Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What sort of monster was the creature in "From Hell It Came" (1957)?

Answer: a vengeful walking tree-stump monster

Kimo, the prince of a South Seas island, was falsely accused of his father, the king's, death by conspirators who wanted to seize power. Tano, the witch doctor, Maranka, the pretender to the throne, and Korey, Kimo's wife, all testified against him. He is sentenced to death by having a knife plunged into his heart.

He swears revenge. The village buries him standing upright inside a hollow tree trunk. He sprouts and emerges as a vengeful walking tree-stump monster who kills Tano, Maranka and Korey.

It is obviously him because he still has the sacrificial knife sticking out of his bark.
2. Three of these titles are genuine, bona fide, for-real, professionally-produced and theatrically-released motion pictures from the 1950s. Which one is *NOT*?

Answer: The Atomic Creature

"The Atomic Man" (1955) is a British science-fiction film about an atomic scientist saved from death. "The Atomic Submarine" (1959) is an Arthur Franz vehicle about alien USOs (Unidentified Submerged Objects). "Creature with the Atom Brain" (1955) is a Nazi-zombie movie.

The Atomic Creatures are a rock-and-roll band which describes its music as "An unholy bastard union of '60s surf rock, punk rock, garage, ska, rockabilly, monster movies". "Retribution of the Atomic Creature" is a 2022 novel by D. Anthony Watters.

There does not appear to have been a theatrical motion picture called "The Atomic Creature".
3. How is the monster Curucu killed in "Curucu, Beast of the Amazon" (1956)?

Answer: He is killed by his own people.

There really was no Curucu monster. Instead, a local native leader named Tupanico dressed up as the bird-creature in order to frighten the people into abandoning the plantation and going back to their old ways of jungle village life. In the film's resolution, Tupanico's shrunken head is given to Dr. Romar, indicating that the local people have taken care of their own problem.
4. Who played the handsome newspaper reporter (and suitor to Vicky Edwards) in "Abbott and Costello Meet Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" (1953)?

Answer: Craig Stevens

Newspaper reporter Bruce Adams finds one of the victims of a series of murders in Hyde Park, London, England. He is arrested defending Vicky Edwards who was attacked for leading a rally of suffragettes. He becomes a suitor to Vicky, ward to Dr. Jekyll, who wants her for himself. Adams is played by Craig Stevens, better known for his role as private detective Peter Gunn on television 1958-1961.
5. In the motion picture "Monster on the Campus", how many creatures were turned into prehistoric monsters by the irradiated blood of the coelacanth?

Answer: three: a dog, a dragonfly and a man

A dog is exposed to the coelacanth's blood by lapping up the melted ice in which it was shipped. A dragonfly is exposed by landing on the fish and sucking its blood. The professor is exposed in several ways: he cuts his finger on the fish's teeth and gets its blood in the wound; he smokes his pipe after some of the coelacanth's blood drips into it; and he injects himself with the coelacanth blood.
6. On what source was the motion picture "On the Beach" (1959) based?

Answer: a novel by Nevil Shute

Nevil Shute first wrote the story in "On the Beach" as a four-part series titled "The Last Days on Earth" which was published in the "Sunday Graphic" in London in the spring of 1957. He further developed the story and published it as a novel also in 1957. In addition to the 1959 motion picture, Shute's novel was adapted for radio in 2008 and again for the screen in 2000.
7. Veteran make-up and monster-making artist Jack Pierce applied the make-up to which character in "Giant from the Unknown" (1958)?

Answer: Vargas the Giant

Jack Pearce was the chief of Universal Pictures' make-up department in the 1930s and 1940s. He created Boris Karloff's make-up for both "Frankenstein" (1931) and "The Mummy" (1932). The Frankenstein's monster make-up was copyrighted. He also did Lon Chaney Jr.'s make-up for "The Wolf Man" (1941). Buddy Baer was a 6 foot 6.5 inch heavyweight boxer before he turned to acting in motion pictures. Pearce applied the make-up to Baer to make him into Vargas the Giant, a 500-year-old Conquistador who is resurrected in "Giant from the Unknown".
8. For what is Warren Stevens best known in the world of horror and science fiction movie making?

Answer: acting

Warren Stevens (1919-2012) was an American actor both on television and in motion pictures. He acted extensively on television, for example on "Suspense", "The Twilight Zone", "The Outer Limits", "The Man from U.N.C.L.E.", "The Time Tunnel", "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea", and "Star Trek".

His films included "Gorilla at Large" (1954), "Forbidden Planet" (1956), "On the Threshold of Space" (1956), and "Cyborg 2087" (1966).
9. Where is "Day the World Ended" (1955) set?

Answer: in a box canyon somewhere in the Southwest US

A nuclear war has killed off most of the population of the world. A tiny enclave exists in a box canyon in the American southwest. It is protected from radiation by huge deposits of lead in the surrounding hills. Here retired U.S. Navy Commander Jim Maddison keeps a ranch with all manner of survivalist supplies, for just such an eventuality.
10. In "Battle in Outer Space" (1959), two spaceships from Earth land on the Moon. One returns with the survivors. What happens to the other?

Answer: A member of its own crew destroys it.

Lt. Iwoura, on one of the nine-person crews, is under the mind control of the aliens. He is discovered and restrained. While the crew searches for the alien moon base, Iwoura slips his bonds and destroys one of the ships. When the crew destroys the moon base, it frees Iwoura from alien control before he can blow up the second ship.

As the crew returns to the surviving ship, he remains outside to fight off the few remaining flying saucers, sacrificing himself to make good their escape.
