In a future world dependent upon unreliable technology, Sam Lowry is a clerk in a government agency who, while trying to correct a mistake, sees a girl who looks like the one in his dreams. Two funeral home employees accidentally release a toxic gas from a barrel stored in the basement by the U. S. military. The gas reanimates two corpses, which are then cremated. The smoke mixes with rain, causing bodies from a local cemetery to become indestructible zombies with a hunger for human brains.

Trying to retrieve some of their kind who were left here some 10,000 years ago in rock-like cocoons, aliens rent a house with an indoor pool, which they suffuse with energy to revive their brethren. A trio of nursing home residents use the pool and feel younger, and they and the other residents soon use up the pool's energy.

The aliens decide to leave their friends here in their cocoons, but take some of the nursing home residents back with them.

Mining tycoon Coy LaHood uses water power to mine for gold.
