Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Casper (1995)
Answer: Bill Pullman
In this combination of live action actors and animated ghost characters, Christina Ricci plays Kat, the daughter of afterlife therapist Dr. James Harvey, played by Bill Pullman, who is hired by heiress Carrigan Crittenden (Cathy Moriarty) to exorcise the ghosts from the mansion her late father left to her. Kat eventually encounters Casper, "the friendliest ghost you know", who is the ghost of a young boy. Casper's ghostly uncles though are much less friendly and in fact are bent on doing the exorcising and driving the humans from their house.
The film's climax is a Halloween party at the mansion, where Casper tries to connect with Kat.
2. Donnie Darko (2001)
Answer: Jake Gyllenhaal
Jake Gyllenhaal plays the titular character of Donnie Darko, a teenager in 1988 who experiences strange visions, including a storm and a vortex above his house, a vision of the death of his romantic interest Gretchen (Jena Malone), but most often a vision of a character named Frank in a rabbit costume. One of Frank's warnings is a specific amount of time left before the end of the world. On Halloween, Donnie and his sister Elizabeth (played by real life sister Maggie Gyllenhaal) host a Halloween costume party to celebrate her acceptance into Harvard University.
3. Halloween (1978)
Answer: Jamie Lee Curtis
The granddaddy Halloween film of them all, "Halloween" is the film that put director John Carpenter on the horror film map. This classic took the film-going season by storm. I remember seeing it right when it came out and it was easy to see that the film was special. Jamie Lee Curtis plays Laurie Strode, a babysitter who is terrorized by Michael Myers, an unkillable "boogeyman", as Donald Pleasance's Dr. Loomis called him.
This was Ms. Curtis's film debut, as she'd only done TV episodes here and there before. Ms. Curtis played Laurie Strode in seven "Halloween" movies in total.
4. Halloweentown (1998)
Answer: Debbie Reynolds
This Disney Channel Original Movie takes place on All Hallow's Eve, the one day when travel between the mortal world and Halloweentown is possible. Marnie Piper is a young girl with an overprotective mother and when Halloween approaches, Marnie's mother invokes strict rules preventing her children from partaking in Halloween celebrations.
But then Marnie's grandmother Aggie (Debbie Reynolds) shows up, and as it turns out she is a witch who embraces the magical world, unlike her daughter Gwen who rejects it. Marnie learns that she is from witch pedigree and that Aggie wishes to teach Marnie about witchcraft before she turns 13, because if Marnie doesn't receive training by age 13, she will lose her powers.
5. Hocus Pocus (1993)
Answer: Bette Midler
Three hundred years after the Sanderson sisters, Winifred, Sarah, and Mary, were executed for witchcraft on Halloween night 1693 in Salem, Massachusetts, they come back to life in modern day Salem when a boy named Max unknowingly breaks the curse. Led by Winifred (Bette Midler), the witches attempt to drain Max's sister Dani of her life force. Bette Midler with prosthetic buck teeth is the eldest of the sisters, and the most wily and powerful witch in the family.
6. The House of 1000 Corpses (2003)
Answer: Karen Black
It's Halloween 1977 and four friends - Bill, Jerry, Mary, and Denise - are on a road trip visiting unusual roadside attraction around the country. They encounter Captain Spaulding's Museum of Monsters and Madmen and cross paths with a weird hitchhiker named Baby.
Then they meet Baby's family whose matriarch, Mother Firefly, is played by Karen Black. Mother Firefly serves up dinner and the family puts on a Halloween show for the guests. Mayhem ensues.
7. Monster House (2006)
Answer: Kathleen Turner
Taking place during Halloween, this is an animated horror-comedy in which three teenagers discover that their neighbor's house is a scary monster and its identity is Constance "The Giantess" Nebbercracker (voiced by Kathleen Turner). She is the dead wife of the current homeowner, Horace Nebbercracker, who all these years had a reputation of being a grumpy menacing man chasing children away from the house.
But it was actually just his way of protecting children from Constance's vengeful spirit possessing their house. Why vengeful? She was made fun of by kids for her obesity when she was alive.
8. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
Answer: Danny Elfman
Danny Elfman didn't just write the ten songs in this animated Halloween musical film, he also provided the singing voice of the lead character, Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town. Chris Sarandon was the speaking voice. Jack discovers Christmas Town while exploring portals in a group of trees that lead to other worlds.
When he tries to introduce the concepts of Christmas to Halloween Town the monstrous citizens fail to grasp it. Elfman was originally supposed to play the spoken dialogue as well, but he was replaced when director Henry Selick thought the quality didn't measure up to his singing.
9. Sleepy Hollow (1999)
Answer: Johnny Depp
Based on Washington Irving's story, this Tim Burton film stars Johnny Depp as the New York police Inspector Ichabod Crane, who is sent upstate to Sleepy Hollow in 1799 to investigate a series of murders. The townfolk believe the decapitations were perpetrated by the Headless Horseman, a demonic spirit said to be the ghost of a Hessian mercenary killed in the Revolutionary War. Depp's Inspector pooh-poohs such notions and investigates using his new world science-based criminology.
But he soon finds the supernatural world holds more currency than he thought.
10. Trick 'r Treat (2007)
Answer: Anna Paquin
This is an anthology film consisting of five shorter films in all, and all taking place on Halloween. Anna Pacquin plays Laurie (an homage to Jamie Lee Curtis in "Halloween"?) in the middle story called "Surprise Party". Laurie is a shy 22-year-old who goes to a Halloween festival dressed as Little Red Riding Hood while her older sister and friends all wear princess costumes. Laurie stays at the festival while the other girls go to a bonfire in the woods.
When Laurie goes to catch up with them, she is attacked by a man in a vampire costume who we discover is the school principal from the previous vignette. Laurie, it turns out though, is unharmed and brings the injured principal to the bonfire, where all the girls transform into werewolves.
