Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Horror of Dracula" (1958), how does Dr. Van Helsing know that Count Dracula has already taken possession of Mina Holmwood?

Answer: A cross on a necklace burns her.

Doctor Van Helsing and Arthur Holmwood are trying to track down Dracula's coffin. Arthur attempts to give Mina a gold cross to wear to protect her from the vampire but, when it touches her skin, it burns her. This convinces Dr. Van Helsing that she is becoming a vampire under Dracula's influence.

In "Fright Night" (1985), Ed, a newly turned vampire, is burnt on the forehead when he is touched with a cross. In the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" series (1997-2003), Buffy frequently burned the undead by touching them with a cross.

In 2010, Dark Horse Comics released a "Supernatural Defense Kit" in conjunction with a "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" comic. The kit included a bottle of "holy water" with silvery flakes in it, a Claddagh ring and a gold-coloured plastic cross for touching the undead.
2. Three of these titles are genuine, bona fide, for-real, professionally-produced and theatrically-released motion pictures from the 1950s. Which one is *NOT*?

Answer: At War with the Dinosaurs

"Battle Beyond the Sun" (1959) was shot in Russian by Mikhail Karyukov and Aleksandr Kozyr. It pits two future nations against one another in a race to land an expedition on Mars. "Battle in Outer Space" (1959) was shot in Japanese by director Ishirô Honda (the guy who directed all the "Godzilla" movies). It is about the nations of the Earth coming together to repel an invasion by space munchkins. "Conquest of Space" (1955) is an American science-fiction film about a voyage to Mars, the cast of which includes William Hopper (who played Paul Drake on "Perry Mason" on television) and Ross Martin (who played Artemus Gordon on television's "The Wild Wild West".

"At War with the Dinosaurs" is a documentary made in 2020 by John Michael Parkan to demonstrate the need to develop hydrogen as a clean energy source in the face of global warming caused by fossil fuels. There does not appear to have been a fictional feature film made in the 1950s called "At War with the Dinosaurs".
3. What kills the Visitor in "Stranger From Venus" (1954)?

Answer: staying too long in Earth's atmosphere

In order to survive on Earth, the Visitor in "Stranger from Venus" was conditioned to breathe the air and withstand the atmospheric pressure. This conditioning was of limited duration, however, and he explains to Doctor Meinard that if he does not depart in his own ship or is not rescued by the mother ship, he will die... which he does.
4. Who played Colonel Thomas O'Bannion in "The Angry Red Planet" (1959)?

Answer: Gerald Mohr

Gerald Mohr (1914-1968) was often compared to Humphrey Bogart for his tough-guy good looks. He played leading men on radio, in movies and on television. Most of his roles were in crime dramas or westerns but he did appear in "The Monster and the Girl" (1941), "The Night the World Exploded" (1957), and "Terror in the Haunted House" (1958).

In "The Angry Red Planet" (1959) he played Colonel Thomas O'Bannion, Air Force pilot and commander of a mission to Mars, which was also a romantic lead opposite the lovely Nora Hayden.
5. In the credits for "Robot Monster" (1953), N.A. Fisher Chemical Products, Inc. is thanked for the use of their Billion Bubble Machine. For what was it used in the movie?

Answer: It was part of Ro-Man's communication device.

Ro-Man, forbidden to engage in independent thought, was required to check-in often with his superior, the Great Guidance. At the mouth of Ro-Man's cave, there was a sort of television set used for this purpose. When the television was being used, it generated soap bubbles, like a child's bubble toy.

The device which produced these saponaceous orbs was apparently the creation of N.A. Fisher Chemical Products, Inc.
6. Was "Gog" (1954) a sequel, a prequel, a stand-alone motion picture, or what?

Answer: the third in a series

Ivan Tors struck upon a clever mechanism whereby he could produce a series of science-based science-fiction films connected by the "Office of Scientific Investigation" (OSI). Something would go wrong at a scientific facility and the OSI would send someone to solve the mystery and save the day. "Gog" is the third and last of this series, following "The Magnetic Monster" (1953) and "Riders to the Stars" (1954).

It is not, however, a sequel.
7. The crisis in "When Worlds Collide" (1951) is caused by a rogue star and its single satellite on course to crash into the Earth. What is the name of the star and what is the name of the planet (to which Earth's survivors may escape)?

Answer: Bellus / Zyra

In "When Worlds Collide", the star Bellus has a single planet, called Zyra, in orbit around it. The discovery that this pair is on a collision course with the Earth prompts a plan to evacuate a small number of Earthlings to Zyra as Bellus destroys the Earth. Ophecius and Cleolanta are from "Crash of Moons" (1954), a "Rocky Jones, Space Ranger" television serial edited into a feature film. 36 Ophiuchi B and Giedi Prime appear in "Dune" by Frank Herbert (1965). Proxima Centauri and Proxima b figure in the television series "The Ark" which began on the Syfy Network on 1 February 2023.
8. For what is Ava Gardner best known in the world of horror and science fiction movie making?

Answer: acting

Ava Gardner (1922-1990) was a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer actress for 20 years. The American Film Institute named her to their list of best actresses in classic American cinema. She did not do a great deal of work in science fiction or horror films but did appear in "Ghosts on the Loose" (1943), "On the Beach" (1959), "Tam-Lin" (1970), and "The Sentinel" (1977).
9. Where is the motion picture "King Dinosaur" (1955) set?

Answer: the planet Nova

Altair IV is the setting of "Forbidden Planet" (1956). The planet Zyra is the new planet to which humanity wishes to escape in "When Worlds Collide" (1951). The planet Mongo is on a collision course with Earth in the "Flash Gordon" serial (1936). "King Dinosaur" is set on the planet Nova to which an expedition is sent in 1960 to determine its suitability for colonization by Earthlings.
10. In "The She-Creature", when Lt. Ed James examines the beach house in which the Jeffersons were murdered, he finds seaweed on the floor. What is its significance?

Answer: The killer came from the sea.

Dr. Lombardi was the first person to enter the Jeffersons' beach house after their death. Dorothy and Ted are next; they call the police. Lt. James examines the crime scene and notices the seaweed on the floor. Dr. Lombardi had just predicted that "a creature from out of the pond is coming to live among us". Lombardi regresses Andrea back to her former life as Elizabeth Anne Weatherby in 1618.

It is through Elizabeth that he is able to summon the She-Monster from the sea.
