Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When did the action of the film take place?

Answer: June 1968

The action took place in early June 1968, culminating in the shooting of Robert Kennedy shortly after midnight on 5th June 1968. Kennedy died the following day, but five others who were injured in the shooting survived.
2. Which hotel was featured in the film?

Answer: Ambassador

The Ambassador Hotel, on Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles, was opened in 1921 and instantly became a mecca for the rich and famous of Hollywood. It was used for Academy Awards presentations for many years and has also been as a location for several films.

However, more than anything else, it is associated with the assassination of Robert Kennedy, and after this it gradually fell out of favour. It finally closed in 1989 and was demolished in 2005. Interestingly, while Emilio was fighting to keep the hotel from being demolished so that he could shoot his film, his father, Martin Sheen, was lobbying to have it demolished, at the request of Bobby's widow, Ethel.
3. Anthony Hopkins played a retired employee of the hotel. What had his job been?

Answer: Doorman

Hopkins, as John Casey, reminisced to his friend Nelson (Harry Belafonte) about the early days of the hotel when he had greeted many famous stars as well as Presidents and politicians. One of the touching moments of the film was when he happened to be at the door when Robert Kennedy arrived and he was able to greet him and welcome him to the hotel, just as he had done to so many others in the past.
4. What was the job of Angela, who was having an affair with Paul Ebbers, the hotel manager?

Answer: Switchboard operator

Angela (Heather Graham) thought that an affair with the manager would help her to get ahead in the world. On the advice from her friend about the danger of being involved with a married man, she ended the affair. However, Paul (William H. Macy) then had to face his wife who had discovered that he was having an affair.
5. What colour shoes had Samantha forgotten to pack?

Answer: Black

Samantha (Helen Hunt) was devastated when she discovered that she had not brought the right shoes to go with her dress. Married to Jack, an older, rich and depressive stockbroker (Martin Sheen), she was obsessed with her appearance and possessions. The couple moved closer together after Jack tried to convince her that there was more to life than material possessions.
6. What was Virginia Fallon's main problem?

Answer: Alcoholism

Virginia Fallon (Demi Moore) was the aging lounge singer who was booked to introduce Senator Kennedy at the California Primary party. However, her drinking was driving away her husband Tim (Emilio Estevez).
7. Jose had tickets for an important baseball game. Who did he give the tickets to?

Answer: Edward

Latino kitchen worker Jose (Freddy Rodriguez) had tickets for an important Dodgers game, but was then told he had to work a double shift. He gave the tickets to Edward Robinson, the negro sous-chef (Laurence Fishburne) who had previously talked wisely to the kitchen staff about race relations in America.
8. Why was Diane marrying William?

Answer: To save him from the Vietnam draft.

Diane (Lindsay Lohan) had agreed to marry William (Elijah Wood) so that he would not have to go to Vietnam. William had doubts as to whether they were doing the right thing, but it seemed that the two young people were falling in love.
9. What nationality was the reporter who was desperate for an interview with Robert Kennedy?

Answer: Czech

Lenka Janacek (Svetlana Metkina) was a Czech reporter who asked Kennedy's aide Wade (Joshua Jackson) for five minutes with the Senator. He refused on the grounds that she was representing a Communist state, but eventually relented and as a result Lenka was one of those present at the assassination.
10. Emilio Estevez both wrote and directed "Bobby".

Answer: True

Emilio believed that he was destined to make the film ever since he was taken as a six year old child to the Ambassador Hotel by his father, Martin Sheen, who was one of Robert Kennedy's supporters. His father told him "This is where the music died". Emilio believes that Robert's assassination ended the ideals and optimism of an earlier generation and led to the modern atmosphere of cynicism and apathy.
