Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. __ Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

Based on the novel of the same name by Ken Kesey, "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" was set in a mental asylum. New patient, Randle Patrick McMurphy, (played by Jack Nicholson) constantly finds himself butting heads with Nurse Ratched (played by Louise Fletcher) who runs the institution.

The movie was critically acclaimed and became only the second film to win all five major Oscars (Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, and Best Screenplay). The first film to achieve this distinction was "It Happened One Night", four decades earlier.
2. ___ Weddings and a Funeral

This British film was the first of many collaborations between screenwriter Richard Curtis and actor Hugh Grant. As expected, based on the title of "Four Weddings and a Funeral", the movie follows the lives of Charles (Grant) and his friends as they meet potential love interests over multiple social occasions.

The film was a sleeper hit, earning Oscar nominations for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay.
3. ___ Years in Tibet

"Seven Years in Tibet" is a biographical film, set partly during World War II. The plot is based on the time spent in Tibet by Austrian mountaineer Heinrich Harrer, as described in his memoir of the same name. Apart from being a mountaineer, Harrer was also a sergeant in the Schutzstaffel, a paramilitary organization in Nazi Germany. Harrer was attempting to scale the Himalayas when his quest was interrupted by the outbreak of war. Taken as prisoner-of-war in British India, he escaped and sought refuge in the then independent Tibet. Living with the Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of the Tibetans, Harrer gained a new perspective on life.
4. ___ Things I Hate About You

"10 Things I Hate About You" is an adaptation of the Shakespearean play "The Taming of the Shrew". Instead of the Renaissance era Padua, the movie is set in the 1990s, at an American high school named Padua, in the Seattle area. The film stars Julia Stiles, Heath Ledger, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Larisa Oleynik. Cameron (Gordon-Levitt) falls for Bianca (Oleynik) but can't date her as her father has strict rules for his daughter. To get around this, he bribes another student Patrick (Ledger) to woo Bianca's older sister, Kat (Stiles).
5. ___ Angry Men

Directed by Sidney Lumet, "12 Angry Men" is a legal drama. The title refers to the jury of 12 who have to decide on a case where a teenager has been charged with murder. Henry Fonda not only starred in the movie, but also co-produced it. The film is often regarded as a case study in avoiding herd mentality, with Juror #8, played by Fonda, initially being the only one to hold out against a guilty verdict.
6. ___ Candles

"Sixteen Candles" is a teenage comedy. Samantha Baker (played by Molly Ringwald) was looking forward to her sixteenth birthday and hoping it ushered in a more exciting phase of her life. What she least expected was that her family would forget her birthday altogether! Her older sister was set to get married the next day and in all the wedding related festivities, Sam's birthday was forgotten.
7. ___ Dresses

"27 Dresses" is a rom-com starring Katherine Heigl and James Marsden as the lead couple. The 27 dresses in the title refer to the number of times Jane (played by Heigl) had been a bridesmaid at different weddings. Unlucky in love, she hadn't found her soulmate, till she met a cynical reporter in classic rom-com fashion.
8. ___ First Dates

"50 First Dates" starred Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore in lead roles. Set in Hawaii, the film follows commitment phobic Henry Roth, who finally falls for a woman when he meets Lucy Whitmore. Unfortunately for him, Lucy suffers from short term memory loss.

After an accident, her mind is unable to retain new memories. Each day she wakes up with memories only up to the day of the accident. Thus follows Henry's attempts to win her affections anew each day.
9. Gone in ___ Seconds

"Gone in 60 Seconds" was released in 2000 and starred Nicholas Cage and Angelina Jolie. When Kip Raines (played by Giovanni Ribisi), a car thief, is kidnapped for unwittingly leading the cops to his gang's hideout, his older brother, Memphis Raines (Cage), a former car thief himself, has to step in to help him out. Memphis is forced to steal 50 luxury cars in one night to save his brother.
10. ___ A Space Odyssey

Directed by Stanley Kubrick, "2001: A Space Odyssey" was inspired by a short story called "The Sentinel", written by Arthur C. Clarke. Clarke and Kubrick co-wrote the screenplay for the film. The story follows the discovery of an unusual artefact beneath the lunar surface.

A spacecraft is then sent to Jupiter to investigate the origins of said object. The film was acclaimed for its special effects, realistic depiction of space flight, and unconventional narrative technique.
