Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Prehistoric Women" (1950), what is/are the function(s) of the Wise Old Lady in the women's tribe?

Answer: each of these

Actress Janet Scott (b. 1947) plays the Wise Old Lady of the women's tribe of tree-dwellers. In the beginning of the motion picture, the Wise Old Lady tells the women and girls of the tribe the story of how they came to be. They were founded by Tana, mother of Tigri, who rebelled against the men of the tribe and led a party of separatists. Later, when the women capture some of the cavemen, the Wise Old Lady inspects their teeth and slaps their legs to ascertain that they are fit and healthy specimens with which to breed/mate and increase size of the tribe.

At the end of the film, they all return to the camp of the women where the Wise Old Lady performs a marriage ceremony by cutting the wrists and mingling the blood of each of the couples.
2. Three of these titles are genuine, bona fide, for-real, professionally-produced and theatrically-released motion pictures from the 1950s. Which one is *NOT*?

Answer: The Unknown Planet

The Hammer Film motion picture "The Quatermass Xperiment" was known in the United States as "The Creeping Unknown" (1955). "The Land Unknown" (1957) imagines a tropical jungle in Antarctica. The make-up of the monster in "Giant from the Unknown" (1958) was done by Jack Pierce, the same artist who created the make-up for Boris Karloff's "Frankenstein" (1931), "The Mummy" (1932), and Lon Chaney Jr.'s "The Wolf Man" (1941).

"Unknown Planet" is a 2020 on-line survival strategy game by Synthetic Games. "Unknown Planet" is a 1994 juvenile science-fiction novel by Jean Ure. "Planet Unknown" is a board game published by Adam's Apple Games in 2022. "Quest for an Unknown Planet" was a comedy television series (2012-2013). "Unknown Planet" is a song by the Nicolas Simion Group released in 2014. There does not, however, appear to have been a 1950s movie named "Unknown Planet".
3. What kind of monster killed people in "The Daughter of Dr. Jekyll" (1957)?

Answer: a werewolf

It is a curiosity that there was no Doctor Jekyll/Mister Hyde type of monster in "The Daughter of Dr. Jekyll" (1957). Instead, the motion picture was about a woman, the daughter of Doctor Jeykll, who was being convinced that she was a monster by her guardian who was, in fact, a werewolf.
4. Perhaps better known for portraying Sherlock Holmes in 14 motion pictures, who plays the part of Sir Joel Cadman in "The Black Sleep" (1956)?

Answer: Basil Rathbone

Sir Joel Cadman is a surgeon driven mad by his wife's catatonic condition caused by a brain tumor. He is driven to discover a surgical means by which to restore his wife to health. The unfortunate results of his surgical experiments are chained up in the basement of his manor home.
5. What does John Ashley do in "How to Make a Monster" (1958)?

Answer: sings

John Ashley (1934-1997) was on contract to American International as an actor but he had aspirations to become a popular singer. His part in "How to Make a Monster" was a single "rush" for a film in which he played a rock-and-roll singer. His performance style was similar to that of Elvis Presley.

This served as an example of the sorts of films which the new studio management wanted to produce, instead of horror films. Ashley went on to make records but was never a major artist. He did act in films, act on television, and became a movie and television producer, as well.

He appeared in a large number of beach-party movies, alongside Frankie Avalon. His film appearances include "How to Make a Monster" (1958), "Frankenstein's Daughter" (1958), "The Eye Creatures" (1965), "Brides of Blood" (1968), "The Mad Doctor of Blood Island" (1968), "Beast of Blood" (1970), "The Twilight People" (1972), "Beyond Atlantis" (1973, and "Black Mamba" (1974).
6. In what country was "The Day the Sky Exploded" (1958) made?

Answer: Italy

"The Day the Sky Exploded" was a Franco-Italian film made in Italy as "La morte viene dallo spazio" (which means "Death Comes From Space"). Science fiction movies were made regularly in both the US and UK but "The Day the Sky Exploded" was the first feature-length science fiction genre motion picture made in Italy.
7. How was the monster in "The Giant Claw (1957) created by the filmmakers?

Answer: a discount no-frills puppet

Producer Sam Katzman originally intended to hire expert Ray Harryhausen to create the beaky buzzard using stop-motion cinematography. That process is both time consuming and expensive. When his budget prevented such an ambitious plan, Katzman cut a deep-discount deal with a low-budget special effects company in Mexico City.

The result was a marionette which was not scary but funny. Well-known movie critic Leonard Maltin said of the film "Big Bird is laughable".
8. For what is Constance Dowling best known in the world of horror and science fiction movie making?

Answer: acting

Before Constance Dowling (1920-1969) became a film actress, she was an American model. Because she lived in Italy from 1947 until 1950, her first films were made there. She returned to Hollywood and made several pictures in the US. In "Gog" she made her last screen appearance, then marrying the producer and writer, Ivan Tors, in 1955.
9. What is the setting of "A Bucket of Blood" (1959)?

Answer: Venice Beach, Southern California

"A Bucket of Blood" is set in and around the Yellow Door café in Venice, California. The time is the 1950s in the beatnik culture. The Beat milieu of the late 1950s is apparent in the dress, the language, the poetry and the music in the film.
10. At the end of "The Giant Gila Monster" (1959), young Chase Winstead sacrifices his hand-built hot rod to save the town from the creature. What kind of car is it?

Answer: a 1932 Model B Ford

Hot rods are cars of previous generations which are reworked to reduce weight and increase power. Chase worked in a garage as an auto mechanic and worked on his roadster on his own time. It was a '32 B Ford with a small-block Chevrolet engine bored out to 302 cubic inches displacement.

The car used in the film belonged to John Mulkey and won its class in the 1958 National Hot Rod Association finals.
