Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What process or procedure were the main characters of "The Awful Truth" (1937) going through in the movie?

Answer: Divorce

In this romantic comedy, Cary Grant and Irene Dunne star as the couple in the midst of a divorce that quite probably should remain together. Each tries to break up the other's new romance, and they squabble over who gets custody of their dog, with witty dialogue flying fast and furious. Leo McCarey directs, and the cast also includes Ralph Bellamy, as Dunne's new beau.

The photo is of a statue atop a courthouse, holding the scales of justice, and is meant to steer players in the direction of court proceedings, in this case, divorce.
2. In "The True Story of Jesse James" (1957), Robert Wagner played Jesse, but who played his brother Frank?

Answer: Jeffrey Hunter

This version of the life story of Jesse and Frank James isn't any more "true" than most movies about the brothers, and covers most of the same ground as earlier (and later) films. They ride with Quantrill, team up with the Younger brothers, fail in Northfield, Minnesota - and Jesse eventually dies at the hands of a former ally.

Jeffrey Hunter's film history includes "Belles on Their Toes" (1952), "The Searchers" (1956) and "The Longest Day" (1962) amongst many others. Of the incorrect choices, Hale and Overton appeared in "The True Story of Jesse James", as Cole Younger and Major Rufus Cobb respectively. John Deere is a company that makes farm machinery and suchlike.

The young deer in the photo is happily unlikely to have fallen prey to a hunter, given its location in a protected property. The photo might, however, help players to the correct answer.
3. John Wayne won an Oscar for his portrayal of Rooster Cogburn in the 1969 version of "True Grit", directed by Henry Hathaway. Who received a nomination for playing the same role in the Coen Brothers' 2010 version of the movie?

Answer: Jeff Bridges

Both versions of "True Grit" involve a young girl named Mattie Ross (Kim Darby, Hailee Steinfeld) hiring US Marshal Cogburn (Wayne, Bridges) to hunt down the killer of her father. They are accompanied by a young man named La Boeuf (Glen Campbell, Matt Damon), who is a Texas Ranger. Action ensues.

Bridges lost out that year to Colin Firth in "The King's Speech", having been victorious a year earlier for his performance in "Crazy Heart" (2009). He is a member of an acting family which includes his father Lloyd (TV's "Sea Hunt" and many, many movies) and brother Beau ("The Fabulous Baker Boys").

The photo shows parts of two bridges, as seen from a moving train, which should be somewhat helpful.
4. In "True Lies" (1994), what is secret agent Harry Tasker's cover occupation?

Answer: Computer salesman

Arnold Schwarzenegger plays Harry, whose family, including wife Helen (Jamie Lee Curtis), think he is a boring as dirt computer salesman. Little do they know that when they are told he's "at a convention" or "in a sales meeting", he is quite literally out saving the world! Complications are involved when Helen gets tired of having a boring life and starts to look for adventure with someone other than Harry. There are plenty of action scenes and explosions, and a fair number of laughs as well.

The photo shows part of a computer monitor, keyboard, speaker and printer.
5. What "truth" concerned characters played by Uma Thurman, Janeane Garofalo and Ben Chaplin, according to the title of a 1996 movie?

Answer: about cats and dogs

In "The Truth about Cats & Dogs" (1996), Garofalo plays a veterinarian, who also has a call-in radio show about cats and dogs. One of her listeners (Chaplin) expresses a desire to meet her, but she has self-esteem issues. Enter her friend, the model (Thurman), who the good doctor convinces to pretend to be her and meet the young man. The expected amusing and romantic complications follow.

The photo of my own cat and her neighbourhood friend could be helpful in choosing the correct answer.
6. Which 2004 movie is subtitled "A True Underdog Story"?

Answer: Dodgeball

"Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story" stars Vince Vaughn and Ben Stiller as members of rival dodgeball teams. Vince is playing to save his local gym from the clutches of Ben's corporate fitness machine, and the play can be vicious! Who will win? That would be telling...

The other three movies are also from 2004.

The photo is quite an oblique clue, as it is of a garden ornament shaped like a sheep. A male sheep is a ram and Ram trucks used to be made by Dodge, which could lead one to the right answer.
7. In "Where the Truth Lies" (2005), Colin Firth plays one half of a comedy duo that breaks up under unhappy circumstances. Which actor plays the other half of the team?

Answer: Kevin Bacon

The unhappy circumstances include the mysterious death of a young woman, an incident that was covered up at the time. After some introductory scenes showing the somewhat toxic relationship between Vince (Firth) and Lanny (Bacon) the story skips forward to a time when Vince is telling his story to a female journalist played by Alison Lohman.

The truth here is that I expected more from this cast than I got. Of the incorrect choices, Hayman and Chaykin appear in this movie. Irving Bacon (1893-1965) was a character actor with over 500 credits to his name, but this was not one of them.

The photo is a straightforward one: bacon and eggs.
8. What 2006 documentary concerned itself with the threat of climate change?

Answer: An Inconvenient Truth

Written by and starring former American vice president Al Gore, and directed by Davis Guggenheim, "An Inconvenient Truth" is an Oscar winner for Best Documentary, Feature. Gore presents the problem as part of a lecture series, and encourages us to try to do something about it. Gore followed this just over a decade later with "An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power" (2017).

Of the incorrect choices, both "Truth or Consequences" and "To Tell the Truth" are titles that have been used for television game shows, and various other episodes and even films, but not for a 2006 documentary. To my knowledge, "Is That the Truth?" is simply the title of this quiz.

The photo shows a factory in Quebec City, spewing smoke into the otherwise clear air, in an approximation of many of the publicity posters for Gore's movie.
9. Who played the male lead in "The Ugly Truth" (2009), opposite Katherine Heigl?

Answer: Gerard Butler

Butler plays a rather obnoxious television host and Heigl is the producer who initially hates him, but, true to the ways of romantic comedies, eventually comes to have different feelings for him. Butler's credits include other romantic comedies (such as "The Bounty Hunter" (2010)), modern action flicks (such as "Olympus Has Fallen" (2013) and its brethren) and historical fare (for example, "300" (2006)).

Of the other choices, Smoak and Johnson are (or were) baseball players, and actor George Burns passed away aged 100 in 1996.

The photo is of a cigarette butt that someone left resting in a groove in a wall whilst they entered a store, and which is meant to suggest the name Butler. NOTICE: This quiz does not condone either smoking or leaving lit butts lying around in a dangerous manner.
10. The movie "Truth" (2015), starring Cate Blanchett and Robert Redford, is based on a true story.

Answer: True

Apologies, but I could not resist having a true/false question in a quiz about truth!

Redford and Blanchett play newspeople Dan Rather and Mary Mapes, in this tale of the investigation and airing of a story that did not put President George W. Bush in a good light in the run up to his bid for re-election in 2004. Bush, who appears only in archive footage in the movie, fares better, in the end, than either Mapes or Rather.

The photo is of a computer keyboard, showing the letters T and Y in the hope players will be guided to "true" and "yes".
