Kevin Costner played Butch Haynes, an escaped convict who kidnaps a young boy whose house he and his friend enter. Butch is not a bad man, but has gotten where he is because the justice system didn't know what else to do with him. His own tragic childhood prevents him from allowing others to treat children cruelly, and he intervenes on a couple of occasions when he sees mistreatment. Butch and the boy, Philip, form a sort of father-son relationship, sometimes taking turns acting as the father. In pursuit of Butch is Texas Ranger Red Garnett (Clint Eastwood) and criminologist Sally Gerber (Laura Dern).

This poignant 1993 movie was directed by Eastwood, with Costner giving a very moving performance.
