Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Why does the newly appointed Bishop Brougham, played by David Niven, pray for guidance?

Answer: He is dejected by his efforts to raise money for a cathedral.

Bishop Brougham has put together a committee to oversee the building of a cathedral. He is stymied by the lack of progress raising the needed funds. In desperation he prays and he is visited by an angel.

David Niven suffered a personal tragedy just before filming began. His young wife fell down the stairs at the home of Tyrone Power during a party and died as a result of her injuries. She was just 28 years old and left David Niven with two young children.
2. In answer to the bishop's prayer, an angel named Dudley appears. Why does Dudley begin to "rub the bishop the wrong way"?

Answer: The bishop becomes jealous of Dudley's relationship with his wife and daughter.

The bishop is so consumed with the building of the cathedral he doesn't take time to interact with his wife, Julia, or his daughter, Debbie. Dudley steps in to that role and his developing relationship with Julia really starts to annoy the bishop. In fact, the bishop becomes jealous and resentful of Dudley.

David Niven was originally cast as the angel, but when Grant was brought on to the project, he didn't like the dialogue as written in the script for the bishop. He opted for the part of the angel, and because he was the bigger star, the roles were changed.
3. What does Matilda give Dudley to wear as he heads out in to the cold?

Answer: A scarf

Matilda is played by Elsa Lanchester who develops a crush on Dudley. The scarf she gives Dudley to wear belongs to the bishop, who has never worn it. When the bishop sees the scarf around Dudley's neck, he looks annoyed.

Elsa Lanchester gained prominence in the film "The Bride of Frankenstein" when cast as the monster's female companion. She was married to Charles Laughton.
4. Dudley and Professor Wutheridge are always arguing about where they had first met. What was the name of the city?

Answer: Vienna

Played by Monty Woolley, the professor had been trying for years to write a history of the Roman Empire. He considered himself to be a failure until Dudley inspires him by telling him the history of an old Roman coin. The professor couldn't remember from where he knew Dudley because he didn't know Dudley was an angel. In reality, Dudley and the professor had never met.
5. Who plays the bishop's wife, Julia?

Answer: Loretta Young

While Cary Grant and Loretta Young had a lot of on-screen chemistry, they didn't get along off the set. In fact, they couldn't stand each other. Cary Grant was very particular on the set which seemed to make Loretta Young anxious and nervous.
6. How does Dudley help Debbie, the bishop and Julia's daughter?

Answer: He encourages her to take part in a snowball fight.

The bishop is so preoccupied with raising money for the cathedral, he neglects Debbie and Julia.

Dudley fills that void. He encourages Debbie to join a group of boys who are having a snowball fight, even though she says she can't throw. Dudley helps her guide a snowball right into the face of one of the captains. After that she is welcomed to join. Throughout the movie, Dudley becomes more attracted to Julia, and Debbie is absolutely devoted to him. During the filming David Niven, perhaps driven by grief on losing his wife, wanted nothing to do with the children and asked they be kept away from him. Cary Grant, on the other hand, was very welcoming to the kids.
7. Dudley and Julia visit a choir rehearsal at St. Timothy's and Dudley conducts the choir. What song do the boys sing?

Answer: O Sing To God

During this scene only one boy is present. Reverend Miller tells Dudley that it is difficult to compete with basketball. Dudley uses his powers to bring the boys in for the rehearsal who sing beautifully. Julia remarks to Reverend Miller that she is sorry the bishop had to miss the rehearsal. The song is performed by The Mitchell Boy Choir, who performed in over 100 films.
8. The bishop goes to see Mrs. Hamilton, who has promised a large donation for the cathedral. What happens when he tries to leave?

Answer: He gets stuck in his chair.

Mrs. Hamilton's butler explains that the chair had been newly varnished, yet it is Dudley who has caused the bishop's predicament. The scene is very funny as David Niven has to move with the chair across the room. The butler tries to pull the chair from him, but to no avail. The bishop has to call Matilda and have her send him a new pair of trousers. Gladys Cooper plays Agnes Hamilton.
9. Dudley and Julia take a cab ride after they leave the choir rehearsal. They tell the driver, Sylvester, to take them through the park. What do they stop and do there?

Answer: All three go ice skating.

On the way to the park, Sylvester nearly has a head on collision with a truck, but Dudley saves the day. Dudley helps Julia become an excellent skater, and Sylvester also puts on skates and joins them on the ice. When Dudley asks how much he owes for the cab fare, Sylvester replies, "My pockets are bulging with coins of self-satisfaction, because you and the little lady have restored my faith in human nature." Dudley is fulfilling his role by helping everyone he meets to restore faith in each other.

Cary Grant was an accomplished skater and athlete. He did all of his own skating in the scene with the exception of the difficult moves.
10. What does Mrs. Hamilton decide to do with her money?

Answer: She plans to give it to the needy.

Dudley plays a song on a harp. The song was written by the only man she ever loved and was dedicated to her. After she tells Dudley her life story, she has a life changing experience and wants the bishop to help her use her money in different charities to help the poor.
