Butch and the boy, Philip, form a sort of father-son relationship, sometimes taking turns acting as the father. In pursuit of Butch is Texas Ranger Red Garnett (Clint Eastwood) and criminologist Sally Gerber (Laura Dern).

This poignant 1993 movie was directed by Eastwood, with Costner giving a very moving performance.
