picture, holding a whip.
11. Who told Queen Victoria about her grandson and Anne Crook?

Answer: Netley

John Netley is the coachman for Prince Eddy and Sickert, and is later William Gull's coachman during the Whitechapel murders. The Queen finds out about the scandal, and orders Gull to "silence" Anne Crook. He isn't ordered to kill Mary Kelly and her friends until later on.
12. What does Gull dislike being called by his coachman?

Answer: Your Lordship

Gull tells Netley to call him Sir William, or just Sir, he doesn't like being called Your Lordship. Netley doesn't understand William Gull's articulate speech and large vocabulary, and often thinks he is being complimented when, in fact, he is being mocked.
13. William Gull takes Theodore through to treat Anne Crook, telling him that she has an impairment of the thyroid gland, resulting in irregularities in which substance within the body?

Answer: Iodine

Anne, as we have seen, does not actually have anything wrong with her, but William Gull turns her into a shell of her former self, so that she is unable to reveal her secret. Anne has been locked inside the mental ward, and when we later meet her, she is almost unrecognisable.
14. Who does Anne Crook say that she was talking to when her husband was taken away?

Answer: James Hinton

She claims she was upstairs talking to James Hinton, when she was dragged out of the house. She then had to watch her husband get taken away, by men calling him "Your Highness". Anne is still confused as to what happened that day.
15. How many times do we actually get to see William Gull's face in this chapter dedicated to his life up to this point?

Answer: 5

We see him five times in the last page of the chapter. The rest of the chapter is told from his point of view, so we see what he sees. In the final pages, Anne Crook says he has a face that fills her with terror, after which we are finally shown his face. The rest of the page is from Anne's point of view, as she slowly slips into unconsciousness.
