Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

The films selected come from a wide range of sports with, perhaps unsurprisingly, baseball and American football featuring prominently;

"Bad News Bears" (1976) is a story about a team of underdogs in little league baseball in California, with an alcoholic coach who builds a team that beats the odds.

"A League of Their Own" (1992) is set in a women's baseball league during World War II, highlighting the struggles and triumphs of female athletes who step up to keep baseball alive while male players are at war.

"Field of Dreams" (1989) stars Kevin Costner as a farmer who hears a voice that tells him to build a baseball field on his land. When it is built, ghosts of former players come to play.

"Bull Durham" (1988) also stars Costner, with Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon. Set in minor league baseball it tells the story of the love triangle between veteran Costner, the rookie Robbins who he is mentoring and Sarandon's baseball groupie.

In "Any Given Sunday" (1999), a veteran American football coach struggles with conflicts with his players, coaches and the team's owners while striving to secure a playoff spot.

"Friday Night Lights" (2004) is based on a true story. It follows the coach and players of a high school football team as they deal with the pressures of an entire town's expectations.

"The Longest Yard" (1974) stars Burt Reynolds as a former NFL player turned prisoner, who leads a team of inmates in a football game against the guards. It was remade in 2005 with Adam Sandler in the Reynolds role.

"Lagaan" (2001) is set in India during the British colonial period. When the British try to double taxes on a village in Northern India, the village challenges the British to a game of cricket to decide whether the new tax is imposed or not.

"When Saturday Comes" (1996) stars Sean Bean as a hard drinking, working-class Yorkshireman who tries to achieve his dream of becoming a professional footballer with his beloved Sheffield United, despite skepticism from everyone around him.

"This Sporting Life" (1963) stars Richard Harris as a coal miner turned rugby league player, grappling with personal and professional turmoil and the darker side of being a well-known sportsman.

"Wimbledon" (2004) is a romantic comedy that sees a fading tennis star rekindle his passion for the sport and his love life when he meets a talented, young American player.

"King Richard" (2021) is based on the real life story of Richard Williams and his determination to coach his daughters, Venus and Serena, to become tennis superstars. Will Smith won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of the title character.

In "Happy Gilmore" (1996), an unsuccessful ice hockey player unexpectedly discovers he has a talent, though little of the etiquette, for golf as he tries to earn enough money to save his grandmother's house from repossession by the IRS.

"Tin Cup" (1996) is an altogether different type of golf movie, as Kevin Costner's failed golfer tries to impress a rival's girlfriend by qualifying for the US Open.

"Hoosiers" (1986) is a movie about a small-town high school basketball team that makes it all the way to the state championship, against the odds. It stars Gene Hackman and Dennis Hopper, who received a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the Academy Awards for his portrayal of the drunken father to one of the players.

Of the wrong answers; "Rounders" is about poker rather than the ball sport; "The Whole Ten Yards" (2004) is a sequel to "The Whole Nine Yards" (2000) and is a crime comedy about a man who gets caught up in the world of a contract killer; "The Golden Bowl" (2000) is a romantic drama based on a Henry James novel and starring Uma Thurman and Kate Beckinsale; "Ball of Fire" (1941) is a screwball comedy about a nightclub dancer who hides out with a group of stuffy college professors; and "The Boys from Brazil" (1978) is a drama about a Nazi hunter who uncovers a group of Nazi emigres who are plotting the return of Hitler via cloning.
