Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. My BIG movie quiz has to start with the movie "Big" (1988). It, of course, starred Tom Hanks in the fantastic lead role. Which celebrity, better known for his/her role in "Laverne & Shirley", directed the movie?

Answer: Penny Marshall

Penny Marshall played the role of Laverne, receiving three Golden Globe nominations for her work. Her directorial debut was with "Jumpin' Jack Flash" (1986). "Big" was the first movie directed by a woman to gross over $100 million in box office earning. She also directed "Awakenings" (1990), which was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture, and several subsequent films.
Cindy Williams played the role of Shirley and has a lengthy resume acting in movies and TV as well as appearing on Broadway.
Michael McKean, who played Lenny in "Laverne & Shirley", has also had an extensive career in movies, TV and the stage. He earned several awards for his portrayal of lead character Jimmy McGill's older brother Chuck in "Better Call Saul".
Ron Howard of course has had an outstanding career as a director but he just made some brief appearances in "Laverne & Shirley" reprising the role of Richie Cunningham from "Happy Days".
2. "The Big Lebowski" (1998) by the Coen Brothers, featuring Jeff Bridges' portrayal of The Dude, has become a cult classic. Many people know that The Dude's favorite drink is the White Russian. But instead, what popular rock band was being played in a taxi that The Dude was riding in and he said he hated, resulting in a confrontation?

Answer: The Eagles

The Dude was having a rough night and taking a cab whose driver was listening to a radio station that was playing the Eagles. The Dude complained but the taxi driver wasn't having any of it and threw him out of the cab. Despite their popularity (five Billboard number-one singles and six number-one albums), the Eagles have come under some some intense criticism. With the passing of Glenn Frey, Gersh Kuntzman of "The New York Daily News" wrote, "No disrespect to Glenn Frey but the Eagles were, quite simply, the worst rock and roll band." The cult status of the movie and the character The Dude has gone to the extent of inspiring the founding of the religion of Dudeism, aka The Church of the Latter-Day Dude, in 2005.

It now has over 600,000 Dudeist priests as followers per their web site.

In 2014, the film was selected to be in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress. Hoffman is listed at 5 ft. 5 and 1/2 in. (166 cm.), DeVito 4 ft. 10 in. (147 cm.), Pacino 5 ft. 6 in. (167 cm.) and Fox 5 ft. 4 in. (163 cm.).
