Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This quiz has to begin with "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" (2011) with its four jobs in the title. It is based on the John le Carré novel of the same title and stars which actor who subsequently won the Oscar for Best Actor for his performance portraying Winston Churchill?

Answer: Gary Oldman

The film is a Cold War spy thriller about the hunt for a Soviet double agent high up in the British secret service. Other stars include Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, John Hurt and Benedict Cumberbatch. It was critically acclaimed (83% positive on Rotten Tomatoes), commercially successful (over $80 million gross) and received three Oscar nominations.

Oldman began his acting career on the stage in 1979. He rose to prominence in film in 1986 playing Sid Vicious in "Sid and Nancy" (1986). He won the Oscar for Best Actor for his role as Winston Churchill in "Darkest Hour" (2017) and was nominated for his performances in "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" and "Mank" (2020).

John Lithgow played Churchill in the Netflix series "The Crown".

Brian Cox played Churchill in "Churchill" (2017).

Robert Hardy played Churchill in several productions, most notably the British television series "Winston Churchill: The Wilderness Years".
2. "Taxi Driver" (1976) featured the second legendary pairing of Robert De Niro with director Martin Scorsese. Which actress, whose career began as a child model, received an Oscar nomination for playing the role of the girl the taxi driver attempts to rescue from prostitution?

Answer: Jodie Foster

Despite controversies related to the film including its level of violence, the casting of Foster, who was just 12 years-old at the time, and its role in John Hinckley Jr.'s attempt on the life of Ronald Reagan, the film has remained critically acclaimed and popular. It was voted as a top 100 film of all time by the American Film Institute (AFI) on their 1998 and 2007 surveys.

Jodie Foster first worked as a child model, appeared in several Disney movies and began dramatic film work in Martin Scorsese's "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore" (1974). After attending Yale University, Foster transitioned into mature leading roles earning Oscars for Best Actress for "The Accused" (1988) and "The Silence of the Lambs" (1991). She began directing films with "Little Man Tate" (1991) and founded her own production company in 1992. The first movie made by her production company and in which Foster starred was "Nell" (1994).
3. The original "Blade Runner" (1982) stars Harrison Ford in this Ridley Scott science fiction classic. In the movie, what is a blade runner?

Answer: A policeman who hunts down fugitive androids

The term "blade runner" originated in a novel called "The Bladerunner" (1974) by Alan Nourse. In the novel, the term "blade runner" refers to a smuggler of medical supplies, e.g. scalpels. Ridley Scott liked the title and rights to it were obtained. However, the story in the movie is based on Philip K. Dick's novel "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" (1968). The meaning of "blade runner" was changed to apply to policemen in a special task force whose job is to hunt down fugitive androids who have illegally returned to Earth.

The film initially met with mixed reviews but continued to gain popularity and was one of the first movies released on DVD. The editing was manipulated by studio executives resulting in the existence of seven versions. In 2007, "The Final Cut" was released. It is a 25th-anniversary digitally remastered version which is the only version over which Scott retained artistic control.
4. "The Stunt Man" (1980) is a delightful farcical film about a fugitive who wanders onto a remote movie set and becomes part of the cast as a stunt man. He is manipulated into performances by a maniacal director played by which veteran actor who earned one of his eight Oscar nominations for Best Actor for his performance?

Answer: Peter O'Toole

"The Stunt Man" also stars Steve Railsback and Barbara Hershey, and was directed by Richard Rush. It is not only very enjoyable but very interesting in its construction. Since we are often seeing the action through the perspective of the stunt man, who is being manipulated by the director to achieve the desired performance, we can't tell when we as an audience are also being manipulated. Furthermore, we are shown some of the "tricks of the trade" for creating movie scenes.

O'Toole began his career as a Shakespearean actor. He began acting in films in 1959 and gained international recognition for his performance in the titular role of "Lawrence of Arabia" (1962) which earned him his first of eight Oscar nominations for Best Actor. Unfortunately, he did not win for any of these performances but in 2002 the Academy honored him with an Academy Honorary Award for his entire body of work and contributions to cinema.
5. "The Exorcist" (1973) is a very influential and controversial horror film. It stars Max von Sydow as a Catholic priest, Linda Blair as the possessed child and which actress, who eventually earned the acting "Triple Crown", as the child's mother?

Answer: Ellen Burstyn

All the controversies revolving around "The Exorcist" with its daring special effects and religious themes likely added to it's popularity. It was the highest-grossing Christmas week release until "Titanic" (1997).

Ellen Burstyn started her acting career on Broadway in 1957. Her breakout film role was in "The Last Picture Show" (1971) for which she earned an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She was nominated for the Oscar for Best Actress for "The Exorcist" and won the award for "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore" (1974). She has also won Tony and Primetime Emmy Awards which, along with the Oscar, constitutes the Triple Crown of Acting.
6. In the biographical musical film "Coal Miner's Daughter" (1980), Sissy Spacek plays the titular role in a performance for which she won the Oscar for Best Actress. Which country music legend does she portray in the film?

Answer: Loretta Lynn

The film follows Loretta Lynn's life from her early teen years in a poor family and getting married at age 15 to her rise as one of the most influential country singers and songwriters. Lynn herself chose Spacek to portray her despite being unfamiliar with her previous work.

The film's soundtrack featured Lynn's hit singles which were all sung by Spacek. The movie was both critically and commercially successful becoming the seventh highest-grossing film of 1980 and receiving seven nominations at the 53rd Academy Awards, including for Best Picture.
7. "The Accountant" (2016) features Ben Affleck in the titular role as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) who audits the books of criminal organizations which suspect embezzlement of their funds. The Accountant has which of the following conditions that affects his capabilities?

Answer: Autism Spectrum

In "The Accountant", the lead character, Christian Wolff, utilizes his idiosyncratic abilities to review more than a decade of a company's financial records in one night and finds over $60 million has been embezzled. Hitmen then become involved. In order to help him cope with his reactions to stimuli, Chris's father has trained him in martial arts so that he is perhaps the first "action-accountant" in cinema and he can take on the hitmen. Affleck's performance and the action sequences featuring pencak silat, an Indonesian martial art, were critically praised.

The film was commercially very successful as it was the top-rented film of 2017 for both disc and digital. The excellent trailer features the appropriate song "Everything In Its Right Place" by my favorite group, Radiohead.
8. I hope you're not disappointed to find out that "The Mechanic" (1972) is not actually about a mechanic. Instead, it euphemistically describes a hitman. The titular role is played by which famous tough-guy?

Answer: Charles Bronson

This film is about a hitman and his relationship with an apprentice. What could go wrong? It was successful enough that a remake was released in 2011 and a sequel called "Mechanic: Resurrection" (2016) made.

Bronson began studying acting after his service in the US Air Force during World War II. His first leading movie role was in "Machine-Gun Kelly" (1958). He then got substantial co-starring roles in major movies such as "The Magnificent Seven" (1960) and "The Dirty Dozen" (1967). He began a collaboration with director Michael Winner in 1972 with "The Mechanic" being their second pairing. With this, he became the world's number one box office star, commanding $1 million per film.
9. "The Aviator" (2004) was directed by Martin Scorsese and features Leonardo DiCaprio in the titular role. The film is an epic biographical drama about the life of which pioneering aviator?

Answer: Howard Hughes

The film focuses on Hughes' life from 1927-47. He starts in the film industry including directing and producing. He then gets into aviation developing and flying planes including breaking the world record for airspeed in 1935 and then the record for traveling around the world in 1938.

"The Aviator" has an outstanding cast including Cate Blanchett who plays Katharine Hepburn and won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. The film was very successful commercially and critically earning 11 Oscar nominations and winning five.
10. The full title of "Anchorman" (2004), featuring Will Ferrell in the titular role, is "Anchorman: The Legend of _______". What is the name of the Anchorman that fills in the blank?

Answer: Ron Burgundy

In addition to Ferrell, "Anchorman" stars Christina Applegate, Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, David Koechner and Fred Willard. The plot involves Ron Burgundy being the anchorman for the leading local news program in San Diego but he starts having competition from a co-anchor the station hires played by Applegate. The film was commercially successful and spawned two sequels.
