Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the man Jet Li portrays?

Answer: Huo Yuanjia

Huo Yuanjia has heroic status and is a legend. He has had many myths made of his life, making it hard to tell what's true. For this, even Jet Li's portrayal of Huo Yuanjia in the movie is loosely based on his life. Even though Jet Li plays Wong Fei Hung and Fong Sai Yuk in several movies, he doesn't play him this time around. In the movie, Nong Jinsun is Huo Yuanjia's childhood friend.
2. In the movie, it is mentioned that Yuanjia has an illness. What is it?

Answer: Asthma

In the movie he suffers from asthma, but in real life, he suffered from jaundice, this being the reason his father wouldn't teach him kung-fu. In the movie Yuanjia tells his mother that practicing kung-fu has cured him of his asthma.
3. What's the name of the town Yuanjia was born in?

Answer: Tianjin

Tianjin is one of China's largest urban areas, after Shanghai and Bejing, with a population reaching 10 million. Hebei is actually a province surrounding Tianjin and Beijing from the mainland.
4. After Yuanjia has fought everyone that had challenged him in Tianjin, a man passes by Yuanjia in Jinsun's restaurant and mentions that "he couldn't defeat Master Chin". How is this person associated with Chin?

Answer: Godson

The man's name is never told, only that he is Chin's godson. This man was seen a couple of times before, as an on-looker to Yuanjia's fights.
5. What does Yuanjia do after discovering why Chin beat up one of his students?

Answer: Begins to aimlessly wander China

After celebrating his victory over Chin and becoming the best in Tianjin, Yuanjia walks down the road the next morning, where Jinsun tells him Chin died two hours ago. He then stumbles to the fighting platform where he throws up. He then walks to his estate and sits down, but then discovers his mother and daughter killed. Looking for revenge, Yuanjia goes to Chin's godson, ready to kill him. Chin's godson tells Yuanjia he killed them, apologizes to his own family and then slits his own throat. Yuanjia leaves and then his students force the one to explain why he got beat up. Yuanjia, being mortified, begins to wonder aimlessly.
6. What do the kids in the village, where Yuanjia recovers, call him?

Answer: Ox

The kids tell him they nick-named him ox because he sleeps a lot. The kids first start calling him that and then it just caught on as his name there. The whole time Yuanjia stays in the village he never tells anyone his name, except Yueci, whom he told before he left to go back to Tianjin.
7. What is Yueci's permanent condition?

Answer: Blind

When Yueci talks to Yuanjia for the first few times, when he wasn't speaking, she says she started going blind when she was thirteen years old. She goes on to mention how her grandmother helped her from being afraid.
8. Through financial donations, who supported the Huo family estate when Yuanjia left?

Answer: Jinsun

After Yuanjia returns to Tianjin he finds out through Lai foo, his fathers aid, that Jinsun had been supporting his estate through donations. It's never clearly put as to why Jinsun made the donations.
9. When Yuanjia returns to Tianjin, he reads in the newspaper about a man who's challenging the "Sick Men of the East" to a one on one fight. What name does this man use?

Answer: Hercules O'Brien

Hercules O'Brian, in both real life and in the movie, was a very tall and powerful person who had mocked China and defeated many kung-fu practitioners of many different styles. Yuanjia beats O'Brian with relative ease and, for the movie, inevitably saves his life from his own undoing.

In real life, Yuanjia didn't only fight a man named Hercules O'Brien, he also fought and defeated a Russian wrestler, who as well, challenged the "Sick Men of the East".
10. In the movie, how does Yuanjia die?

Answer: Poisoned Tea

In the movie, Yuanjia is poisoned by the Western officials for no reason other than hatred. Yuanjia had challenged them and made a spectacle of himself and helped inspire the uniting of China in order to gain strength to fight against the invading Western forces.

As for Yuanjia's actual death, the details are a bit speculated. Some say the Japanese poisoned him, others that it was a mistake in the herbs caused by his new doctor. There are some who believe it actually was the Westerners. Even the date of his death is debated, however, it is known he died at the age of 42.
