Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. While Luke and Anakin's childhoods were markedly different, one commonality was the planet they both grew up on. On which desert planet was Anakin born and Luke taken to shortly after his birth?

Answer: Tatooine

Born to Shmi Skywalker, Anakin grew up as a slave in Mos Espa, a spaceport and settlement on Tatooine. Anakin and his mother were owned by Watto, a Toydarian junk dealer. Luke grew up with his uncle, Owen Lars, on a moisture farm near Mos Eisley, yet another spaceport on Tatooine.
2. Both Luke and Anakin were much older than the typical Jedi padawan. Luke, obviously, was an adult when he began learning of the force, but Anakin was only nine years old. Which member the Jedi Council informed us that nine was, in fact, too old to begin training as a Jedi?

Answer: Mace Windu

Qui Gon Jinn believed Anakin was the chosen one and destined to bring balance to the force. When Qui Gon and Obi Wan went before the Jedi Council to report on their mission to broker peace between Naboo and the Trade Federation, Qui Gon expressed his wishes to take on Anakin as a padawan. Speaking for the council, Mace Windu denied the request. Luke spent the first nineteen years of his life knowing little of the force or the ways of the Jedi. Only when he met Obi Wan Kenobi did he learn of his Jedi heritage.
3. Anakin and Luke first learned the ways of the force at the hands of the same master. Who was this teacher?

Answer: Obi Wan Kenobi

Qui Gon Jinn intended to train Anakin in defiance of the council. As Qui Gon drew his last breath, having been cut down by Darth Maul, Obi Wan promised to train Anakin. Later, Yoda, again speaking for the Jedi Council, gives Obi Wan approval to train Anakin. Luke was initially hesitant to follow Obi Wan on his mission to Alderaan, but relented when his aunt and uncle were killed. Obi Wan began training him while on the Millennium Falcon.
4. Every Jedi needs a lightsaber and Anakin and Luke were no exception. While both wielded multiple lightsabers, their first were both what color?

Answer: Blue

Anakin's first lightsaber, made from a blue kyber crystal, was destroyed in the droid factory on Geonosis. His second lightsaber was also blue and was recovered by Obi Wan after his duel with Anakin on Mustafar. When Luke met Obi Wan for the first time, he was given this same blue lightsaber which he used through the first two movies.
5. Luke and Anakin were both heralded as gifted pilots. Amazingly, both took part in combat missions that resulted the destructions of large space stations. Anakin took out the droid control ship in his borrowed Naboo N-1 Starfighter. What spacecraft did Luke use to destroy the first Death Star?

Answer: X-wing

Anakin's skills were developed in pod races on Tatooine. His first ever victory would be his last as he was freed and placed in Qui Gon's custody. During the droid battle on Naboo, Anakin hid in an N-1 starfighter which he accidentally powered up and flew to the droid control ship. Luke learned to fly in the T-16, a skill he hoped would gain him entrance into the imperial academy. Later, in the assault on the Death Star, Luke flew in a squadron of X-wing starfighters, using the callsign Red Five.
6. Though Anakin and Luke were gifted fighters, both found themselves outmatched by more skilled and powerful foes to whom they both lost a hand. Did Anakin and Luke both lose the same hand?

Answer: Yes

While dueling with Count Dooku in "The Attack of the Clones", Anakin's right arm was severed below the elbow. It was later replaced with a prosthesis. At the conclusion of "The Empire Strikes Back", Anakin, having become Darth Vader, overpowered Luke and cut his right hand off at the wrist.
7. Loss of a parent or parental figure is yet another common bond between Anakin and Luke. Anakin's mother Shmi was abducted by Tusken Raiders and later died due to injuries sustained in captivity. Owen and Beru Lars were killed while Luke was attempting to recover R2D2. Who or what were responsible for their deaths?

Answer: Stormtroopers

When Anakin attempted to rescue his mother from captivity, she died in his arms. Her death became the impetus of Anakin's descent to the dark side, as he brutally murdered the entire village of Tusken Raiders responsible.

Luke, on the other hand, realized after the death of Owen and Beru that Tatooine held nothing for him anymore. This realization signaled his ascent to the light side and his decision to learn the ways of the force. When he found the disabled Sandcrawler and dead Jawas, he initially suspected that Tuscan Raiders were responsible. Obi Wan corrected him saying the marching pattern and blast marks indicated the presence of Stormtroopers. Luke then realized that the Stormtroopers would have been led back to his home where they slaughtered his aunt and uncle.
8. The parental similarities don't end there. Neither Anakin nor Luke had any contact growing up with a birth father. Luke's presence was, of course, concealed from Anakin/Darth Vader and Luke's true parentage was concealed from Anakin as well. Anakin's paternity was more unclear. How did Anakin's mother respond when asked, by Qui Gon, who the boy's father was?

Answer: There was no father.

Qui Gon marveled at Anakin's Jedi-like reflexes and lamented that Anakin had not been discovered sooner. Shmi told Qui Gon that, "I carried him, I gave birth, I raised him, I can't explain what happened." Qui Gon took Shmi's response to mean that Anakin was conceived by the force.

The question of Anakin's paternity was never fully answered in the movies. Recently, "Star Wars" comic books revealed the Anakin's conception was a result of experimentation between Sheev Palpatine (Darth Sidious) and Darth Plagueis.
9. As Anakin and Luke matured in the force, both became mentors to younger apprentices. Which of the following was not a Jedi apprentice of either Luke or Anakin?

Answer: Padme

We first met Ahsoka Tano, Anakin's padawan, in "Star Wars: The Clone Wars", an animated "Star Wars" movie that premiered in 2008 and spawned a Cartoon Network series of the same name later that year. Some time after the events of "The Return of the Jedi" we learned that Han and Leia had a son they named Ben. Luke began training Ben in the ways of the force until he was seduced by the Dark Side and went on to become Kylo Ren. Rey became Luke's apprentice for a short time on the planet of Ahch-To, before she left again to help her friends who were in danger.
10. Finally, and the most obvious of the similarities, both Anakin and Luke shared the same last name of Skywalker. This wasn't always the case, however. In early drafts of the screenplay, Luke's last name was Starkiller. George Lucas felt the name might conjure up negative feelings so he replaced it. The Starkiller name, however, does show up somewhere in the three theatrical trilogies. Where?

Answer: A military base

The First Order unleashed Starkiller Base in "The Force Awakens" as a weapon capable of destroying entire star systems. Supreme Leader Snoke authorized General Hux to use Starkiller Base to destroy the New Republic capital. With few allies left, General Leia and the resistance make the destruction of Starkiller Base priority one. Led by Poe, Han, Finn, and Rey, a subsequent mission, to destroy the base was successful.
