Vera tries to whisper it to her. Someone in the crowd hears and after a bit more struggling from Mame, the man in the crowd shouts out "Ill fate it!" The whole crowd bursts out laughing, and the ending of the play is ruined. Vera and Mame fight and Mame loses her job.

This however turns out to be a good thing because the man who is buying the skates, the order she can't write up, comes to her house to apologize, and they fall in love and later get married.
