Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Crime Story (1993)

Answer: A Hong Kong cop investigates the kidnapping of a wealthy Chinese businessman

Loosely based on the real-life kidnapping of businessman Teddy Wang, "Crime Story" was directed by Kirk Wong. Jackie plays an emotionally stressed cop trying to solve the case despite the fact that one of his fellow cops working with the kidnappers. Jackie has said he was unsure about playing such a serious role, but was happy with how it turned out.

The film was very well received and was nominated for 6 Hong Kong Film Awards, including Best Picture.
2. City Hunter (1993)

Answer: A womanizing private investigator dresses like Chun-Li from "Street Fighter" and battles terrorists on a cruise ship

Based on the popular "City Hunter" manga by Tsukasa Hojo, this film has Jackie's character, Ryo Saeba, searching for a missing heiress. He ends up foiling a hostage crisis on a cruise ship and battling British kickboxing champion Gary Daniels while dressed as various "Street Fighter" characters.

It was made due to Jackie's popularity in Japan. Jackie and director Wong Jing did not get along during filming, so Wong Jing went on to make a film in 1995 called "High Risk", which spoofed Jackie in a very negative manner. "City Hunter" was a big hit though, earning $30 million at the Hong Kong box office.
3. Project A (1983)

Answer: A marine, a policeman, and a criminal team up to battle pirates in 19th century Hong Kong

With "Project A", Jackie moved out of the classic Chinese period into more modern settings for his films. Jackie directed and bought in his two Peking Opera School "brothers", Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao to co-star. The film is about the Hong Kong Marine Police's efforts to stop pirates from raiding British ships along the coast. To stop the pirates, Dragon Ma (Jackie) of the marines joins forces with Inspector Hong (Yuen Biao) of the mainland police and Fei (Sammo), a smuggler whose schemes are being disrupted by the pirates.

This film features one of Jackie's most famous stunts, a fall from a 60 foot high clock tower. "Project A" was a massive hit all over east Asia, including South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan, leading to a sequel four years later.
4. The Protector (1985)

Answer: Two New York City police officers track a drug smuggling ring to Hong Kong

Directed by James Glickenhaus and co-starring Danny Aiello, "The Protector" was an attempt to break Jackie into the US film market by making him a tough, Dirty Harry type action hero. Jackie and Aiello play NY cops investigating a war between competing drug rings in New York and Hong Kong.

When the New York gang leader's daughter is kidnapped by the other gang, the two cops are sent to Hong Kong to rescue her and smash the drug ring. Jackie hated the film and once filming was over, went back and reshot new scenes for the Hong Kong version to try and improve it.

The film was a massive failure in the US and only marginally successful in Hong Kong.
5. Armour of God (1986)

Answer: The Asian Hawk, an Indiana Jones-type adventurer, searches for pieces of an ancient treasure

"Armour of God" sees Jackie team up with popular singer Alan Tam to battle an evil cult for the pieces of a legendary armour, the titular Armour of God. It was a massive film for Jackie that was filmed in multiple countries across Europe. This was the film where Jackie almost died when he fell from a tree and cracked his skull on a rock. Emergency surgery saved Jackie's life, but left him with a permanent hole in his skull. Jackie returned to finish the film, which became Hong Kong's highest ever grossing film at the time.

A sequel, "Armour of God II: Operation Condor", was made in 1991.
6. The Fearless Hyena (1979)

Answer: A young student learns "Emotional Kung-Fu" to battle the man who killed his grandfather

"The Fearless Hyena", a period kung-fu comedy, featured Jackie as Lung, a young kung-fu fighter whose grandfather trained him, but told him to keep it a secret and not show off. Lung doesn't listen and attracts the attention of an evil kung-fu master, who kills his grandfather. Lung seeks out a reclusive master to learn a new style and avenge his grandfather. This film was Jackie's directorial debut and his last film working for Lo Wei, the producer that gave him his big break in movies. Jackie had signed a new contract with Golden Harvest studios, but Lo Wei tried to use his triad connections to force Jackie to stay with him. Eventually, a deal was worked out and Jackie left, but Lo Wei used behind-the scenes footage of Jackie, along with lookalike stunt doubles, to make a sequel, "Fearless Hyena II", without Jackie's knowledge.

Despite all the behind the scenes turmoil, "The Fearless Hyena" was a big success, earning $5 million at the Hong Kong box office.
7. New Fist of Fury (1976)

Answer: A young man battles evil Japanese fighters in the style of Bruce Lee

Jackie was picked out of near-obscurity to be the star of "New Fist of Fury", the direct sequel to "Fist of Fury", which starred the late Bruce Lee. In it, Jackie plays a young thief in Taiwan who joins forces with the surviving characters from the first film to fight their Japanese oppressors. Jackie had actually worked as a stuntman on the original film and had known Bruce Lee. Directed by the first film's director, Lo Wei, several cast members from the original were bought back for the sequel and Jackie was heavily promoted as "the new Bruce Lee", but the film bombed at the box office.
8. The Foreigner (2017)

Answer: A grieving father takes on the IRA to get revenge for his daughter

Directed by Martin Campbell, "The Foreigner" stars Jackie as a Vietnamese man whose daughter is killed in a suspected IRA bombing. He goes looking for revenge, coming up against Pierce Brosnan as a politician with suspected IRA ties. "The Foreigner" sees Jackie playing a serious role with very little of his trademark martial arts action.

It was a surprise hit at the worldwide box office, pulling in $145 million dollars worldwide and very good critical reviews.
9. Drunken Master (1978)

Answer: Legendary Chinese hero Wong Fei-Hung learns kung-fu from a slovenly, alcoholic teacher

"Drunken Master", also known as "Drunken Monkey in the Tiger's Eye", is one of Jackie's most famous films. Directed by Yuen Woo-Ping, it was one of the first films to blend comedy with martial arts and was hugely influential on other martial arts filmmakers. Jackie plays Wong Fei-Hung, a real-life legendary martial artist and healer.

However, Jackie plays him as a young, lazy, irresponsible troublemaker who has to learn drunken kung-fu from a notorious drunken master called Beggar So. This portrayal of the respected Wong Fei-Hung really shocked audiences at the time. Jackie would star in the official sequel, "Drunken Master II" (or "The Legend of Drunken Master") in 1994, though there were several other spinoffs and imitations as well.
10. Rush Hour (1998)

Answer: A Hong Kong cop and an LA cop reluctantly team up to find a kidnapped girl

"Rush Hour", directed by Brett Ratner, teamed Jackie up with American comic actor Chris Tucker in a buddy action film. They play two cops from different countries forced to work together to find the Chinese Consul's kidnapped daughter, becoming friends along the way.

It was Jackie's first successful American starring role, earning $140 million in the US and $244 million worldwide. Two very profitable sequels followed in 2001 and 2007.
11. The Cannonball Run (1981)

Answer: Teams compete in an outlaw, cross-country car race across the US

Directed by Hal Needham and based on a real outlaw race held in 1979, "The Cannonball Run" was one of 1981's most successful films at the box office. It featured an all-star cast, including Burt Reynolds, Roger Moore, Farrah Fawcett, Dom DeLuise, Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin, and Terry Bradshaw as some of the other racers.

This was Jackie's second American film. He was teamed up with Hong Kong comedian Michael Hui as two Japanese(!) racers who drive a gadget-filled Subaru. Jackie even has a fight scene with a biker gang led by Peter Fonda.

A sequel, "Cannonball Run II", would be made in 1984, with Jackie returning, this time teamed up with Richard Kiel, for some reason.
12. Gorgeous (1999)

Answer: A lonely millionaire falls in love with a young Taiwanese girl

Directed by Vincent Kok, "Gorgeous" was a real change of pace for Jackie. It was originally conceived as a straight romantic film with Jackie as a producer, but he eventually decided to star in it too. His love interest is played by popular Taiwanese actress Shu Qi.

She plays a girl who discovers a romantic message in a bottle on the beach in Taiwan. Touched, she tracks down the writer in Hong Kong, only to discover that he's gay. However, she meets a wealthy, but sad businessman played by Jackie and they fall for each other.

A couple of action scenes were added, but the main focus of the film is the love story. Despite the lack of fighting, Jackie's fans enjoyed it anyway, as it earned $40 million at the Hong Kong box office.
13. Rumble in the Bronx (1995)

Answer: A Hong Kong cop defends a NYC supermarket from a violent street gang

"Rumble in the Bronx", directed by Stanley Tong, was released in Hong Kong in January 1995 and became one of the biggest box office hits there, ever, earning $56 million at the box office. It was then released theatrically in America in 1996, earning $76 million US and becoming Jackie's first true crossover hit.

He plays a Hong Kong cop who comes to New York for his uncle's wedding and to help him sell his supermarket. Jackie ends up staying to help protect the new owner (played by the late Cantopop singer Anita Mui) from a street gang looking to wreck the supermarket.

The US version was edited by 16 minutes from the Hong Kong version, so most fans prefer the original. Interestingly, though set in the Bronx, the whole film was shot in Vancouver.
14. Rob-B-Hood (2006)

Answer: Three bumbling burglars kidnap a baby and go on the run from the cops and the triads

Directed by Benny Chan, this film was an attempt by Jackie to switch up his "nice guy" image and play a crook, though he's still pretty likable. He plays the leader of a trio of burglars paid to kidnap a baby for a triad boss. Things go wrong when they try to jack up their fee, so they end up being chased by both the triads and the police. Jackie co-wrote the screenplay and got popular actors Louis Koo and Michael Hui to co-star as his fellow burglars, along with his old opera school classmate, Yuen Biao, as the policeman in charge of the case.

The film was well received and earned $20 million at the worldwide box office.
15. The Forbidden Kingdom (2008)

Answer: A kid from Boston is magically transported to ancient China and becomes a hero

Directed by Rob Minkoff, "The Forbidden Kingdom" was the first on-screen team-up of Jackie Chan and Jet Li. Jackie plays a drunken kung-fu master and Jet plays the Monkey King, Sun Wukong. They team with Michael Angarano's Jason, a teenager accidentally sent from modern-day Boston, to battle an evil warlord and save China.

The film is very loosely based on the famous 16th century novel, "Journey to the West". It earned $127 million worldwide at the box office and received good reviews.
