Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's jump right in! Who is the Giver?

Answer: The former Receiver of Memory

The Receiver of Memory is a unique position in the community. The position holds all memories and knowledge of what existed before the community and uses this information to advise the community's elders.

Since only one person can hold this position at a time, once Jonas is named the new Receiver of Memory, the previous Receiver of Memory, played by Jeff Bridges, becomes the Giver.

In the book, Jonas is selected for this position during the Ceremony of 12; however, the characters were aged to 16 for the purposes of the film.
2. In the book, Jonas's friend Asher is assigned to be the Assistant Director of Recreation. What career assignment does Asher receive in the film?

Answer: Drone Pilot

The film creates additional conflict by having Asher assigned as the drone pilot who is later asked to use his skills to find and kill Jonas.

Fiona also receives a different assignment in the movie than in the book. In the book she is assigned as a caregiver of the old, but in the movie she works in the nursery. However both jobs would require that she become familiar with how to "release" members of the community.
3. All citizens of the community who have reached puberty are required to take daily injections. What fruit does Jonas use to trick the sensor so that he can skip his injections?

Answer: Apple

Members of the community begin taking medication once they reach puberty to limit their "stirrings" and control their emotions. In the book, the medication is in the form of pills taken every morning. The film included extensive technology in order to modernized the story, including use of an electronic device to deliver daily medication through injections. Jonas explains to Fiona that he holds an apple up to the device in order to trick the sensor into believing that he has received his daily injection.
4. Before Jonas was selected as the Receiver of Memory, the Giver had attempted to train a girl named Rosemary for the position. What skill does Rosemary learn from the memories she received?

Answer: Playing piano

Thanks to some of the technology upgrades in the movie, Jonas is able to first hear music when he discovers the Giver watching a a hologram of Rosemary, played by Taylor Swift. In the hologram she tries to teach the Giver to play the piano, which she had learned from memories.

In the book, Jonas doesn't hear music until he leaves the community. The Giver in the book loses memories once he shares them. Knowing how important Rosemary was to the Giver, Jonas wants him to keep those memories for himself so refuses to accept memories of music.
5. Jonas's sister gives her comfort object, a stuffed animal called Hippo, to Gabe. After receiving memories of this animal being killed by poachers, Jonas realizes that it is not actually a hippopotamus. What type of animal is it really?

Answer: Elephant

There are no animals in the community. The first time that Jonas sees an elephant is in the memories he receives from the Giver of a poacher killing an elephant for its tusks.

In the film, no one in Jonas's family knows the difference between an elephant and a hippopotamus. But in the book, the animals are called by their correct names. Jonas's sister turns in her comfort object in the book after the Ceremony of Eight, so Gabe receives his own comfort object, a stuffed hippo.
6. What physical characteristic do the Giver, Jonas and Gabe share as a sign of their capacity to "see beyond"?

Answer: Birthmark

After recognizing the birthmark on Gabe's wrist as an indication that he may one day have the ability to see beyond, Jonas begins to share some of his memories with Gabe.

In the book, the capacity to see beyond is signaled by the characters having lighter eyes that the rest of the community.
7. The relationship between Jonas and Gabe is an important storyline in both the book and the movie. Why does Jonas take Gabe when he leaves the community?

Answer: He wants to save Gabe from being released.

Jonas's father is a nurturer of new children and brings home an undersized infant, Gabe, in the evenings in an effort to help him catch up to his peers. Unfortunately, the extra attention does not help Gabe to reach the community's physical and developmental milestones so he is scheduled to be released.

In the book, Jonas leaves the community with Gabe after hearing that he was scheduled to be released. However, in the film, Jonas had already been developing plans to leave and simply expedites his timeline when he finds out about Gabe's release.
8. Jonas learns the truth of what it means to be released from the community by watching his father release a newborn child. Why is the child released?

Answer: The child is the smaller of a pair of twins

Due to the fact that the community attempts to eliminate differences between people in an effort to create a peaceful and equitable society, twins are not allowed as members of the community.

In the book, Jonas's sister imagines children running into their twins on field trips to other communities, but she is assured that is not possible.
9. Rosemary decides that she could not fulfill the role of Receiver of Memory, so she asks to be released from the community. What does it mean when a person is released from their community?

Answer: The person is killed.

In the film, the Giver explains to Jonas that even those who are responsible to release people from the community, like Jonas's father, don't truly understand what they are doing or what it means to die.

In the book, it is made clear that as a Receiver of Memory, Rosemary does understand what it means to be released but she is unable to live with the painful memories of loss, poverty and anguish that she was asked to keep.
10. At the end of the film, Jonas knows that he is finally safe when he finds the site of the first memory he had received from the Giver. What is at this location?

Answer: A home

Earlier in the movie, the Giver explains to Jonas that a home is different from the dwellings they have in their communities. When Jonas comes upon the cabin in the woods, he knows the Giver had steered him to the home he saw in the memories.

Many readers of the book initially believed that Jonas died at the end. However, Lois Lowry brought the character of Jonas back in later books as part of a loose quartet of books.
