In the movie "The French Connection" (1971) there was a shoot out between drug smugglers and law enforcement. In the confusion Popeye Doyle (Gene Hackman) accidentally shot an FBI agent, or was it not an accident? The movie was a fictionalized version of a real case involving New York City police. Gene Hackman won the Oscar for Best Actor for this movie.

2. What kitchen item was used as a surname for the characters Ma and Pa in a series of comedy films in the 1940s and 1950s?

The first appearance of the Ma and Pa Kettle characters was as supporting roles in the 1947 movie 'The Egg And I'. They were portrayed by Marjorie Main and Percy Kilbride respectively. The success of this film led to the Ma and Pa characters being further developed and nine more films were made for the franchise between 1949 and 1957.

The ninth film in the series, 'The Kettles in the Ozarks' (1956), did not feature Pa Kettle as Percy Kilbride had retired. The tenth and final film, 'The Kettles on Old MacDonald's Farm' (1957), saw Parker Fenelley reprise the role of Pa Kettle.

Nick Park began work on "A Grand Day Out" in 1982 at the National Film and Television School in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, England. The film was one of the requirements for graduation in his programme of study. He continued to work on the movie in 1985 as an employee of Aardman Animations. Released in 1989, it tells the story of how Wallace, an inventor, and his dog Gromit run out of cheese and build a rocket to go to the Moon to fetch some.

The short (23 minute) film was nominated for the 1991 Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film but Park lost to himself, in that another of his films, "Creature Comforts," won the award.
