Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Tess arrives at a rental house in Detroit to find it's double-booked. Why is she in the city in the first place?

Answer: For a job interview

It's a dark and rainy night in Detroit when Tess pulls up in front of her AirBNB rental home. Exhausted and eager to check in, she struggles to get the lockbox open and ultimately finds that the key's not inside. Worse, she calls the rental agent for helps and gets an answering machine. She heads to her car and prepares to leave, but a light turns on inside. It appears that someone's already there.

When the man inside opens the door he reveals that he's also renting the place. They're double-booked. Though the situation is a bit awkward, he introduces himself as Keith and invites her in. Both of them are nervous about each other, but as they try to figure out how to handle the problem, they get comfortable with the idea of sharing the property for the night -- she has a job interview in the morning and he's in town for a week scouting out real estate. Keith suggests the neighbourhood's not that great; Tess should stay. He takes the couch; she takes the bed.

That night, Tess awakens from her sleep to find her bedroom door having opened. Keith claims not to have opened it, however.
2. Returning to the house on her second day in Detroit, Tess is chased inside by which of these?

Answer: A homeless man

Tess wakes up late in the morning and heads to her interview, leaving the house in the daylight to find that she's in one of Detroit's more run-down neighbourhoods -- it's certainly nothing she could see in the dark when she drove up the night before. Nonetheless, she gets her things, heads out, and makes her way into the less derelict part of the city for her meeting. And she's fortunate; it goes off without a hitch and she's a shoe-in for the job. As Tess heads out, her interviewer asks where she's staying while she's in town. She says Brightmoor and her interviewer is a bit shocked. Tess shouldn't be there.

Returning to the AirBNB, Tess drops her car off in front of the property and prepares to head inside when a homeless man spots her down the road and pursues her, yelling at her not to go in the house. Tess believes the man is after her and calls the police, but the operator claims there aren't available units in the area. There's nothing she can do but wait.
3. There's a hidden corridor in the basement of the rental house. What's in the room just beyond it?

Answer: A camcorder

Fresh off the unnerving experience of being chased into the AirBNB, Tess enters the bathroom to find that the rental is out of toilet paper. A quick check of the upper floor leaves her with no choice but to look into the basement for supplies. She finds the toilet paper there in quick order, but when she heads back up the stairs, the door at the top closes, both locking her inside without her phone and with the door key in her pocket.

In looking for another solution, Tess finds something very odd -- a rope in a hole in the cement basement wall. Pulling it opens a secret door, and behind that is a dark hallway. Though she says no to the idea of checking it out, her curiosity gets the better of her. She shines a light inside and finds a long corridor leading to another room and, beyond that, a stairwell. What she finds in that room is disturbing -- a single dirty cot, a bucket, and a video camera set up inside. A bloody handprint is on the wall.

Keith returns to the AirBNB soon after Tess' discovery and while Tess suggests they leave immediately, both of them double check the mysterious room and Keith, letting curiosity get the better of him as well, proceeds down the stairwell. Tess follows after him when he doesn't return, using her phone for light as she heads down the stairs, and when she makes her way through the labyrinthine tunnels beneath the street, she finally locates him, injured and afraid, just in time for a horrifying woman to emerge from the darkness and crush Keith's head against a wall.
4. AJ heads to Detroit after he's fired from his job. Where does he live normally?

Answer: California

AJ Gilbride is riding down the Pacific Coast Highway -- convertible with the top down -- when he receives the call from his agent. As it turns out, there are allegations against him; women have come forward asserting that he was sexually aggressive during the filming of his recent television pilot. Naturally, the network is taking the accusation very seriously. They'll be making an investigation, but it's in everybody's best interest that he be fired from the show before it goes to series. He has a day before the story goes into "The Hollywood Reporter".

Over the next few days, and with no money coming in, AJ realizes he needs to sell off some of his assets to fight the allegations in court. His mortgage in Los Angeles is killing his funds, but he can sell off his rental homes in Michigan to buy himself some time. It's with that that he heads to Michigan to look over his properties. He visits the local agency in Detroit, grabs his house keys, and drives off to Brightmoor, parking right in front of Tess' car.
5. Inspecting his rental home, AJ finds the hidden corridor and stumbles upon Tess, but where?

Answer: In a pit

AJ ends up entering his rental unit to find that someone's left the basement door propped open. More interesting is that the rental appears to be in use; two peoples' belongings are inside. His rental manager assures him that no one's supposed to be staying at the house, but with no recent rental on the books, no one's been in to clean the place.

After a night out drinking with some old friends, AJ returns to the property and starts looking into his apparent squatters' belongings, eventually stumbling upon the hallway in the basement and making his own way into the tunnels. Grabbing a tape measure he starts determining how much extra property he might have to sell, but that's when he comes across something much more unnerving: a disgusting and dimly-lit room. And inside there's a TV playing. Something grabs his tape measure and pulls it down the corridor, and when it leaves his hands, he runs in the other direction, stumbling in the tunnel as his flashlight flickers out.

When the decrepit woman in the tunnels finally catches up to him, he falls into a pit and a cage closes overtop of him. He appears to be trapped, but he's not alone. Tess tells him to keep quiet.
6. Before AJ purchased the house, it was owned by a man known by what name?

Answer: Frank

When Brightmoor was still inhabited by Detroit suburbanites back in the 1980s, AJ's house was owned by an older gentleman named Frank. On one occasion, he stopped off at a local store to pick up some plastic sheets, relying on the shopkeeper to help him load up his shopping cart with baby essentials. Leaving the parking lot, however, he would spy someone of interest to him.

Instead of heading home with his belongings, he followed a vehicle back to its house, donned his plumber's outfit, and arrived at a woman's door pretending to need to check her water. He would end up unlocking her bathroom window before leaving.

Returning home, Frank would find out that his neighbour was leaving. In fact, most of the neighbourhood was starting to vacate their homes. With Detroit changing, it would only make sense. Frank would bring his things inside to the sound of screams in the basement.
7. Tess, having spent time in the tunnels, believes that her captor wants to be which of these things?

Answer: A mother

Tess tells AJ to be quiet because if they act out of line, the woman from the basement will get upset. In short order, a bottle of milk is lowered from the ceiling and presented to the two in the pit. While Tess drinks it, AJ refuses. It's enough to prompt the woman to get into the pit and coddle Tess... but prepare to punish AJ. As it seems, and as Tess claims, the woman just wants to take care of them like they're her babies. She grabs AJ and carries him off down the corridor back to her room, but in doing so, leaves the pit open for Tess to escape.

The woman tries to feed AJ herself, and that's enough of a distraction to allow Tess to get past the room and head back to the basement, but along the way she ends up hitting AJ's tape measure with her foot, alerting the woman to her presence. What's worse is that while Tess gets to the basement, the door at the top of the stairs is locked. Instead, she breaks through the basement window and starts to climb out, finding herself pulled free of the building in the nick of time by the homeless man who had, earlier, scared her back into the building. As she's dragged across the lawn, she watches as the woman grasps for her and then recedes into the darkness.
8. Tess manages to escape and grab the attention of the police. Do they believe her story?

Answer: No

Tess, realizing that AJ is still inside, tells the homeless man they need to help him but he refuses to go back to the house. He warns Tess that the woman inside comes around at night before he leaves, urging her to stay as far away as possible by that point.

AJ, meanwhile, dares to make an escape attempt when Tess grabs their captor's attention, and when he heads through the tunnels he finds a line along one of the walls attached to a bell at the end. Following this takes him through the corridors to a wooden door, and inside that he finds a trash-laden chamber adorned with discarded women's clothing. In the bed in the corner a man, Frank, starts coughing.

Tess walks to a gas station and has the attendant call the police. When they show up, they seem to brush off her accusation, claiming that since she has no ID and looks a mess, she's hard to believe, especially considering where she is. They humour Tess by bringing her back to the AirBNB, but since she has no keys, they won't simply break into the building. Instead, they leave. It's why she breaks back in.

In the basement, AJ tells Frank that he's going to get out of the tunnels and get them help. If he can get to the surface he can call the cops and bring this nightmare to an end. Before he leaves, however, AJ realizes that Frank might very well be responsible for everything that's happened. A series of home videos, labelled after womens' names and appearances, sits along the wall, and most of them contain footage from the room with the video camera. Within the minute, Frank reaches into his nightstand, pulls out a gun, and shoots himself in the head.
9. Once Tess is able to grab her car keys, she gets inside, hitting who when she has the opportunity?

Answer: Her captor

Breaking into the window of the AirBNB, Tess lets herself into the home, grabs her car keys, and prepares to drive off, but as she turns her vehicle around to make her escape, the woman from the basement emerges from the front door and stumbles after her. Tess drives forward instead, striking the woman and pinning her to the side of the house. It's not enough to kill her captor, who smashes the windshield with her fist before losing her energy.

AJ leaves Frank's room with the revolver from the nightstand, intending to use it when the woman comes back to recollect him. What happens, however, is that he shoots Tess instead, firing at her down the corridor as he makes his exit, not knowing she came back to get him. It's not a fatal wound, but he has to carry her out to the street. It's then that Tess discovers the woman escaped the wreckage. She's gone.

With Tess' car out of commission and AJ's keys still in the house, the two decide to take their chances on foot instead, especially since Tess knows the homeless man lives in the neighbourhood. They find him in short order to wait until sunrise and he fills them in on the sordid tale of incest and rape that surrounds the property. He reassures them that they're safe; in fifteen years she's never come to his encampment.

That's when the woman bursts in through the hole in the wall, grabs the man, and tears his arm off.
10. The movie culminates in a battle atop which of these?

Answer: Water tower

Tess and AJ flee into the night and up the stairs of the nearby water tower in an effort to escape their captor but as AJ reaches the top and grabs for the gun in his waistband, he fumbles with it and drops it over the edge, leaving the two of them with no weapons to defend themselves. AJ makes the choice, then, to save himself by using Tess to slow down their pursuer, and to do that he grabs Tess by the hair and tosses her over the side of the structure. Sure enough, the woman leaps off after her, shielding her from the fall.

As AJ heads to the street he picks up the gun and checks on the bodies, finding that Tess has survived the drop. AJ tries to justify his decision, claiming there was nothing he could do and, besides, she was slipping anyways. He panicked. While he grabs for Tess, the woman brings herself to her feet and grabs AJ by the neck, moving her thumbs up to his eyes and tearing his head apart.

As the woman turns around to inspect Tess and check that her adopted baby is alright, Tess grabs the gun from the ground and puts it to the woman's head. As the woman kisses her hand and puts it to Tess' forehead, Tess fires the weapon.

As the sun rises, Tess gets to her feet and stumbles away.
