A Real Class Act Trivia Quiz

Bob Hope Quotes

The definition of "a real class act" is someone who is very good at what they do, while remaining fair, polite and admirable. Bob Hope could certainly be described in those terms, especially regarding his lifelong devotion to entertaining the troops.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Once I bit my tongue and I tasted awful." Which Bob Hope film included this line?

Answer: The Road to Morocco

A favourite of the "Road" pictures for many, "The Road to Morocco" featured Bob, Bing Crosby, and Dorothy Lamour. The plot revolved around Bing selling Bob into slavery and both of the heroes wooing the Princess, played by Anthony Quinn, er I mean Dorothy Lamour.

In the opening scene Bob and Bing were adrift at sea, with little hope of rescue and running low on food and water. Bing flipped a coin to see which of them would be the survivor and who would make the great sacrifice. Bob protested by telling Bing that he would not like him, because he tasted really bad.
2. "I hate to interrupt, but your straitjacket is showing." Bob said this, but in which movie?

Answer: Where There's Life

The 1947 movie "Where There's Life" starred Bob with Signe Hasso and William Bendix. Bob played a DJ named Michael Valentine, who on the eve of his marriage found out that he was the new King of Barovia (a tiny country no one had heard about) and that he would have to deal with the country's enemies.

In this scene, the general (Signe Hasso) is trying to explain that Bob really is the King, but Bob thinks it's a gag and he replies to her that "her straitjacket is showing".
3. "I got a long life line. Well it was here a minute ago." In which of these does Bob utter these words?

Answer: My Favorite Blonde

"My Favorite Blonde" (1942) featured Bob, Madeleine Carroll, and Gale Sondergaard. Bob got mixed up with spies and murder while trying to deliver secret microfilm. In this scene, Miss Bentley (Carroll) who was a British spy, told Bob that the people following her were ruthless and would stop at nothing, including killing him. Bob replied nothing doing, he had "a long lifeline".

Then he looked at his hand and realized it was gone.
4. "That's kidnapping. You can't do that to me. Do you have a permit?" What movie featured a scene in which Bob asked about a kidnapping permit?

Answer: The Princess and the Pirate

"The Princess and the Pirate" (1944) starred Bob as 'The Great Sylvester', an actor, and Virginia Mayo as the Princess. The two were on the lam running from pirate Victor McLaglen and the villainous governor played by Walter Slezak. Walter Brennan co-starred and there was a surprising cameo at the end. Bob was kidnapped by the governor and he protested in vain, since most crimes were legal if one had a permit.
5. "You heard me Boy Scout. Go find your spear and sit on it." Bob was rather rude in which of these films?

Answer: Caught in the Draft

The 1941 movie "Caught in the Draft" starred Bob as a movie star who, while trying to to avoid the draft, accidentally enlisted. The movie co-starred Dorothy Lamour, Eddie Bracken and Lynne Overman. In this scene Dorothy Lamour and her father, the Colonel, visited a movie set where Bob was making a war movie. Bob mistook the Colonel for an extra and treated him in a demeaning manner.
6. "The girls call me Pilgrim, because every time I dance with one I make a little progress." Bob was trying to make a little time in which movie?

Answer: The Ghost Breakers

The 1940 film "The Ghost Breakers" starred Bob and Paulette Goddard. Bob and Paulette investigated an eerie Cuban house that she had inherited. In the scene, Bob was dancing with Paulette and trying to reassure her because she was frightened from threats on her life.
7. "You wouldn't be seen in those kind of places." Bob tried to be a gentleman in which movie?

Answer: The Road to Utopia

"The Road to Utopia" (1946) was the fourth in the series and featured Bob and Bing in Alaska looking for a lost gold mine and fighting over Dorothy. In this scene, Dorothy Lamour was pretending to romance Bob so she could get her hands on the map to the goldmine.

She suggested to Bob that perhaps they had met before, perhaps in his dreams. Bob replied that Dorothy wouldn't be seen in those kind of places.
8. "Brave men run in my family." Did Bob really mean what he said, in this movie?

Answer: The Paleface

The 1948 film "The Paleface" starred Bob as a dentist who went to the old west. There he hooked up with federal agent Jane Russell, who used Bob as a decoy while she searched for the people responsible for selling guns to the Indians. In this scene Bob had just been proclaimed a hero for killing 15 Indians (okay, it was 11) and he bragged about his heroics and that it was nothing because "brave men run in my family". "The Paleface" was remade in 1968 as "The Shakiest Gun in the West" and starred Don Knotts and Barbara Rhodes.
9. "Look, why don't you just run for Congress and let us alone, eh?" Bob was upset with someone, but in which film?

Answer: The Road to Rio

The fifth of the seven "Road" pictures, the 1947 film, "The Road to Rio" starred Bob, Bing and Dorothy Lamour. Bob and Bing were musicians who stowed away aboard a ship headed for Rio. They met Dorothy, who was being controlled by her evil 'aunt' (Gale Sondergaard) through hypnosis. One minute Dorothy was helping Bob and Bing and the next moment she was turning them in. Dorothy tried to apologize to Bob for turning them in to the captain, but he would have none of it and he told her off with his Congress remark. "Rio" also featured the Wiere Brothers, the Andrew Sisters and Jerry Colonna.
10. "Well corn my pone and chit my chitlins."

Answer: The Lemon Drop Kid

"The Lemon Drop Kid" (1951) starred Bob as a race track tout who owed big money to a gangster and must pay up or else. Marilyn Maxwell co-starred as Bob's girlfriend and the two of them introduced a new song titled "Silver Bells". In this scene, Bob pretended to be southern so he could appeal to a southern woman who had a load of cash. Bob convinced her to put a lot of money on a certain horse.

However that horse came in last and then Bob found out that the little southern belle was the girlfriend of the local crime boss. Whoops!
